Sarah, it may be time to tone it down a bit.

To answer the question, yes I am gonna tone it down a bit. :) But just the low ranks. ;) The high ranks (hopefully) are gonna kick your... ;)
The difference between low and high... is that a graduated spectrum or as a specific threshold?
Where would the center of that spectrum or the threshold be, relative to current combat ranks?
Or would it not be combat rank but rather according your highest rank in all three - combat, trading, exploring - as I saw one dev write recently?

I've not been hard pressed yet in any battles although it's been a while since I logged in, but I did so after the last update. The AI did behave differently, but not so much as to make any real difference. I would like to see a system where the level of any ranked npc is also based on the area they are in, by which I mean a Harmless npc in the core may be easier than a Harmless npc out on the fringe of the core - a more cocksure character, with the skills to match..Or something along those lines. Would mean that you are never quite sure what they are like.

Are you responsible for AI outside of combat? I proposed suggestions to behaviour of NPCs a while back. The gist is basically that they drop out of character in certain situations, and just "stand there". Wondered if tweaking that sort of thing is on the company's radar.

I just had an NPC give me the "Big haul like that, surprised you made it this far." just as I was about to drop out of SC at the station. The NPC followed me and taunted although didn't attack immediately. I docked, sold cargo, refuelled, bought cargo and left the station - only to be attacked by the lurking NPC! Sadly for him the station vapourised his ship because he attacked me in the NFZ....

Loving the changes, SJA!!

NPC's have taken out my shield generator three times in the last 2 days, great fun I actually had to run away and reboot. They'll be rolling down the window and making rude gestures next.

the Ai just loves teaming up on you and just you.

^^This..

I dont know how many times I have been fighting pirates in a RES along with the Defense force, and you get a small 300cr Fine because the NPC you are trying to save from said Pirates (all of which have a much bigger bounty than 300cr) gets in the crossfire and ALL of them stop fighting the pirate(s) and all solely focus on me.

I wish that would get fixed... They should not see you as an Anaconda Pirate Lord style threat over 300cr... EVER.....

Still taking out anacondas and pythons with ease in cz. Only when you get isolated can it get hairy. Crank it up sj.

Maybe it's a stroke of genius.

In real life we always complain the cops will be vigilant with issuing parking or speeding tickets but they're not going after the real bad guys. This behaviour is now mimicked in Elite. Oh blimey, Sarah's NPCs are starting to pass the Turing test. The thread premise is valid.

For the sake of humanity, Sarah, please tone down the AI otherwise we're going to have to rely on Arnold Schwarzenegger to bail us out. And he can't even run California!

I remember when I was playing Halo on Legendary, there were a few times I was cursing the game for being too hard. But then I realized that my sense of accomplishment was tied to the difficulty of the game. The harder it was for me to win a fight, the more wildly and enthusiastically I danced when I won it.

That's why I stopped playing World of Warcraft pretty quickly. Basic questing... Meh, once you were geared up enough it was not challenging. Those of you who've done it know what I'm talking about: soloing multi-character dungeons and bosses when you're 2 levels below the recommended minimum.

Bring on the hard. I will meet you and defeat you.

I hope I'm not the first person to break this news to you, but....

At least half of the 'people' on the forum are SJA's AI-powered 'bots. They're amazingly good (although she's got the "complain" parameter a bit high in some of them, it's not realistic) ...

That would explain the high quality of this forum, in relation to other game forums.

Don't tell me whether you're one of them. I like to be kept guessing.

Surly: I may have *started* this meme. But, rep for you anyway.

This would never apply to gamers:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_distribution

Or, this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_deviation

All true combat players are in the third standard deviation above normal, or better. Really. They are even modest about it. :)

I'm three standard deviations below midpoint. Minimum.

Hmm, I don't know about that - with my mostly A-Class Vulture I'm tearing through several Pythons and Anacondas until some other NPC Ship cracks my shield which is usually the time to get out of a combat zone. By then I usually leave with a combat voucher of around 300.000 so for me it's kind of easy money. Still having a hard time finding a real challenge - the only time I have no chance is when I'm heavily outnumbered like when I have to fight against something like a dangerous or elite ranked Anaconda + 2 Asps on my own - but I think that at least is how it should be.
The only thing which isn't A-Class, yet are my Thrusters but I'd have to drop my shield booster - otherwise I wouldn't have enough energy for the whole shabang. I'm really interested if I can just completely outmanouver Anacondas and Pythons with fully upgraded thrusters.

Had an interesting experience this morning. Whilst joining in the destruction of a pirate, the NPC who was sharing the kill dived over the top of me and into my line of fire. I stopped shooting almost instantly but clipped him with the laser. His response was along the lines of "watch where you're shooting I haven't got time to deal with you today". He didn't go hostile and after we'd completed the destruction of the pirate there was no further reaction to my indescretion. Does this mean that NPC's are now intelligent enough to spot an accident? And are the Fed's also going to take a similar view of a 'heat of combat' accident?

Elite, dangerous, and deadly npc's should be just that ... deadly. Not something you farm, but a fight for your life.

Please don't tone down the AI.
