The Bounty Hunting & Bounties tips, and general discussion thread

Its kinda always been a thing that they killed you for loitering and has kind of defined the game in a way. At least its consistent.
It was payable before the recent update since players with millions spare in cash could kill at will and become clean at the stroke of a key. In my opinion its better the way it is, simply go to a different system until the bounty is removed before you return and pay it off. The length of time you have to leave is dependant on the crime.

Trigger control is important, as is patience to ensure your target is wanted before you open up with tons of guns. If you are wanted enemies are free to attack without becoming wanted, if you are clean check you have "report crimes against me" set to on in the side panel options and as soon as they hit you they are wanted and you can freely attack.
There is also a lot to be said for learning how to properly smuggle yourself into a hostile station and using unguarded outposts.

Im not going to say its Elite: Dangerous but rest assured you'll get a ton of those coming shortly so prepare yourself.

Sounds like you had a very bad day! As Alex said though, you do have to be vigilant before you open fire. I'm sure you will be more careful in the future. Good luck Commander :)

Good story that is pretty funny. In a month or less you will be so rich you couldn't care less about being fined, shot by police, or care about even smashing your 10 mil cr insurance ship into the station and dying on purpose, repeatedly...out of boredom.

Then you will look back at this story and realize that this is when you had fun in the game.

I wouldn't call it just fine, but it (more or less) works. Sort of. Personally, I'd love to see the low end tweaked as I feel it's too harsh, but by the same token I'd like to see the high end pushed up a lot higher as it's far too lenient.

Just got my first-ever bounty due to overzealous turrets. No. More. Turrets.

I have to skip town for about three days to pay off my 3365 Cr bounty. Annoying. Fortunately, I have things to cash in elsewhere.

A new player here, who's having some trouble with the current bounty and fine systems. I'm sure veterans know what I'm talking about, when I say this game likes to murder you for just looking at someone funny. Enjoying the game, really I am, but when I'm getting bounties for defending myself from pirates yelling "Gimme ur loot or die!" after they open fired on me, and interdicted me twice, then get a huge fine for picking up the spoils of my kill, (It was like 100k...) get shot at by the police I thought were there to "help" me... Later, forget, finally make it back to the station to drop off the mission's supplies, get scanned, shot at for my bounty, panic, try to fight back, get bigger bounty, crash, get fined again for station damage, then my cargo hatch breaks and spills out my 50 tons of cargo with a 200cc fine per cargo piece for illegal dumping and then my ship blows up... loosing the 100k from the missions, the cost of my new ship, that cargo, and all because of a stupid pirate...

I guess what I'm trying to say is, it would be nice to be able to pay off your bounties, and not get fined so harshly or shot on site for defending yourself, or a tiny mistake. Even while in a fight with the police helping them against pirates, and one shot from your lowest grade small hardpoint starter laser grazes the 4 layer deep Elite police guy's shields, and suddenly you're a shoot on sight guy, like you're the system's most wanted criminal... I mean, instant death for one stray beam in a massive firefight? I mean, come on... come on... They're not going to pay for that cargo, or my lost mission... The system could use a bit of re-working, but then again it's just a simple system in like most games, with no identifying feature. It's just the basic formula: Player committed crime, kill player. Doesn't matter if you just J-walked or killed the Emperor, you're treated the same, lol. Would like to see a more understanding police force in the future. I mean, was the guy in the space semi with one small laser really that hardened of a criminal that you had to kill him on sight? I was delivering medical supplies and stuff. ('>.>)

I agree with the other poster, you just had a bad run, it happens to all of us. I rarely get tagged for accidental shots anymore, it just gets easier to avoid eventually. I've been blown up by a station before and STILL have no idea why..

Get your backside back out there.. get some seat time..

The more I play, the more I like the new penalty system. It makes you think a lot more and consider your actions. The number one rule I have learned is you don't play in your own back yard. In other words, I never take any kill missions in whatever system I am currently calling home. That way I know I always have somewhere safe to hang my hat.
.
My only complaint is that after a fine period has expired, there is no where telling you where you need to go to pay the legacy fine, spent about 30 minutes the other night hoping around the neighbouring systems trying to find the right station to pay one off!

No kidding. If you want bangbangbang, move at least 20 light-years over, and off your usual trade routes.

so much this.. : (

You'll be a pro in no time. Don't sweat it. We all go through that. The only thing they should fix is grazing police and getting a bounty. There should be a bit of a buffer for friendly fire.

Bounty adding fines to bounty amount

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or its how the system should work.

I had fines of a few million for carrying some illegal goods.

I shot a ship I didn't scan first and became wanted. I left so not to kill the ship and looked at the right UI to see how long I would be wanted for.

It said 7 days (well 6 days 23 hours) and my bounty was for the millions my fine was.

Is this how it works? I though I would have 6 more days to pay off my fines (if I was going to) instead of them instantly becoming bounties because I got a 200cr bounty.

Yes this is how it works. Fines get added to your bounties. If you already have fines in a system and get a bounty in the same system then the fines turn into bounties.

Ah this game can be annoying to find legal\worthwhile PVP, I can understand why people just murder other players for no reason other than boredom. Anybody want to help me out?

"Where can you find some pvp bounty hunting"?

Probably in some other, better game. With terrible instancing, good luck finding the top 5 bounty targets. With combat logging, better luck catching them.

Even if you do find a non cheating player, as distance said, in this game it's mind numbingly easy to escape. If you know the proper techniques, which pirates should know since they encounter them pretty often.

If you're really a masochist, you could try the top 5 bounty targets. It only gives you their last known location, not whether they're online or not.

You can try rare trade routes, they have a fair bit of pirates on them, usually. Lave is probably the place to start, when I was there, the pirates outnumbered the traders.

Lastly you can go to some power play controlled systems, undermining generates a fair amount of bounty. However, there's a lot of systems so it's gard to know which systems have players in them. I'm sure there's also quite a few who only undermine in solo, so you won't even be able to see those players.

Thanks. I am aware of the 'usual' hotspots, ie lave, fujin, gliese 868 etc. I was hoping someone such as a trader may have noticed a particularly busy system. I know there are quite a lot of short falls in this game re bounty hunting, but I quite enjoy combat and I don't really want to hunt players who are not looking for a fight.

Someway of paying for updates on the location of a high bounty Player would be useful. Black market stations might give you better tips or perhaps allied systems might message you.
Just a thought.
