Others replying to my comment, some don't get the point ... Frontier specified it was to be kept to those in attendance, yet they knew it wouldn't. So why try to keep it secret? Is this a sneaky way of building hype, as Tinman said? Something I've been asking Frontier to do? Because if it is, then GG Frontier, you outplayed me, bravo sir![]()
I took away two things from this reply ...The difference is that people are now paraphrasing ED, and adding a lot of 'no promises' to the info. Offcourse we get the gist of it, but if something backfires (eg. no Imp Eagle for some odd reason) we cant run amok on the forums (or we can and will, but it would be silly). As such FD gets to talk a little bit more freely without having to resort to legal teams whispering vague suggestions in their ear every sentence. And when your conference includes beer and wine, you may want to be able to talk a bit more freely.![]()

As for development stuff and timescales; a couple of us were discussing this over the weekend and felt that whatever Frontier do they are damned if they give a fixed date and then miss it for any number of reasons that come up in the course of development (like any product of any complexity let alone one of the complexity of E : D) and, of course are damned if they don't give a date or statement of what's coming when and in what order...
Frankly it's nice to have some surprises and common-sense (sadly getting rarer by the day) says that most of the stuff in the DDF is 'likely' to make it into the game at some point (why else would the threads have been published) and (as hinted at over the weekend) most, if not all, of the legacy ships will end up in game at some point... It would be silly not to do this and Frontier are most definitely not silly!
Looking forward to the mission upgrades very much.

I could not have said this better myself. Repped.DB unnecessarily confused matters by stating at launch they had to leave stuff on the cutting room floor without clarifying what that meant exactly in terms of pre and post launch. Other gaffs include not politely closing the DDF but just abandoning it, and not issuing corrections to newsletter mis-speak (for instance right before Alpha ended FD pushed for more sales of Alpha access by writing that all Alpha players would have access to new releases two weeks before anyone else, and that is not true. There are backer/pre-sale rewards still outstanding that should have a regular update in a regular place (Newsletter), and the Federal Corvette was famously due in release 1.2 according to the Newsletter but there was never errata covering that flub.)
Surprises are great for new 3D models and story content. But they are just as likely to backfire as delight when they involve major changes to existing mechanics, major new grindy mechanics, and negatives for casual players like reputation decay.
FD are more "damned if they don't" try to be more clear. I agree common sense dictates FD will try to implement designs they spent a lot of time drafting and have posted publicly. But why don't they just say this? Given the "cutting room floor" comment and recent flood of forum posts about the direction of the game, not doing so is just dumb for business and will lead folks on the fence to the opposite conclusion, possibly to the detriment of word of mouth sales and reputation.
In addition to such a boilerplate statement put in every newsletter and stickied on the Forums, make the Newsletter the place that brings together all the FD comms and dev communications. Put static templated regular sections in place like Peek of the week, backer fulfillment update (still missing digital art book, ships), errata and corrections, next point release headline feature, and throw in some rotating columns from various departments like meet the team, Stellar Forge, AI, etc.
The "uplift" in mood and positive comments from lots of posters on this thread should be evidence that it is dumb for FD not to do something like this.

I have to disagree there. Ever met some random cmdr telling you to get off "his" system because you're eating "his" profits? Scale that to the entirety of Torval space. Trading high profit routes is going to feel like going to the bad part of town in the middle of a gang war, regardless of what power the routes are in. Might as well rename all government types to "Anarchy". Guilds would seal the fate of Open as the PvP combat mode.

Also, on the subjects of groups, it may surprise people to know, as the leader of The Code, I don't want much in the way of guilds in Elite. However, simple things like a tick box for allied, enemy or kill on sight would be marvellous.
