10 min Summary on CQC (and a look at the Condor) - The things Frontier have told us...

The first part is plain wrong, while the second is right. They are not "too dumb" as you put it, they are usually sold instant action games. That is why FD made a decision to make spinoff for them and present it as front for Elite core game, so the concept could look in line with games like Call of Duty, NFS, Halo & FIFA. Or did you think the terrific idea of CQC was conceived with PC in mind and as a part of a core game?

Exactly. The main game must be funded somehow. Star Citizen chose to do it by charging Earth money for starships, Elite does it by creating game modes to attract different kinds of customer. In the end what it means is that the "real" Elite gets more funding. I don't see myself playing CQC - I hated Descent and this looks pretty similar, but if it means the parts of Elite that I do like get written then so much the better.

What this guy saidx1000.

And yeah, there was a period where we didn't hear anything from Frontier aside from the dev updates and newsletters, but these past couple of weeks have seen absolutely TONS of interaction from devs. I'm actually very surprised at how much interaction we've gotten, between responses to the threads in this discussion forum, to these new 'we'd like your suggestions on this' to little sort of "who's this dev?" mini bios.

So far we've had the primary release of the game, then several 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 updates that all were pretty major in their own way as far as feature expansion and adjustments, but we haven't yet gotten a massive game changing update yet, like "2.0" would presumably be. We are only 7 months out from the release of the game and development is nowhere near finished, and no dev has ever said that it was finished.

dev comunication always rises when they made an important milestone and crunchtime is over for some days untill the next milestone has to be reached ;)

so yes thats promising ^^

CQC is a fast track to getting some income. FDev need that income right now, so this is a short-term priority. Fair enough. The good things will come mid to longer term. I'm sure this time next year the game will be in a good place and that strong income avenues will have been established. Win-win for all.

I watched the first few minutes of the highlights video thinking this could be some fun!

Then he mentioned the power ups... oh dear... Stop the video and wait for the next add-on game which may well involve running and jumping on platforms to rescue a Princess who has been kidnapped again while collecting CR's but set on different stations just to keep it feeling like the base game.

Thanks but no thanks.

I've been enjoying ED quite a bit more lately, so that's good. However, I have no interest in Powerplay and definitely not in CQC, so that's not so good -- two additions in a row that aren't what I'm after. Hopefully whatever's after this will be more my cup of tea.

CQC is not my thing either and most likely I will never participate. I would not miss it if it wasn't there, but I believe it might be good for the game in general. I have to say though that CQC has nothing to do whatsoever with the Elite universe. It is a very gamey addition and I am glad it is a separate module.

Even though I stopped my personal involvement with Powerplay I still think it is an important addition to the ED universe.
The political layer it adds to the universe is needed. PP does need some tweaks, refinements and improvements, but I am confident it will be developed further.

Same here. I saw that and thought, "Oh dear". Did he find the magic diamond in the hidden castle, too?

woot? Actually i think the powerups and tunnels and interactable doors are what makes cqc quite unique and challenging and the fights much more fun and tactical.

Same here, COMBAT, COMBAT, COMBAT. Is that all ED can offer no adventure.

From what i have seen you can keep this arcady xbone junk,This is what happens when you deal with Satan(MS)They make you put stuff in for kids,Why would anybody get upset Because this is Xbone first,I hope console players dont think this how the main game will be or they will be in for a rude awakening. If CQC is true reprsentation how most console games are then i fear ED is aiming its self at the wrong market Not optimistic about this at all

Jees, you're a barrel of laughs! Lots of PC people wanted a PvP mode away from the main game, so you're entirely wrong to paint this as some XBox kiddies game forced on people by MS.

Nice post and thank you for your time Granite.

It is clear to understand why this is a separate mode, it would be great to see this incorporated into the main game on PC/Mac. If there were identical CQC areas dotted around the Galaxy (to save on travelling huge distances mainly). You know.....immersion and all that.

I thought it looked great and there are clearly elements that can be ported into the main game. More station assets, corridors to fly through. Doors. Graphics you can fly through. Destructable elements.

As much as I'm a fan of ObsidianAnt's, the CQC looks spectacularly silly. Inconsequential, disconnected bolt-ons are apparently the way this game is going to live on (think 'life support') which makes me regret the decision to call it quits even less.

why this obsession to link an extra game to the main game? its seperated, play it or not but to connect this to your decision not to play the main game anymore is just plain silly.

I'll have to wait and see how it works but I'm a little concerned about the lack of gimbals. This could in effect give a huge advantage to players who are using a HOTAS.

Because well integrated parts create synergy and thus pitch sales, while making spin offs delays the development progress of initially planned features. To be fair spin offs pitch sales too, but in inorganic way - think of hardcore driving game, where developers sink months of time and effort to create a casino mini-game (test drive unlimited 2 would be an example). If a racing sim gamer wants to play poker he will play pokerstars. He bought the game to drive and enjoy content related to and centred around driving. Lack of any published plans & prioritisation doesn't add to optimism of the part of the crowd. Just an example, perhaps not a perfect one to convey the idea behind frustrations. Elite shines in it's complexity, or is supposed to, at least. Synergy between BGS, power play, gunplay, thought out missions, etc .. add value to the core product. Separating CQC doesn't add too much value there.

So, in the end, both options bring money - the former does it through DLC sales and enriches the core game, yet the latter is just an unnecessary diversion from proclaimed vision. In the eyes of a part of Elite fans anyway. Including myself.

I think it looks amazing, and as a Descent: Underground Kickstarter who's a year away from getting that to play probably, this looks like Descent gameplay in Elite-O-Verse, which is neat. Plenty of people on here have mentioned that the combat style in Elite is somewhat limited by the lack of cover/objects to fight around, so this could be a lot of fun. The Condor looks amazing up close too. I'll be interesting to see how they balance the ship types.

From a gamer's perspective, the Xbox and PC versions are absolutely identical, and after a month or so it looks as though around 10-20,000 people are playing the Xbox version, which is impressive for the almost unheard of "console paid-for pre-release" style of game that it is. I'm playing the two equally now (differently, as I'm still at the build-up-my-Cobra stage on the Xbox one, and more immersed in PP on the PC. PP is borked on the Xbox One. Boo.), but the introduction of CQC on both platforms is a total unknown for everyone right now. After all, we have to be out of the real game to play it, so I don't really see what the core appeal of it is. But let's see how they integrate it into the system first. If we have to "Save&Quit" and move to CQC as a separate startup option I'll be downright disappointed. The opportunity to make it more "in the game" is there, but doing that without tagging it on will be a design challenge.
