Real advertising

its just an idea but, the adverts when you go into starports are the exact same ones every time. it could be possible to have adverts for real life things, like people pay to advertise in the game, but ONLY where there are already advertisements for in-game companys and stuff, no pop-ups or anything.

Yes i know im mental for suggesting adverts in a game, but i want to support Frontier, the people who make the game, run the servers and all that.

FD have reserved the right (in the EULA) to do this, although the only example we have seen of this being done so far was with the Nvidia card competition (which i'm sure the winners didn't object to :D).

I'd be fine with in-game adverts as long as they are in-lore and not immersion breaking. Like the ones we currently have for the ship manufacturers - as long as it was abundantly clear that any money made from such was being poured back into development and not lining shareholder pockets.

For example, a KFC-like logo (paid for by KFC) but instead it says Kanagoto Fried Chukka.

No. No. Nononononono. Nooooooooooooo.

I don't want to see ads for 21st century products in a game set in the year 3301. Crap like this already killed BF2142 for me.

The funny thing they could do is advertising for real life companies like Coke or Taco Bell.

And replace some of the trade items with items linked to these companies for a limited time.

"New new Coke" and "Taco "meat" filling" (imperial slaves) are some of the thing that could be traded...

Add in some real life link... bring 100T of "meat" and receive 10% reduction on your next taco bell purchase (but who would take that offer though, seriously?!)

This in turn would raise the demand for Pepto Bismol at the station because of the "meat" quality.

Because no matter how they are fed, space weevil is not good taco material.

This. It'd be seriously immersion breaking. Likewise, I don't think satire of current products/companies would be a good idea.

That said, I would like to see more variety, but I understand that something like that would be way, way at the lower end of the priority list.

Nobody wanted it in BF2142 and I for one would not play the game if it had any real world adverts in it. I would sooner pay £20 a month to FD than have adverts in game.

I can't say this would bother me much as long as the ads themselves were in places that ads generally appear, and the style of them fit the Elite aesthetic. Having a ticker across my HUD with the latest IRL Amazon sales would be much too far for me but a Coke ad on a billboard or marked containers would seem pretty fitting, really. Maybe some company-logo Haulers in the proper livery. If it wasn't seriously blatant and pushy in terms of getting us as players to buy things, I think it'd add some character to the galaxy.

No real ads please. I am not playing a game to be advertised, brain-washing already exists in real life.
Now, on the other hand, ads related to the game universe could be nice. They could change based on shipyard availability, ship sales, controlling faction and so on. Basically the ads we already have with more variety and an actual meaning "oh they sell Diamondbacks here" :)

Next thing we'll know insurance companies like Lloyds of London, will be posting adds for insurance on the way out of stations.

I think the only advertising should be fictional ads for modules combined with subtle advertising for frontiers own store. Example : "Frontier painting services Inc. Has been providing ship painting services across the galaxy since 3255. Book an appointment today at frontierstore.net "and then have an image of a ship showcasing on the more recent paint options.

Or something like that.

No.

I get enough of that crap in RL without logging into a game and having RL corp. splattered over my monitor.

I put a lot of effort into blocking advertising and tracking on my PC and I wouldn't support/allow any game to by-pass that; some things are simply not on.

+1 for finding the one thing I can think of that would genuinely stop me playing.

How about the blank monitor in the bottom center of the ships? Do they have any use? I think we could use it to watch Galnet News in a broadcast tv style with a sexy anchor female on it.
Or some TV ads or Faction leader speechs like Simguru Antal or maybe some hacked enemy transmission like in Star Trek..

So this is the way I reckon it will work:

  • Frontier sells advertising space in-game to major 21st century companies. Everyone sees them, except...
  • Frontier sells you the ability to switch off seeing those ads so you can maintain your immersion. Sort of a reverse DLC.
They make money both ways. Except from those who join the haemorrhage of users.
