HOTAS (x52p) to Xbox 360 controller = nightmare.

I've been playing with an x52pro HOTAS since last summer. It broke a few weeks ago. Now I'm stuck with an Xbox controller for a bit and boy does it suck. Never realized how spoiled I was until my HOTAS broke. For anyone still using an Xbox controller or K&M, do yourself a favor and get a good HOTAS, it's a game changer. Maybe if I had started on a controller instead of the x52 I'd be ok but, wow what a difference.

Sorry to hear it broke :(

Hopefully you can fix it or get it replaced? and yeah I've tried using a controller and it's quite awful.

Saitek has a two year warranty on the x52pro but, I can't find my reciept and I paid cash for it. My only hope is to get my account info direct from MicroCenter (retailer purchased from) to prove I bought the thing. Pretty good warranty but, it looks like it'll be a couple more weeks before I can sneak a new x52p into the house :D

Wonder how many xbox gamers will ragequit because they cant get to grips with the controls on the controller

But I love my warthog hotas :)

I feel for you. I have a, very old, Thrustmaster HOTAS, it is so old its called the “Top Gun Afterburner II “. It lasted about 10 yrs. so no complaints there but it does seem to be on its last legs . Biggest bummer is I am a recent cancer patient that is, currently, out of work because of the disease. The cost of chemotherapy treatment just about busted me so there isn’t much hope in sight of being able to replace it in the near future and I don’t look forward to having to resort to my Windows gamepad.

if i bought a nearly 200 dollar joystick i'd be pretty livid and not happy about having to pay for shipping only to get a refurbished warranty fixed unit back after less than a year.

I expect that from my <$30 logitech extreme3d. That's why it's 30 bucks. Everytime i consider getting the x52 i see stuff like the OP and it keeps me away.

you say get a good hotas then refer to the x52p....

going from a 360 controller to a x52 (two of them), then pro, then x55 (two of those also) and eventually settling on a thrustmaster warthog, i'd happily go back to a 360 controller than settle for anything made by madcatz...i mean seriously they bolt on the saitek name just so people dont know they make the products.

Exactly RipperJack I had a warthog but broke it myself (overpowered a usb hub) So brought the cheaper X55 Rhino and hated it sold it after a week and brought myself another warthog

With the right setup, I find my XBox controller more than adequate - I only need the keyboard for chat and map

i bought an X52 to replace my xbox controller but in the end i kept using the xbox controller and sold the X52 on, if you are used to a control pad its not a problem and i'm guessing if you own an Xbone you are going to be used to playing with a controller instead of a joystick anyway.

I can only imagine (never having used a HOTAS setup) that it is actually easier to pull off some complex manoeuvring with two directional sticks on the controller than it would be with on stick plus button modfiers...

I can't imagine playing this game with a 360 controller, but I do play it quite often with just KB+M. I use joystick normally, but for anything short of PvP or Assassination missions, KB+M works well.

i used kb+mouse and after x52p, both for quite a long time and found it is actually easier to aim and win interdiction games with kb+mouse

HOTAS just feels way more comfortable to play though

I don't agree. I have a X-52 Pro and a Logitech Dual Action gamepad. Because of the arcady flight model, the precision of the X-52 is not needed (unlike in other games like X-Plane), but the huge size blocks access to Keyboard and mouse for me.
So I started out with a flightstick and have been playing with the gamepad ever since.

Having had a console since the Atari wooden jobby, I am no stranger to control pads and joysticks. I use my xbox one controller and aside from a few non essential bits and pieces on the K/B I have mapped pretty much everything I need to the controller. I find it much better than a stick, but I guess its what you are used to. I can not fathom in these austere times why anyone would pay hundreds of pounds just for a joystick, unless it has draught beer flowing out of it with one button, and sweeps up while you are asleep.

I started out with an X52 Pro as well and couldn't for the life of me get into the keyboard+mouse controls. When I was stuck with a Laptop for a while I took the time to configure the keyboard and mouse for me and - surprise - it works excellently.

The key for me was to remap rolling to keyboard keys and yawing to the mouse's x-axis. You need a lot more precision when yawing than when rollong, so it fits much better to the mouse axis and was a lot more intuitive that way for me. And gimbaled weapons. Although I'd wager that fixed weapons would work as well if I weren't as lazy.

Now to the Gamepad... Although I have never seriously tried it, the only place where I see it not holding up to the other options is aiming with fixed weapons. Mapping rolling on the shoulder buttons, yawing to the stick's x-axis and pitch to the y-axis, on the triggers and sideways and up-/down-thrust to the other stick should make for a fine setup. Will have to try it some time...

I'm also an X52 Pro owner and I've gone through 3 rma's!

A while back I set out to learn how to use an Xbox controller, its OK, but by no means do I feel like I have anything like the control I have over my ship with a HOTAS. Its kind of relaxing to use when trading or exploring, but I don't think I'd dare use a controller for combat!

Things may change if FD import the new Xbox control method to PC/Mac and also using the new Elite Xbox controller may bring its own benefits, but for now I feel like the HOTAS is a much better fit.

Whenever something I really liked breaks, I take it as an excuse to spend some money on something even better. Get a Rhino or a Warthog. I have been playing with the Rhino for quite some time and when it breaks I sure am going for the Warthog! :)

I bought a X55 just for Elite but played a bit with a PS4 Controller while i just traded.
As soon as i begun to smuggle and had to slip into the stations fast and quiet, i switched back to the X55... it's a massive change in the amount of control you have with all axis and thrust and systems intuitive all over the Hotas system. Let aside the extremely improved immersion.
