Anyone remember this old article about Elite 4?

PC Gamer UK - July 2004 (Rome: Total War cover)

Release date: Mid 2006 :D

Haha in the Elite/X series thread we are asked to not bash the X universe and here is David ripping into it!

The 'Braben Defence' should be legal.

Article 1, Subsection 4: A person may, in certain circumstances, defend his position should he/she emulate David Braben. This includes crime up to, but not restricted to; Smuggling, attempted genocide, slave trading and game series critique.

Well, to be frank, I fully agree with him. First X game openly tried to cash in on legacy of Elite, without offering even real planets or space around them. Yeah, I know, it is completely different game, but why trying to cash on nostalgia even if you don't try to recreate how game looked like.

I was only thinking about that PC gamer article the other night, also remember that Play.com had pre bookings for Elite 4 on the PS3 for several years after that.

Was there going to be a 'multiplayer version'?

Yup. Saw it recently in a different thread...;)

Was it the full article? The one in the OP looks like just part of it, i'd love to read the whole thing :)

interesting bit that jumped out at me in terms of the general split in these forums on original Elite vs Frontier (and onwards) and the various topics that have sprung up around that:

..The major difference is that now you're a person, not a spaceship. You don't even have a spaceship at the start of the game.

It was the full article, yep. It's a photo I took of a mag I had. Sorry for blurry text.

DB's ripping apart of X is probably the most interesting though.. :D And I think, well deserved. Today, everything is so sensy feely, and we can't actually say our opinion on things out of fear of the Political Correctness Police.

It's not rude to say that X was a pale shadow of what Elite represented back in the day. For me, X was a big step downwards in scale and ambition from FFE.

The only positive thing I can say about X is that it kept alive the fire of space games.

Hey good news though.....If you still have it pre ordered you can claim the boxed version when it is released for that price ....

Cheaper than if you upgraded your pledge :D

You have fun now trying to get Play.com to honour that! :D That hoax advert caught out a few people.

FD had announced Elite several times, im under the impression that in 2004 FD said that they would begin work on Elite4 after some mobile game had been completed. I remember registering on the forum back then to see what what happening, really don't know why I wasn't able to find my original login for the forums when I re registered back in 2012.

What's just as interesting about that photo in the mag is the BT ad next to it.

£19.99 a month for a whopping 512kbps? I think they are still providing that service to some BT customers today!

Thanks for posting the interview. I love the fact that, like playing the game, even Elite 4's development history has real depth :)

Interesting that single- & multi-player were described as different versions. In a way I'm glad that implementation has been delayed so that better technology (including broadband) now exists to realise David's vision.

Yeah, vaguely. I definitely had that magazine, it was what started my Total War career with Rome. :)

Ah, I started my Total War lifestyle with Shogun: Total War. And that game Shogun was a paradigm shift for me. I had grown really tired of all the RTS games - clones of each other.. and Shogun came and almost swept me off my feet. I couldn't play another RTS game again - except the excellent Supreme Commander & Forged Alliance.

I was a very active modder on Rome: Total War. Maybe you've heard about this mod? (#1 on the list)

Hahaha that's funny and sad at the same time!

I agree.. even if I waited for 18 years, I'm still glad that the game has been delayed until the vision could actually be realized. I just wished more people would back the damn game now. Star Citizen is getting all the moolah (including much of my own).
