Greetings Commanders
For those of you new to these dev updates my name is Michael Brookes and I’m the Executive Producer on Elite: Dangerous. This week’s news has focused on the upcoming Xbox One release of Elite: Dangerous and in this update I will take a different angle on the news and talk about what the Xbox One release means for PC and Mac players.

The most obvious news is the addition of CQC (Close Quarter Championship) to the game. This is a visceral and fast paced PVP arena combat mode within the game and while it’s something we’ve had in mind for some time it’s such a natural fit for the Xbox that it will be one of the very rare times that a feature does not appear on PC or Mac first. However we are aware that there is an appetite for arena based combat on PC and Mac so CQC will be coming to those platforms for free before the end of the year.

Controls are an obvious difference between consoles and PC/Mac and we needed to adapt the game so that it could be played with just a controller. However we also wanted to make sure that the controls were not simplified into a lesser game. The game on Xbox One is the same game on PC and Mac, so we’ve added a layer of context controls to the Xbox One version allowing greater access to in-game controls than the current controller implementation. Having played with the new method it’s much more accessible and ideal for those not using HOTAS or keyboard and mouse. It’s also a win for those playing in VR. The controller is already a popular choice on PC/Mac so this new method will be brought across, and offered as an additional controller option.

One advantage to developing on consoles is that you have a static hardware target and this can be a boon for profiling and optimising the game. As with the Mac release some of those optimisations are specific to the platform while others are more agnostic and are beneficial across all platforms. Not only does this improve performance for lower end machines, but is likely to help with higher end machines.

Bringing the game to a new platform means revisiting existing systems in the game and so allowing another pass for tweaks and fixes to the game. Any such changes made during the Xbox One development will naturally come across to the other platforms.

The most obvious benefit comes from the income. We have chosen not to go down the route of subscriptions or ‘pay to win’, but we do need income to support the game, and so far most of that is coming from adding new customers, so it is in all our interests to get more people playing.

PC remains an important priority for us, indeed it is the lead platform for development. While we’re not talking about some of the major new future additions coming first to PC and Mac just yet, you can expect news on this ‘soon’!

Guess these will be on the community site from now on and not the forum?

I think there has been a lot of negativity re the xbox release and even if some points may well be valid, I think Michael makes a really good point about the need to secure revenue. When put in this way I find myself understanding and in agreement. I think everyone can appreciate the point being made and it just goes to show how reaching out to us and explaining the reasons for etc, goes a long way in creating good will.

I'm excited about CQC coming to the PC because it looks like fun but I can wait.. :) Really enjoying ED these days so thanks to the whole team for all their efforts ;)

As someone who has used a controller from day one I look forward to seeing how it might add to my experience. One of the things I would like is for there to be a sensitivity slider for roll, pitch and yaw.. It would let me use fixed weapons and give me the same degree of fine ship control that those playing with a HOTAS enjoy :)

I just want the line of sight radar thats in CQC to be added to the main game!

Also, does this mean less of the exciting telegrams from Michael Brookes too?

The line that disturbed me the most

"The most obvious benefit comes from the income. We have chosen not to go down the route of subscriptions or ‘pay to win’, but we do need income to support the game, and so far most of that is coming from adding new customers, so it is in all our interests to get more people playing."

So their priority is getting new players instead of focusing on finishing and polishing the product into what it was intended to be.

I'm all for letting them add in small purchases like skins, bobbleheads - heck I'd even pay for hud customizations such as colors fonts etc.

Can't help feel like 'The current people have paid their money so they are unimportant now. Our goal is to add new customers' we've been de-prioritized.

That's at last an honest appraisal and would have FD stepped up and put it like this I guess a lot of negative responses could have been avoided. The 'natural fit' et all is just window dressing. XBox first so no pay to win? Fine, that works. Just say it for Pete's sake!

Truth. I can respect sound management. I no respect for newspeak.

Got renamed...

Someone knows if it is possible to connect joystick to xbox? Cant imagine playing ED on gamepads...

I use a Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710. Other than a few contoller specific design flaws, since it's based off of the XBox controllers, it works great. I would recommend the Logitech Cordless Romblepad 2 instead; unfortunately mine stopped working.

Anyway, I have my gamepad set up similar to a professional RC flight controller, and the in-menu control setup options work quite well for that, if someone takes the time to go trough them and set them up for use with a capable gamepad.

I pilot RC aircraft with professional competition gear, so using a controller set up similarly is second nature.

So no, gamepad contollers can work very well. Better for me even since my PC (in sig.) is a part of my "home entertainment system" and I play ED from the comfort of lounging on my couch. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse too, but they're better suited to other games.

I see he's still pushing the "better fit for xbox" . PC has higher frame rates, more precise control method, and a more experienced user base... I honestly can't understand why xbox would be a "better fit".

The reality is that it has to do with an exclusive marketing deal with MS, not "better fit" nonsense.

It's interesting how the new 'community site' has no link whatsoever to the forums, isn't it?

Tahat and ever since X1 version was announced people were complaining how "they better not make an arena mode or I'm done!" ;)

I disagree about the "experienced user base" (whatever that means). The better fit for XBox refers not to frame rates or control methods, but to the playing style that consoles generally cater for: turn on, play a bit, turn off. Fast paced shorter gaming sessions rather than long, strategic campaigns.

Hey, I always said I wouldn't buy the XBOX version, but I'm a sucker. It's really cool and in some ways a little more accessible. I love playing on my sofa with my 50 inch flat screen, I hope that we can link accounts and I can fly my main CMDr, you know, the one that actually has money!
