I guess we're never getting passenger missions.

As of 1.3 beta, the passenger cabins are in the game files in AppData/Frontier.
So I think they're coming really soon.

Well... how about that.

So is this thread basically just like the 'planetary landings aren't happening' one?

Thanks for the find though, that's awesome.

The big differences between planetary landing and passengers are, that we already have the Orca, the Dropship and the Clipper, but we don't have the Shuttle and that passengers and troops can "easily" be implemented, where planetary landing needs a lot more work (worlds surfaces, things to do, maybe even an extension to the game engine itself).

More hope for being either a ferry, a taxi or some kind of luxury tour operator then?

Planetary landings would be great but would this effort be better channeled into core game play for the foreseeable future?

I would laugh my ass off if passenger mission came, and the Clipper was better at them than the Dropship.

that would make sense. The dropship's niche is supposedly to carry military personnel to sites of operations, not civilian leisure/business travel.

Passenger missions are going to feel different to trading how, exactly?
I should imagine it's gonna be bulletin board missions.

Fred Jones needs taking to aulin in less than 2hrs for a meeting but he's In Trouble with the priate gang "the buttaneers" so make sure your ship is armed.... And be careful, they tend to come from behind! :D

Or

Gottalova lotta space needs taking to a conference in sol but must be taken in luxury and must arrive in 10hrs, high end passenger liner type ships only.

Etc
Etc...

The basic idea that has been outlined is this.

Cargo is static, passengers are dynamic.

Passengers could ask you during flight to suddenly do something else: Take a detour, assists another ship in need aligned with that NPC, be asked to go to a location for a secret meeting (which in turn might chain into something else...)

So more chauffeuring than driving a bus.

Depends on who and how many you carry I guess. ;)

In some cases you could also look at it as a captain of a luxury cruiser, maybe being asked to follow a certain route and/or see/find specific sights/landmarks.

The way things are going, they will just appear in the stock exchanges/commodities market and you will buy them by the ton and take them wherever you like. "Job done"

Since Tinman didn't bring the quote up, yet :p

No passenger missions yet, but they're still on the list.

David Braben said something similar in a recent interview, here is the twitch video: http://www.twitch.tv/joystiq/v/6318489

So, no, passenger missions are not forgotten, but thankfully FD wants to get the needed mechanics in place before implementing passenger missions, since the danger of them becoming just renamed cargo missions without additional NPC features is well understood

I would buy a Orca and passenger quarter modules if they brought this in. It makes sense as who else would buy a Orca?

I already bought an Orca just for the hell of it. And I'm mining in some peaceful rings with it. ;)

But yes, finally implementing this passenger system would be most appreciated.
