Frontier: Don't waste the E3 opportunity, please learn your market.

As a developer I can't help but worry that Braben and co. have lost sight of the core aspect of Elite and the game is suffering feature creep that was never part of the original design but someone thought it would be "cool" to add them as they would appeal to a larger audience.

This video is a fine analogy of video game development and how feature creep can completely change the face of your game if you don't stick to your core aspects:

Oh how i chuckled. Many a project i have been could of learned a lesson from this:)

They got the founding money from us 84´ers, now they swing around to please the consoleros.
what the hell has happened to this franchise....

Yeah it's kind of frustrating that the income for the different core careers in elite is so disproportioned and still lacking depth while they role out gimmicky new features like cqc and pp (just my opinion). I think many on this forum would agree that the next major update to elite should focus on expanding and improving the core game and not adding any more features until the core game is ironed out.

Whats frustrating is the idea that there are exclusive careers. A game thrives on diversity and variety... and CQC, as a structured PvP environment has been badly needed from the get go.

The "Core Game" is molded by direction given to players through missions. CQC will be the only good update this game has had, if it's integrated in to the universe properly.

I'll just leave this here: "No Man Sky" E3 gameplay

If what they are doing is driving us away, then we all always look for the alternatives.

This does look really cool -- cant wait to see how they implement trading.

In particular I'd like Frontier to see how, for example, including laser guns in Assassins Creed would be a massive failure. Or see how having Batman ride a horse through Arkham Knight would completely ruin the game.

-Bolded-

That would be AWESOME !!!

sorry .... but it would :)

What really needs to happen now is for Frontier to find out who it is they want to appeal to with this project, focus on them, and regain a sense of direction.

The game is going all over the place.

People who like adventure/exploration/mystery? Those are my people ;)

I think the sad fact is that what once could have been the best role playing space exploration game ever made* is slowly being turned into Call of Duty in space.

*It may still be if they sort out the missions system and fix the underlying problems instead of adding gimmicks.
I agree +1 Rep

Ouch. Very good parody of things though.

Yes I can say I am worried that ED will turn into just another shoot-em up.

Combat is a strong point of ED and many people prefer it over the combat in SC, so focusing on it is natural. Trade is shallow and inconsequential, mining boring and inconsequential, and you can't get very much out of exploration currently (which is just a real shame).

I also would hate for ED to be 'just another shoot 'em up'. I envisaged ED as primarily an exploration game punctuated by violence, politics, and opportunity. But there is not much to do and there's not much to find just yet. I think that's why people farm credits mostly, it's not really their fault- they find the most meaningful thing to do in the game which is making cash. If the game was strong on the adventure, interesting characters, unique and rare finds, extended branching stories... people would do that instead.

What would have been "cool" and stopped the new gamers getting bored would have been a deeper and more immersive universe. A deeper missions system. More diversity between the Empire, Alliance and Federation station designs, space weather, comets, asteroid fields with pirate bases hidden in them, events where you have to protect an outpost from a pirate raid... There's lots of stuff the could have added to the game before they felt the need to go down the MOBA route.

Well, I am not bored, but I want everything you listed :).
I love this game but immersion wise it is lacking in important areas.

The areas around stations are not really alive. We need nice yellow utility vessels, repair and maintenance ships with blinking lights doing their jobs. There need to be large tanker vessels. I also feel there should be multiple facilities in the same areas. Huge container areas and large fuel tanks. I want to see a large shipyard with ships under construction and ships being repaired. I want to see true awe inspiring armed military bases with large military ships docked. I want to enter a prison system and see a true, well guarded space prison that looks totally different from current stations. Or what about real science bases that ooze science with huge telescopes, enormous radio dishes etc.

Imagine entering a system and recognizing the allegiance of it simply by glancing at the style of the space station.
Stuff like this would be a game changer. It would have an enormous influence in how people perceive the game. It would increase the immersion factor a thousand times.

FD must think bigger. This CQC thing is fine and people will no doubt enjoy it, but it is not at all important for what Elite truly is.
At the FD offices there should be hanging one huge blinking neon word on the wall: IMMERSION.

Exactly right. That's what I meant by 'exploration' btw, experiencing the world.

Well they truly gone and ruin the immersion aspect of the game by completely separating this CQC game instead of integrating it into the current game.

An Arena mode that has been hinted at in the game files since release is slowly turning into Call of Duty in space? Power Play adding a strategic layer that can be expanded upon for more depth in the future is slowly turning into Call of Duty in space? Have you played Call of Duty?

You agree with it turning into Call of Duty in space? What the hell is going on in your minds?

I'm starting to think that FD are worried about cash flow and further development, hence CQC for XBOne. Hopefully, now PP and CQC are in place, FD will concentrate on depth/immersion in 1.4.

Our last best hope.

The game mechanics of PvP Piracy are a travesty, CQC will possible bring a competitive element to the game instead of adversarial imbalanced grief mechanics.

Wow... This is probably the most rational look at CQC I've seen yet. Jaeger please, this kind of rationale on the forums in a time like this worries me.
