Take a step back: Lets revisit the advertised vision Frontier Developments has for Elite: Dangerous

I learned two things buying into this game;
I will never buy early/beta/anything that isn't a finished game ever again.
I will not buy digital products until I have reviewed many reviews from users, to include expansions, no matter what my friends say.

Elite Dangerous basically feels as exciting as Dune.

Dune is one of THE most successful sci fi books on the market!. How the hell can you say this and then make it out as a negative?

Read the whole series, (multiple times), seen & bought the film, multiple times on multiple formats, just finished the audio book (whilst playing elite), lining up the TV series soon! and the video game was instrumental in redefining and becoming the defacto standard an entire gaming genre

if in 20 years people compare Elite to dune, in any sense book OR game, then the series will have succeeded imo

as for the rest. covered in multiple other threads. nothing new to see here imo

Why would i even care for my faction

its just another name on a system right now, the only way to capture stuff is grind no challenge content

AA had the right idea, and FD knows it but they will never give them what they want, or what i want and im not even AA

Heres a little tidbit:

Dune: The Suck
1. Too long holy . Sure, I’ll admit, Dune isn’t for es. You have to want to sit down with this and immerse yourself in Herbert’s universe. Like really want to. I don’t care if I sound like a whiner; this book did not need to be this mothering long. Dune is a massive chunk of paper that gets caught up way too often in minor plots, pointless dialog, and boring intrigues that could have been cut or summed up in a page or two while still being artistic. He could have cut the novel in half and it still would have been enormously effective and literally enormous. Don’t think a shorter version would pull if off? Go read the parody version, Doon, and you’ll see how cutting could have worked, and that one was actually a joke.

Just one part of why Dune is pretty boring. Like I said, Elite Dangerous is cool, and so Dune, but at the same time its also soooooo boring. Like, god. I love the amount of depth it has but at the same time I just. Its like, Dr. Zhivago on the scale of how exciting it is. Good movie and everything, but oh man is it so boring.

I'll just stick to my Ciaphas Cain novels instead. Not anywhere near as monolithic as Dune, but plenty enjoyable and hilarious. But really, just trying to read Dune had me a times just...so clustered. I don't think I've ever been angry while reading but I'm pretty sure I had to stop reading just to because I had no idea what the was going on! But hey, since you like Dune, you should check this out too.

That original description posted by the OP is pretty accurate actually, it does describe the game as we have it now.
Yes the game needs more content, better exploration, better mining, maybe even some stories in the way of multi faceted missions, it definitely needs for the AI to have a face, personality ect.
At the moment the end game is of the players choosing.
I recently sold my Python and Type 9, to buy the Anaconda, now i am back to trade grinding again, which does get boring, but i still log in, i am strangly addicted to this game, getting more credits and such, i don't really do PvP, but then i do like the AI interdictions for my piece of combat, and the odd rank progression mission, this just breaks the monotony of trading.
I am grinding to buy my Python back, then i intend to have a fleet of ships, one for each purpose, then i will try out everything possible in the game, then that will probably be my end game now, until some things are added.

I guess the entirety of the internet is absolutely wrong. Yeah, it might not have been advertised as such, but they had no qualms in letting people believe so. FD being tricky to people? Completely unfathomable.

Get real. Wish the weepy-eyed infatuation would wear off of people already because its enough to make me want to throw up. But I guess some people are starting to realize it, based on the amount of activity and posts on the forum. Really, the game from the beginning was a pretty good screwjob. The only reason why FD can't be 100% blamed is because...the real perps are the people who funded it to begin with.

I can't +rep you anymore :(

A 'cut-throat' galaxy where the developers saw fit to put in two carebear modes, solo and private group and have gone out of their way to tell people to block players who have serially interdicted them. :/ Hmm - of course those people are simply playing the game.

When it comes to the OPs post.. a dynamic background sim was always meant to be part of the game but its not quite been delivered as many expected. I suppose PP is just a way to strike some more meaning into the games politics. In my view it would have been better to go with the NPC proposal defined in the DDA. Yet PP does seem like a positive addition - although the afore mentioned opting out of Open kinda ruins it and we end up in a PvE grinding contest with other players who we can't even see which results in me asking myself why do I really care about any of the powers..

Its disappointing the game continues to go out of its way to cater to the carebear crew. :(

Thx for the ideas! Dune was/is awesome and I will be loading it up for my next trade run :)

Have you heard of playergroups? have you heard about the recent conflicts between them, and how people got angry about "5th Columning" and the like? Sounds pretty cut-throat to me.

not wanting you in my game =/= carebear. I just like playing on my own. Given a choice I would MUCH rather frontier had not included competative MP at all, & maybe just added the 4 player wings option for social play (like payday 2) and then made it hard as nails - with the option to choose to reload.

but they had to cater to the pew pew types :(

(see I can paint with pointless wide brushstrokes too! :p )

In someways i must agree with you, if i am trading in an expensive ship. Type9 or Anny, i normally play in the Mobius group, just because i can, and i don't want to risk losing around 10m.
but if i was forced to play open, then the risk would be greater, and so would my heartbeat. It's not the dying really, it is just the hours of grind again to get that 10m back. Or even 13m if i have my anny loaded with imp slaves, (7m rebuy + 6m cargo)

Thx for the ideas! Dune was/is awesome and I will be loading it up for my next trade run :)
the first game i ever played was dune on the pc, as i remember, it was the first Command & conquer type game.

Well mate, go play eve online ;)

Just saying, those "carebears" backed this game too. Don't disrespect people naming and shaming.

Agreed with these parts. So many people in open want someone to say "pvp mate?" , "wanna duel?" or suchlike before they get shot at. I like the plum pumping tension when I see a hollow box interdict me. Dangerous IS actually the name of the game.

I would say too many people want to play the role of a psychopath but then do not want to live with the consequences. To me the "carebear" (hate the phrase and thought it was considered derogatory in these parts) is the player who wants to watch the world go boom, by blowing up sidewinders etc in their vulture etc, but then do not want to sleep in the bed they lie in. Too many hypocrites imo. Want to act like a terrorist then live like one too, on the outskirts of space, hunted by everyone and hated by most.

a hypocrite is always more laughable than a "carebear" imo. (not aimed at you btw but so long as those types exist in open and go unpunished I have no interest in sharing my game time with them)

The second I know a player who causes X number of hrs disruption across a number of CMDRs faces even close to an equal number of hrs of disruption themselves I will be back in open.

Remember that guy who blew someone up at Sag A??? he sould be facing at LEEST a month in game time of being hunted mercilessly. untill that happens how someone can call an explorer wtih months of time to lose due to 1 prat with nothing to lose a carebear for not being happy about it I will never understand..

If I can sum up for FDEV:

* People are praising the visual, audio, and spaceship simulation aspect of the game. +1
* People are complaining about the gameplay design around the game, the implementation of the MMO aspect. -1

Do the math, FDEV. For 1.4, please either:

* Add more depth and content to the spaceship simulation
* Change direction of the MMO game design implementation
