Gross speculation from this weeks newsletter......

Thing is, how much work or dev time would it take to change Pluto, if it's not a big deal, but they still want to wait, then maybe Planet landings are not far off. (dare i say gamescon)
But if it is a big deal and requires lots of time and effort. Then maybe it is a long wait.

They *want* to land on them someday, not they are *going* to land on them someday, and no one is saying *someday* is a day in this century. But perhaps Soon(™). :)

The game's been out of beta, what, seven months? I imagine that kind of design work takes alot of time. I think it's worth waiting a while. They've never given any indication it wasn't on the list and it's been mentioned fairly frequently.

After re reading the devs answer thread, i don't think landings are in any near future plans, as walking around ships has been ruled out. And i think that would come first.

"When will we be able to walk on our ships?

We have nothing to announce on this one, now or at Gamescom. Walking around on ships is in our plans, for sure, but it’s a very long way off."

Well so far it seems to be its coming, or not....expressed in the same posts...

Personally I think it's coming. It'll be announced at Gamescon...

If you examine the Galnet text in the latest newsletter and take the equidistant letter sequence from a lexical arrangement of an offset square root parallelogram pattern, and then after some algorithmic processing minimising the interpolation from the remainder data, you will immediately see that there is a very clear message hidden in the text.
I have decoded it for you.
That message reads as follows:

THE THARGOIDS ARE COMING AND YOU ARE FIRST ON THEIR LIST.

Not sure that precludes planetary landings, or planetary flight. You might not be able to get out of the ship, but you might be able to land on a facility that is planetside.

Personally and speculatively, I think the Gamescon announcement is going to be that "rest of the pie" we used to get all worked up about during Gamma.

I can't hype up anymore; too many derailments of that train. I will be excited at the appropriate levels when whatever mystery thing it is has been actually announced.

I don't disagree about the timescale. Indeed, I'd be very surprised if the Gamecon announcement is about planetary landings, except on airless rocks, as it is way to soon after release (and you could argue that it's still in beta :) ). They have said in one of the newsletters previously that expansions would occur *if* the game was successful, not regardless of all factors. Plus, the whole 'yeah there'll be single player offline... oh whoops... we can't do it thing'. I'm with AnnuverScotInExile on this. Seeing is believing.

Funnily enough, I am more confident of seeing this in the short to medium term than I am things like 'proper' exploration. We know that FD have been chasing the money, and planetary landings would get some wow back into the market, attract players to the base game, and generate a pile of folding green things from some, at least, of the existing player base. Exploration, much that I want it, is not the sort of thing I would expect them to do a rah-rah announcement about at a big convention.

Besides which, I have not forgotten that they have a separate team working on expansions, even if others on these speculation threads have forgotten. So the fact that other stuff is under way is pretty irrelevant. I would not be at all surprised if the announcement was a sneak peek at bits of the first phase (FD have said this will not all come in one big bang) of planetary landings. I WOULD be surprised if they announced it as being ready, in the way they did with the XBox at E3. I think that Planetary landings and the PS4 version are quite likely to be available just before Christmas. Yes, this year.

But, on the other hand, I also would not be surprised if they announced something totally unexpected from left field, as powerplay was.

Newsletter hold no information anymore, i quit reading them and im probably going to report it as spam. Everything they bring up in the news has been discussed in the forums days/weeks earlier to the "update".

I reckon it'll either be passenger cabins and associated missions or something from the DDF. Maybe dark systems and the special scanner you'd need to find them.

Despite the fact that this game has only been released to the public for 7 months, had several small 0.1 0.2 0.3 updates, despite the fact that the devs have reassured us about planetary landings and other expansions numerous times, people still gotta be like ," psht yeah planetary landing will never happen cuz the devs lied about offline mode."
