Frontier Needs Money (new Dev Update from Michael).

It is a mistake going exclusive on the X-box platform and not releasing on the bigger PS4 platform at the same time at least. Now Elite is going to release after No Mans Sky. I bet the Microsoft payoff will be no where near the sales they would have made on PS4 pre no mans sky with no space sim on the platform.

Microsoft hardly celebrated the X-box release of Elite, so I doubt much money was exchanged for this deal, if anything.

There's no way FD would make PS4 port before NMS landing on PS4. For XBO it's really low hanging fruit, as XBO OS is Windows 7. For PS4 however they have to add COBRA support for platform too and then port 3D engine to it. It will take some time. However, after seeing real NMS demo in Sony E3 presser I don't think they will compete with each other, at least not at this point.

They could of course have be making the PS4 version in the background I guess. The X-box release the other day was a bit of a surprise, I thought it was coming later in the year - so who knows.

Frontier engine already runs on Xbox One thanks to their work on Screamride. Most of the work was already done.

Yeah this is something I've never understood. I'm happy to buy cosmetics but they've been so slow about giving us stuff to buy. Seeing as it's their ongoing revenue stream I'd have expected the external view and a bunch of decals/paint jobs to have been in for launch but we had to wait months. Even now there really isn't much to buy in the store.

This. Absolutely this.
They have a nice collection of T-shirts. I've four now I believe. If they add more I would be them. NOT interested in the paint jobs (which I can only see when using the debug cam).

I want to recommend the game to people, I can say its good for certain kinds of people at the moment...I want to say get it its going to be awesome even though they are still making it, just the devs need to back me up; they need to say what they are going to add and when, when the next updates are, more communication will reassure buyers that its going to be awesome.

Just need platitudes and reassurance, that would be really great for the market

i have stated many times in the forums for frontier to open up and talk more aobut the paid expansions like planetary landings and ship interiors and space station interiors.
i honestly believe that their silence is on this is simply a silly business decision since it would be one of their brightest point for the game. and the demand for a "space gta" is huge in the gaming industry.
my wallet is ready for the paid expansions but only now have they released news about it and all it was is "we have more news coming soon" so basically news about news.
they really could of shined more at e3 in my opinion
but then again its got a ten year development plan.

It's a bit sad that this should be repeated, but thanks Michael taking time to give some response.

Contextual menus for gamepads sounds really good idea and worthy addition to ED.

I only hope they port it HOTAS also.
The cheaper HOTAS have not that many buttons.

Thanks to Michael for being honest on the income to support relation.

I guess (and lots of other games on different platforms prove), that people are willing to pay small sums in micro-transactions.
A T-Shirt won't sell as good as a paintjob, because it is too expensive in relation to the game.
I would highly recommend to offer things, people would pay for. Some even bought the vibrant paints. Give us Cockpit textures (leather, plastic, metal,...) and lightning to customize, what we see. Give us "good" paintjobs. There already are great ones out there. Give us power-paints and faction paints, integrate the cockpits and paints to the "walk around your boat" update / expansion, or offer different shield and weapon colours as well.

PS: No - the shop may offer it as often as it wants, but I won't buy the paintjobs twice.

and when ship interiors expansion come i can defiantly see people buying "furniture packs" and what not.

So Michael explicitly says in the new update here:

The most obvious benefit comes from the income. We have chosen not to go down the route of subscriptions or 'pay to win', but we do need income to support the game, and so far most of that is coming from adding new customers, so it is in all our interests to get more people playing.

You know what? That's absolutely fine with me. I welcome CQC, I welcome the XBox guys. The more money there is for development the better for everyone. (Speaking of which, you really should make decals and paint jobs in the store a priority).

This week was a bad coincidence for me. I contributed to some of the negativity in the forum, but for a completely different reason. I wanted PC NEWS from E3, I wanted news about the paid expansions (First Expansion Coming Xmas 2015!) or something.

But I was not, have not and shall not be upset about Frontier broadening their revenue stream and welcome their attempts to do so. Thanks for not going 'pay to win'!

Just my two euro-cent.

Some MMO's that are free to play still have subscriptions on a voluntary basis. The perks for being a subscriber in these cases are varied, such as progression rates and UI limits etc. For elite, if there was certain subscriber perks with power-play perhaps, or even just cosmetic benefits, I would opt-in to be a subscriber. I think the subscription model should be re-considered.

I would be very worried if they wouldn't have shown playable XBO port at E3.

I think what should be named differently. Something regular and optional which would offer more variants of paintjobs, or something...Don't call it a sub. Call it 'supporter ticket' or something.

I think they will get around it eventually and will introduce something like this later down the road. It's just not a priority for them atm. Extending player base is.

With so few PC / Mac copies sold they are turnining their attention to the console market.
We wont see any expansion until after any console released IMO.

Can we now stop the hate threads to FD now or are we going to find something else?

I would love to buy more paint jobs, but I don't think they make much money from them.
I'm not sure if i'm going to get the xbox version. I do like the idea of using the new xbox controller with ED. I'm hoping to use extra buttons for SCB, landing, FSD, and landing.

LOL nice. You must be in marketing or politics by posting a single stat to show your message and not necessarily facts!

Let's really look at the detail in your link: game selling $ price is already discounted down 25%, player play-time over past two weeks is down from ~28 hrs/wk to ~16 hrs/wk, max. concurrent players seems to have peaked and is declining, and as for your stat on sales note that number is the "game owners" and not sales by Steam - and how many of these were gifted/free Steam keys from PC owners? We don't know.

Elite is in decline on Steam. It had a short surge. And this isn't surprising.

Edit: to this post topic, does anyone expect new revenue to actually go into E D? The game is released; it's done. It's on sustainment with probably very few staff supporting the game. The lack of any roadmap or hype/concept art/etc. on upcoming expansions from the company is a message in itself. Also look at the quality of truly new content delivered in 1.3? Not much huh. FDev have a new corporate obligation with the just announced roller coaster game, and you can be sure that it will receive top priority to keep the shareholders happy (and for the execs to keep themselves employed and stock bonuses rolling...).
