Or... update to Windows 8.1 ..... or wait until the end of the month and get Windows 10, or fully upgrade and go to Linux.
Well that solves all ED bugs then, as you can't play ED on Linux (or can you?)
Um - disabling security updates on a Windows system is never the 'sensible' thing. FWIW - I didn't loose any settings from the last update.

I've not seen any specific testing comparing 7 to 10 in terms of performance in ED but for a large number of other games with micro stuttering issues ect there has been massive improvements. Here's to hoping 10 will be the new xp!

Just a warning that the latest windows 7 updates may cause a loss of settings on your pc.
Including Elite, voice attack etc, it appears to cause a loss of licence details completely for some programs.
So make a backup just in case.

I think this might be something that is a local problem and not a problem with the update, have updated, no problems found here.
Might entirely be a totally third third program that is causing the issue.

Oh jeez, i just got 13 updates as well. Crossing fingers and time to restart!
He didn't say disable security updates, he said disable auto updates, meaning it is very sensible, smart, the right thing to do, and in your best interest to not have Windows auto update your PC.
Always disable auto updating and do it manually if/when you see the need.
Yep, I updated last night with a load of cumulative security updates and the launcher wouldn't work.
I reinstalled it and I was good - didn't lose any settings or binds.

I'm hoping it flops.. and then the world will become penguin shaped... but it won't, Directx12 will make it awesome.. <shakes fist at the sky> "darn you Gates!!!".

FWIW I just installed a load of updates (13 plus a couple of optionals IIRC), rebooted and everything with ED is fine. This is launching through Steam, mind, so I can't speak for what these updates might or might not have done to a stand-alone launcher. Just wanted to note that whatever problem the OP is seeing isn't universal.
I never mentioned anything about disabling security updates. I said disable 'Auto Updates' Unless you are in a vegetative state, applying manual updates is the sensible option, so lets agree to disagree.
