Do you really want to wander around a base station?

No I don't. I don't see the point of walking around and I think those people who want it badly will soon become bored with it and never leave their ship, once the novelty has worn off, you'll never do it again. I really wouldn't waste time developing it myself. concentrate on giving us good stuff, planetary landings, things to find in space, wrecks to salvage, decent BBS with people, fake cop black markets, better variety of station (c'mon Frontier theres like 6 different stations? Frontier has dozens of different ones, come on guys mix it up a bit), better missions, mb4 mining machines, Thargoids etc etc

I'm with this guy, while it might be 'cool' for a moment, I'd rather things that enhance gameplay. Boarding a ship would be an enhancement of gameplay, as would NPC co pilots and NPC wing members and the like. Not a lot to gain from boarding a station at the moment.

Only if it's meaningful. Remember X:Rebirth.

Please...please don't mention that game, lets all just pretend it never happened.

:p But anyways, I'm really looking forward to standing underneath my ship to really get a sense of scale for it, aside from the debug camera it's really hard to appreciate how large the ships are.

Uhm, correct me if I'm wrong but from Frontier I remember... 3 types of orbital station and 2 types of ground station depending on whether the planet had a breathable atmosphere or not.

The lack of variety sort of makes sense if you ask me as well, as the vast majority of these structures are probabkly going to be prefabs I'd say.

We need more in space content not walking around your ship. Things like ongoing wars where we need to supply outposts that are 1000ly outside the bubble to fuel the war effort. That combined with having to fight at the front line to keep the enemy at bay. combine this with progressive missions that actually have a story line and maybe we can re spark the light that is going out for some palyers.

I loathe the idea of resources being wasted on an Elite:FPS so intensely that the scale has not yet been invented that could measure the depths of my abhorrence.

Um, so... no, I don't really want to wander around.

Never wanted to walk on space station...

but on my own ship and on spaceports/nice spots once planet landing gets in

Much as I would love rescue/salvage/recon missions with such in-depth (in station/ship) gameplay, I can only think that trying to include this level of alternate gameplay could be counter-productive (in dev-effort vs gameplay-reward) and even (kinda) be missing the 'point' of Elite - e.g. turning the space-flight component into just a taxi-ride to the next portion of FPS.

The problem for me is that the FPS-portion would need to take some time, and need some complexity, to feel meaningful and rewarding, and the more time spent in FPS mode would make the flying portion feel 'less important'.

Elite for me is about being a pilot strapped into a ship. Once it becomes an 'FPS' I'm likely going to feel it has become a bit diluted. A happy middle-ground might be to have video-calls with 'talking heads' - that way you can have intercom chats with passengers as easily as with station-side 'brokers'.

All that said, I would lurve such rescue/salvage/recon missions... I'm thinking of System Shock (1 and 2)... perhpas FDev migh want to help me out with #3... pretty please...

:D

Looks like a station is about 5km long. So maybe each time you go from the station bar to your ship, you have to run/jump/navigate 2km of corridors. They could have a mini-game sort of like "frogger" where you have to avoid the station traffic. And a mode like Metal Gear Solid where, if you're wanted, you have to dodge the cops by hiding in boxes or going into air vents. And another mini-game where you drive a forklift unloading all those tons of materials. Could be very exciting.

Could be like ME, you get quests and certain shops on space-stations. I'm not sure I would like to play an fps with a character that moves like a spaceship.. :) .
At the moment however, I would like to see more variation and "character" with current quests. First get the basic stuff right, then dress it up, otherwise everyone is going to be dissappointed.
As for walking around on your ship... , looking back at ME again, it wasn't walking around the spaceship that I loved best about that game.

At least it would mean that 'they' would have to add things to walk to.

i don't care about "walking" but i do think stations need additional elements (and screens!) - bars/casinos for example.

Yes I want all the things !

I don't think it really matters what any of us thinks, If FD gave me a choice, then there might be something to consider. Would getting out of my ship be fun? Yeah maybe, would it be better than other things? I don't know, it would make the game richer, but so would many other things. Just have to let FD get on with whatever they are adding, and hope each increment in development improves the game.

I can maybe see some kind of walking around station and planet, but doubt FPS when flying ship is likely. Walking is as far as I know additional paid content if it ever happens, so would probably be in a separate 'instance' to your normal game so likely only available when you are docked anyway. The other issue I can't see how you would get around for FPS gameplay is how you would deal with the controls. Would you have to use KB and mouse/gamepad for walking sections, because HOTAS would not be remotely usable in any kind of fast paced moving environment in comparison.
