"in coming months we’ll be able to talk about what’s next for Elite: Dangerous on PC and Mac too"

I'd consider that to be reading too much between the lines, or at least quoting out-of-context. He does say "soon" in the same press release
Well. "Soon" is more often used to give a positive spin on a non-defined time in the future than actually meaning "in the near future" to in a context understandable for the people it is being said to.

The only time frame given in "in the coming months". Not "days" or "weeks". So I find it hard to to read it as the primary indicator of when to expect anything... And even then it is only talk about what is coming.

I'd consider that to be reading too much between the lines, or at least quoting out-of-context. He does say "soon" in the same press release, and from playing the XboxOne version this morning, apart from the nice touches like the onscreen control prompts (I could actually play through the first four tutorials without thinking about a manual, and I've never used a gamepad for ED!), it's identical to the PC version. David Braben alludes to that in his press release too, as well as saying that the Xb1 version has helped improve the PC version. Given that the XboxOne is almost just a gaming PC anyway, there's no real reason to think that it's going to eat too much time up, any more than working on the Mac version will.

I think it's dangerous to read too much into pre-prepared press releases anyway. We'll see what's announced for 1.4 soon enough...

Some other incomplete half asked bolt on...

FIRST RULE OF GAME DEVELOPMENT... GET THE SODDING CORE OF THE GAME COMPLETED FIRST... THEN ADD STUFF LIKE POWER PLAY AND CQC

In the mean time you can release snippets of what you are planning to do to make our mouths water...

That'd be a really altruistic attitude on FD's part... not known for their altruism are they however. I suspect they'll see that as "throwing good money after bad" and focus on expanding the money spinners - continued development on the xbox and bringing it out on the ps4.

Not really .. Its one code base in the end .. once they have all the performance and controls tweaking in place for each platform, future changes should be deployable with ease. I can't see the issue myself ..

Of course FD will chase the money, that's what is keeping the servers going ... Without that we would't even have the game. But I don't think they are suddenly going to abandon the PC version simply to focus on 'console' content ... CQC is the only 'console' content currently and is no real surprise, the rest will jsut be future development and expansions which will affect ALL platforms equally ...

I think peeps are worrying over nothing at the moment ...

SC's persistent universe won't be out for a long time. Elite Dangerous is the premier space sim that be available on every major gaming platform years before SC.

that's true, but Frontier's better use this time well to add depth and causality to the galaxy; as of now, the past six months of "continued development" and this new announcement aren't exactly encouraging...

they know SC will win on PC and no man's sky on ps4 so they are developing for XBONE pretty exclusively PP was proof of that 3 months and look what we got? some pictures.......

I smell desperation with Sc breathing down their neck, from what I saw it will launch with approximately 1697% more content and features, they can only make as much money by throwing what they have out the door on as many platforms as possible before Sc launch, and hope some people will accidentially even confuse it with Sc.

This is an honest question .... Has there been any mention of the paid expansions directly, as in, Actually saying that Planetary landing/Walking about are being worked on not just "We are working on 'Stuff'..." since (if not from before) the release of the actual game?

I can't recall ever seeing it actually being said since the kick-starter, I'd be very happy to see the words "We are working on Walking about/Planetary landing" from a dev.

Like I said it's an honest question .. and I could of easily missed it.

SC is coming out at the end of 2016 in best case scenario. No Man's Sky is timed PS4 exclusive, most likely released to PC also in 2016.

Also trust me, SC won't have much more content and features.

Only mention has been Michael saying that they hiring extra people to handle both core gameplay and expansions. Judging by buzz around their jobs offering they actually hire more people. Will it be enough to give constant pace of updates plus expansions in relative future remains to be seen.

So. Yesterday was another brilliant day in the life of the ED community. FDev continues to play their odd marketing tricks on a a community that has already bought their game. And refuse to say anything with any actual meaning...

What trick are you talking about? They are just telling us more will be revealed in coming months. And to be honest I would be very reluctant to say anything precise or specific if I were FD. Look at the community they have: whatever statement they make, people always complain and start arguing. People even argue over speculations and things that might never be in the game. Should they decide to communicate about everything they would be entirely buried under complaints.
They are not accountable to us, please let them do there game and tell us more in due time.

How many times do the developers need to say that PC/Mac won't be left at the side of the road, and that PC is the primary development platform?

Zero, since people whining about XBO are not listening anyway. Some PC players love to see consoles as a threat and so on, so whatever happens with XBO they will always find a way to complain about it.

Honestly: how could anyone expect anything else? Getting this engine to the xbox will be a major piece of work.
This engine is years old and is made for cross platform. Nothing to work on it is already working. Besides why are you talking about the future when there is already a working XBO version? It's interesting to see how many people are freaking out when they hear consoles. Why can't we great consoles' players just like we did with the Mac players?

Specifically "marketing tricks". They are consistently not telling us anything about what their plans are. Then as we get closer they will put out silly little teasers to string us along. Only to very close to release of a feature tell us what it is actually about.

A very odd tactic for someone trying to keep a positive community going. At least I feel like we are being toyed with more than being talked with.

eyeroll

I think all of this has been a knee jerk reaction from alot of people and we haven't heard significant comment from whats coming for PC and their current work, which we will.

(they are patching now, did you read the patchnotes?)

Well then why would they have to tell us about their plans anyway? Look at this thread and half of the other threads on this forum: people are constantly complaining. This is not marketing trick, this is simply trying to do their job without having to report to a bunch of angry players anytime they try to do something. Communicating extensively is time and resource consuming. Instead they decide to focus on making the game. That's not a trick and that's fortunate.

I'm sure opinions differ. But I'd suggest that being more open about the plans for ED would make for calmer community. Since there would be less unknowns to fight over.

Sure. "in the coming months"... So enjoy more of it for the foreseeable future.

Check out the Dev Diaries from Kickstarter. People paid hefty sums for that game to be developed, essentially paying FDs salaries. FD went quiet a long time ago after accepting the money, and have yet to deliver on any of the KS expectations for the game they promoted. Further, what they have done since, is not inline with the expectations they gave in return for money.
-We need more communication from FD so we can see they still plan to honour their side of the agreement. People complain because they brought a product -albeit in development- and now see no effort or commitment from the supplier to deliver it.

<snip>

Or maybe ALL platforms will get developed for equally .. Anything they do on the PC code front can now be easily ported over to Mac and Xbox ... None of this means the end of the PC version of the game! ... Over dramatising it a bit I think!

That'd be a really altruistic attitude on FD's part... not known for their altruism are they however. I suspect they'll see that as "throwing good money after bad" and focus on expanding the money spinners - continued development on the xbox and bringing it out on the ps4.

This isn't the way it works, generally. There is one code base, built for different platforms. At a certain point, the lower level API layers diverge to platform-specifics... but seeing as FD's engine is in-house, and is cross-platform, that point will be deep down... not something you see at the application level.

One of my company's products builds on seven different platforms, from a single code base. The product is the same on all of them. You don't "develop" one version, then the next; you develop The Product, then build and test on all platforms.

So does that mean they'll have nothing to say about the game at E3 PC?

Or perhaps they'll talk about the Xbox timed exclusive CQC at the PC conference
