I feel suitably intimidated

So far I mostly only carried an Advanced Discovery scanner with me in the human space bubble while trading and stuff. I've only been out 200ly once for a CG. Now after reaching trade Elite and irritated by the buggy 1.3 release I set out for the first real trip. Currently about 500ly out in the Coalsack area with the general direction of crossing the beta quadrant towards gamma. When I pull up the map, there's nothing but unknown space. Turning up political view, there's a tiny colorful ball far away. I'm really impressed. Objectively there are no worries. My Asp is a joy and operates smoothly. Nearly no fuel consumption at all going the scenic route and instantly full tank though the A6 scoop whenever I want. Two terraformable waterworlds so far. Will probably stay out for two weeks, then deliver all the data to the current CG.

It's an odd sensation isn't it? You get used to the busy little bubble of inhabited space and think it's huge and complex. Then you step outside and suddenly the Galaxy really shows how mind-bogglingly huge it really is.

Wait til you start measuring the distance in 10s of KLY... that feeling is more than a little weird.

Wait, why are you intimidated? Afraid of the return trip?
When you do your first planned exploration trip, it's like doing a solo trip around the world's oceans for the first time. You know it's dangerous and things, bad unexpected things, can happen.
Yeah, it's intimidating.
Exciting too!

Sam: If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been.
Frodo: Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

at 500 it is intimidation at size, at 1000 it gets pretty tight and you start feeling a panicky pull back to the bubble. Once you've snapped that tether you start counting time back to the bubble in hours, then days, then weeks.
The road goes ever on.

Don't bust the glass.
Don't taunt the Neutron Stars they have a bad attitude.
Always know where your next fuel stop is.
Always plot THROUGH unscoopable systems.
Bring back pictures.

Pay attention to how quickly the petty self imposed political problems of The Bubble become utterly inconsequential when measured against the size...and POWER of the Galaxy itself.

All of mankind is less than a tempest in a teacup on a Galactic scale.

While you are in the general area of the Coalsack Nebula, be sure to check out the following systems:

HIP 62154
HIP 63835
HIP 78313
Musca Dark Region BG-Y D91

Have fun!

This, when you get out to about 1000 LY or so, look back at the the bubble from your actual cockpit, target sol or something and look back and see what you see. That's the overview effect, its intense to see how small we are.

We're even less significant than that actually. You only need to travel about 60LY out before Sol would become invisible to the naked eye in RL.

When you get 30kylie out, you realize that the worlds of man are not even big enough to be described as "a tiny speck"; there are no words small enough.

I've just got back after my first major trip out and believe me those last 10 jumps back were the worst of my life.

I had just spent the last month travelling and honking my way to Sagi A and returned on 83%.

So I acutally managed to get back home, land with out crashing. Btw I had totally forgot how to land. I were really <Ahem>myself... hehe

Good luck Commander and enjoy the rush ;)

And for when that fails.
Remember where it is in the system functions tab, often better to just find it there rather than manically push random buttons as your pants catch fire.

That will indeed be what it is obvious you should have done after 5 minutes of looking at the insurance screen and quietly weeping as the adrenaline wears off....

675ly out I mismanaged my throttle, emergency stop, 2% damage. Put my tail between my legs, and express-jumped back. 25 jumps at 30+ range. Came home without issue, gained 2,5 million and at least 60 first scans after 160 systems done. Will set out again tonight in a different direction.
