Warning for all players looking to buy expensive ships!!

It depends on the type of ship for me. Combat ships really need upgrades straight away. Trade or multi-purpose ships can be used to make money to upgrade them. I bought a Python and only had enough to make a trade ship and basic bounty hunting, made the cash then to upgrade, now it's fully upgraded and it's a beast.

This is good advice. The situation is particularly compounded by the fact that the Vulture is *such* a good combat ship.

I had heartache for some time after upgrading from a Vulture to a FDL and then Python; you're spending exponential money for incremental growth. Now that I've got an 'A' kitted Python I've actually stored it and gone back to a Vulture!

This issue with the Vulture...for those that are new to the game....is that it was originally pinned to be a 20 million credit ship just for the base model. Because of the outcry on the forums that it was too expensive they reduced the price to 5 million. Because the price was reduced so drastically it gives a false impression of what you need for a really good combat ship. It has become a ship that is easily attained in the first week or two of play when it should have been a ship that takes at least a month. But all that aside, I like the fact that newer players can get the Vulture relatively soon. It helps them become competitive to the veteran players sooner....offering more challenges and fun for veterans.

I don't really agree with this. I really appreciated flying my D rated Pythoin (then) and Conda (now) and upgrading piece by piece until I had the ship I want. It just suits more the narrative I have in my head.
Obviously, you still need a bit of spare money for insurance + armament and some better module (power distributor is a must), but saying you HAVE to wait until you accumulate double the price of the ship you want is a bit silly. My 170M Cr Conda is holding it's own in any RES, and I have great fun flying it. Might not be optimal, but it's good enough.

That is how I play it out too. When I bought my Python I just traded with it buying upgrades for it along the way and now it is fully A specced. I recently bought a Vulture and outright had the cash to A spec it as soon as I bought it but then ended up having to strip it so far back to get the power under control it kinda felt like a waste of money.

If there is a sale on then there is nothing wrong with going out and buying a new hull, just don't try and fly it immediately. I saved a packet on my Clipper doing this. Just don't sell everything you have to buy the new ship. I too have been burnt (on my first Asp purchase) by doing this.

To me this stuff is part of Elite, it is about learning stuff all the time, yes it can be painful sometimes but that is Elite.

I know right! Way to encourage people to participate...by trashing them when they are trying to be helpful....

+1 to you for calling out the haters and +1 for the o.p. for joining the forums and offering advice!

Here we go yet again!
I can NOT be described as a 'hater'. (I presume you were including me in your statement).
I carefully qualified my response to the op to point out that I was surprised, not criticising. What is wrong with you people? You make this forum sheer torture at times!

I know it's tough but just ignore the negative ats , they have ran this forum long enough . It's great to read helpful posts instead of the normal negative crap they think is important .

Good advice O.P.

You always need to consider the cost of upgrades.

For examply. Python is 56 mill to purchase.....160 mil to A-Grade it not including any additional armor you may want...which can almost double the total price.

Amour on Python ? Come on You dont want that, you want SCB's and Boosters, when your shields fail, its time to leave Dodge. Armour on python eats away jump range.

Cheers Cmdr's

#2 - FULLY upgrading it

I only strongly disagree with your second point.
You do not need money to FULLY upgrade your ship at all.
The initial money you need for upgrades totally depends on what you plan to do with the ship.
A basic trade build can be much cheaper than a full combat build.

I started out with a trading Python myself.
It bought it when I had approximately 90 mill in the bank.
I only upgraded some necessary components. I downgraded the shield, added some defenses.

Now I own a very expensive Combat Python.
The engine alone costs more than 50 million, I have almost every component A grade.
I could have bought at least two trading Pythons for it. :)

Sorry,

I meant hull plating. I have the SCB's and Boosters. I don't care about jump range on my combat ships and if it becomes an issue it's usually pretty easy to switch back to regular hull plating...travel to combat location and re-outfit the hull plating.

My rule of thumb is, double the asking price of the ship
Depends on the ship and what you want to do with it.
If I want a trader I'd say you can get away with less than double the price
Example (Trader): T9: cost 79m. Upgrades to make it a good trader 30m. With another 12-15m in the bank you can trade (or have a couple of accidents)
Example (Explorer): Asp 6m. The drive and a good fuel scoop alone is gonna set you back 25m or so.
Example (Fighter): A kitted Vulture will be somewhere around 20m (and it costs like 2.5m?)...and there's no point in flying a non-kitted fighter.
Example (Miner)...erm..haven't tried that in a while, so I have no clue. But I guess that one should be rather cheap to kit.

160 mil to A-Grade it not including any additional armor you may want
Personally don't see the point in military armor or armor upgrades (execpt for PvP. Maybe). If you ever get your shields taken down it's time to go. And even light armor will give you plenty of time to escape.

It's because more and more new players are signing off the newcomer forum, and coming to this sub-forum which consists of a lot of people who are very familiar with how the game works. So the posts are well-intended, but ultimately more helpful to new players than anyone else. PSAs such as the above should really be posted on the newcomer forum, not here, but drawing the line and making that determination is tough for a newcomer trying to be helpful.

It's not the newcomers who loose expensive ships without their re-buy covered.
It's experienced players with the "won't happen to me" attitude.
Nothing wrong with you trying to be helpful of course.

A rough guide is that you need 50% more than the base price in order to cover basic upgrades. To fully upgrade a ship you need about 500% of the base price.

So don't start looking for an Anaconda until you've got 220mc (or about 190mc if you get it discounted)

This........
The vulture is just a bargain for what you get. Fdl in my opinion is just mew.
How ever prefer a d grade python to vulture. After the python the vulture just gathered dust.

Alot is on expectation bigger is not always best one would expect fdl to be awsome but hard points and power just let in down. Many will disagree. Maybe when more selection of huge weapons it will have a role for me.

What I do, is buy the ship at the baseline price, but keep my existing ship to make money, until i can afford to kit the new one out properly.

That way at least I can sit in the cockpit, even If I don't take it out straight away :)

Thanks OP, despite what anyone says I found this a helpful thread.

As for the newcomers forum... There is one? I figured that was just another hello place and didn't even bother with it!

Now that's a great idea! :D

With Mirrored Reflective and proper use of silent running you can stay around to fight in a PvP engagement rather than immediately having to high tail it just because your shields fail.

the whole topic makes me think of the pic above.

the whole topic makes me think of the pic above.

I think any intelligent player could make the mistake of assuming that a ship which costs well over double the sell price of your current ship should be superior. Far from common sense IMO, thus why I created the thread - to help other players - not to poke fun at players' intelligence levels.
