"Close Quarter Combat" - definitely not the direction I hoped ED would take from now...

Agree but i am not going to jump ship. Instead of buying anything i liked to look of i will cut my purchases for merchandise until i see something the devs do for me.

Ohh absolutely. I still like Elite, I'm not jumping ship.

But there are other boats in the vicnity, and if those boats head in directions that look better than Elite, I'm going to be jumping ship. As a result I'm not unpacking anything else on this little boat.

Sorry for torturing the metaphor.

And sorry to FDev for the negativity, but you're not really delivering a living breathing universe like I hoped you would, instead you're delivering a bunch of minigames tacked together by... space... somehow. That might be successful but if that's your ultimate aim it isn't really something for me.

Before Elite: Dangerous Frontier were in game development limbo. I think they've seen this as an opportunity to get them back into the big time. I don't know one person who owns LostWinds, Kinectimals, or Zoo Tycoon, or any of the other kid friendly casual games they've developed over the past 10 years.

There habe been plenty of requests for a pvp arena, long before console versions were announced. Providing it's optional whats the problem?

It's obvious why FD are doing this. They feel they need to continually increase the breadth of the game's features, rather than increase the depth. They feel the need to do this in order to attract new customers, generate new revenue, and satisfy shareholders. Fleshing out what's already in the game and adding depth doesn't attract new customers, it only keeps existing ones, so it will understandably take a back seat. (And to what non-existent competition would existing customers flee to anyway at the moment?)

I can see CQC will be popular with some, just as PP is popular with some. For myself, I have even less interest in CQC than PP. But where am I going to go? Detroit?

I'm mostly a private-group or solo player and like the simulation/sandbox side of the game, but I welcome this arena mode. I see myself going there every once in a while to test my dogfighting skills and blow off some steam in a fun match. :)

I think my problem with "CQC" is we could have got something everyone - or at least those few of us who aren't here for PvP - enjoys.

I really like that they seem to add new station designs as something like "tournament grounds", but stuff like "Wings" or "CQC" just doesn't give me anything if I can't play it with NPCs instead of players if I opt to do so.

That will come with walking around the ship. Space Tamagotchi Pilot. You must prepare nutritional meals out of space debris and alian artifacts while taking care of your pilot's toileting needs in deep space.

Chuckling I almost missed the +Rep button and clicked Report.

Belly laughs - it's what life is about :)

Not something I will play much, but it is probably a very low hanging fruit when it comes to development resources.

It's moron removal mode - when they're playing this it keeps them out of my game :)

Making PvP battles more important will most probably result in the cries for balancing all ships to increase thousandfold, and in the end all ships might get "balanced" so much that they all play and handle the same, exactly like it normally happens in competitive games where players just cry for "balancing".

This is the only real concern I have at this point.

I'm going to reserve judgement on this until I've seen more of it in action.
I'm not in an Xbox household so I'll have to wait until the PC release.

Things that did stick out of the trailer were the power-ups, enclosed spaces, destructible environment and trailing the energy ball on a tether (capture the flag).

Now I recently backed a Kickstarter for Descent:Underground, and while D:U is set underground it will have power-ups, enclosed spaces, destructible environment and a capture the flag mode...

As for this

...I got the impression it is a limited subset of ships. Sidey, Eagle and the like.

I agree. They ought to bring in a human v drone mode of some sort for Private group and Solo players, as they ought to bring in NPC wingmen for hire. We can but hope for the sake of you guys in other game modes that this will happen.

Is CQC going to make Elite: Dangerous more suitable for e-sports competitions? Consequence-free pew pew pew doesn't sound that bad to me. And anything that raises the profile of the game means more sales and more chance of interjected content.

I'm hoping they also add some sort of arena-based pylon racing.

I have to wonder what the devs actually want to do with their game. Do they want to make an MMO? Why are the social aspects of the game so underdeveloped then? Is it supposed to be a single player game? Why can't I influence the world in a meaningful way then? Is it supposed to be a PvP focused game? Why even have an open world at all then?

They already have CQC, its called Powerplay. Ben playing since beta and I have been attacked only 3 times with the intention of just taking me out. Since power play and pledging to a power, I can be attacked 3 times a night just because FD has labled me an enemy to 9/10 if the powerplay arena. It used to be if you wanted to avoid pvp, just don't go to lave, now you cant even fly to your own capitol system without being jumped by an opposing power wing. Seems FD has decided the direction of open is PVP whether you want it or not.

i like space story, space opera, scientific datas, i love Kerbal Space Program and such stuff. I Hate no brain pvp quake-like, Counter strike and such stuff.
i know nobody will force me to play pvp arena, but when i hear words such as 'console', 'arena', 'pvp' i know this is not the game i wanna play anymore.

Here comes the 'realistic space engine simulator created for 'money farming' and 'pvp arenas'
