"Close Quarter Combat" - definitely not the direction I hoped ED would take from now...

I was always pretty excited with the new free updates FD announced for ED, even though neither "Community Goals" nor "Wings" nor "Powerplay" introduced the features from the DDA that I waited for - mostly a richer environment, more fleshed-out NPCs and NPC interaction, more varied missions including passenger game play etc.
The updates essentially only catered to the multi player crowd, IMHO.

But the following announcement of "Close Quarter Combat" finally managed to quench my enthusiasm for the future of ED completely:

And this morning we’re also announcing Close Quarter Combat – instant-action PVP combat in the Elite: Dangerous galaxy for PC, Mac and Xbox One.

So, a dog fighting PVP arena mode to satisfy CoD and BF players will be what FD puts it's focus on in the future. Can't say that I am thrilled. :(

The galaxy is a big place, and this will be one of the many things to do in it.
And looking at some of the assets in the trailer (like the billboards and linked station outpost), I imagine it's highly likely they'll make it out and be used elsewhere which should be nice.
As for the fleshing out list of yours, I'm fairly sure that it's just a matter of time.

It's like anything else of that nature. FD wants to cover all of the bases. I see this as an inevitable addition right from the start. I'm not interestec, but surely there is a strong market for an Arena system. Look at it like just another facet of the game.

Wait, you can't see how CQC is adding to a dynamic, adapting universe? Or why it's superior to some DDA features?
Neither can I.

And yes, I'm trolling, but for the love of all that's holy things are getting a bit concerning, really.

CQC looks cute, and a little like "Elite Unreal Tournement" - and very shiny.

It looks like the perfect hook for the console players - so well done FDev.

It also looks like the very very last thing I'll ever do in ED.

Not that anyone needs to care!

:D

You'd think this would make certain "I'm better than console kiddies" people happy - it pushes that crowd away from your space so you don't have to breath the same air.

I'm really looking forward to trying it out tonight. I am extremely disappointed though, in what appears to be a rehash of that awful "flying through rings" mechanic - surely with all the creative ability at FD, something novel could have been implemented? Anyway - I still think it'll be enjoyable.

The problem isn't that a combat arena will exist. The problem people seem to have is that FDevs focus purely on catering towards the multi-player crowd, while a lot of people play Solo. That group gets absolutely nothing from such updates.

I said ages ago that I thought it would be cool if they added an arena mode. Combat is so good and nuanced, that I felt like they needed a mode to show case how great it is.

I guess I'm just a mindless, third grade reading level, console kiddie

Sounds like you'll be trying it out sooner than I will. ;)
