If I said 'Lenslok' how many commanders would smile...

Never had to deal with it. The closest I got was the old "turn to page 14 of your manual, what is the third word in the fifth paragraph?" type of DRM.

I think Starflight had one where you needed to use the map and a colored filter to count the number of stars in a quadrant as well.

I remember my dad buying a box of used game cassettes for the Spectrum for me back in the mid to late 80's. Amongst them was Elite, but on loading found it required a lenslok and there wasn't one in the case.
Now, I already had one of these things for Tomahawk (an Apache helicopter simulator). Sadly I couldn't get it to work, despite trying a number of times. Guess they must of had different lenses.
Mind you, I couldn't get it to work half the time with the correct game. Hateful thing.

Didn't get to experience Elite for a few more years until Elite+ on the 386.

Yes, I remember that. On the Speccy.

I made it to Elite on the Speccy, thought I never quite got that far on the C64 or the Atari STe.

Now, pushing 60, I'm happily off in the black, exploring. I no longer have the reactions (or eyesight) for close encounters... ;)

I played Elite back in the day's on my Speccy 48k and was the most annoying about the game, luckily we manged to get a copy of the 128k verson of the game ane there fore no need for the Lenslok, but those where the day's with 5 min+ load times

I used it too, but only once per game. Had 128k and a floppy on the Amstrad and soldered some switches to the CPU and the memory controller. After loading of any game was complete, I used the switches and was left with a copy of the fully loaded game on the second memory bank. Dumped that to the floppy and just had to find entry point. Worked like a charm, for any game, no matter how tough the copy protection was.

more of a grimace than a smile

get it wrong 3 times and reload the game

They were a nightmare to tread on in bare feet, nearly as bad as a mains plug :)

Or Lego, Stickle Bricks and possibly the metal Maccano Sets........-shudders at memories of pulling lego out of your foot at 3am in the morning after you gathered the courage to let go of the ceiling-

Relax everybody -no need to panic about being locked out of Elite, because there's an emulator here.

I remember them. I also remember the "magic button" device that would dump the entire memory of a Spectrum into a micro drive and the CPUs registers *after* getting past it and then reload it all so your games could carry on from where you left off. I never needed the Lenslock again. :D

I would squint both eyes, grimace and then depending if I got it right either smile or curse!

Lenslok causing squiffy eyes since 84:). I'm sure there were a couple of other games that used it too...

Quite a few had those bloody things. I worked for a computer store in the late 80's and early 90's, and absolutely hated those things, especially when we were trying to demo software for someone.
