Imperial Eagle - Will it count as a ship?

So newsletter #84 is out and we got a picture of the Imperial Eagle. While it looks nice, it also does in my opinion look like an Eagle bootleg, with a Courier's hardpoint slots at the end of each wing. We also know it will remain very similar to its brother. Considering this similarity, will the Imperial Eagle be a little bonus ship or will it count as a new ship among the 30 ships?

I think I remember hearing DB intimate that there will be more than the originally 30 ships promised. I think it was during E3.

Either way, just as the two diamondback variants count as two, I'd think this Eagle variant counts as one and the jump incapable condor will count as one, too.

I will be surprised if it doesn't count as a new ship.

You're right. The Eagle is small enough to fit in the cargo hold of an Anaconda. So, as my grandpa used to say, "You can tell that's a boat because they put it on a ship."

That is actually the technical definition of a boat according to the USCG -

A boat is a fixed hulled vessel whose entire displacement is currently being handled by another vessel. The ship is tbe vessel handling the displacement.

The Imperial Eagle is a ship.

Not sure why anyone would there is some arbitrary limit on number of ships in the game though. They can add as many or as few ships as they like.

I present a very large boat:

It looks nice but i really want to see more classic ships added first. Won't truely feel like Elite until i see all those old familiar named ships!

The US Coastguard are wrong :p

The traditional definition of a ship is one of two things:-

a) It has three or more masts or

b) It can cross the ocean.

The exception is a submarine. Those are always boats, but that might be because they go under the water not over it.

So since the Eagle has a hyperdrive and is durable enough to be capable of flying across the galaxy it's a ship. A condor, since it lacks a hyperdrive would be a boat.

The Eagle MK III, which the Imperial Eagle is based on, IS a classical Elite ship. It appeared in Elite II: Frontier and in Frontier: First Encounters. Those are both very old game classics.

The imperial eagle looks pretty great in the screenies we've seen so far. I was kind of burned by the DBS stats though, so I am waiting cautiously before I get too excited this time around. Also, it seems like more of a CQC ship with 2 small and 1 medium hardpoint. Hardly a "war" ship. It might resurrect the Eagle as a viable ship in Open if it's fast enough to escape the bigger ships like FDL or the Clipper. Not sure what you'd try to shoot at that could be harmed? Maybe a DBS? Lol.

Looking forward to the Federal Counterpart... or maybe the Alliance will finally get their own ship?

The Federal Counterpart is the inferior and outdated Eagle MK II which is currently thrown on the open market for public purchase.

Well that would make sense. Imperials get the best stuff don't they? But FD does seem to release ships in pairs these days, so I am wondering if there is a another ship in the wings, what would it be?

Just because they surprised us with the Diamondback Explorer does not mean they will always release ships in pairs.

Would make sense to give the Federals their Corvette, though... that they promised for... I don't even remember it was so long ago... was it update 1.2?

You do know that ship on the dry dock ship was the USS Cole.

God rest the souls of those navy persons whom lost their lives. So you could make a silly point.

Maybe a better picture could of been used instead.

The DBS is pretty awesome.

The medium hardpoint and better speed will make it a lot more viable in combat than the Mk II, but I wouldn't expect it to be able to outrun a Clipper.

Federal Corvette?

Everyone that wanted a ship between the Eagle and the Imperial Courier rejoice! Everyone, all five of them!

People barely fly the existing eagle, why do we need a second one? Might as well include an imperial sidewinder while you're at it. Or maybe an Alliance hauler...

The only ships flown more than the Eagle are the Sidewinder, Cobra, Viper, Vulture, and Asp and that's with the Eagle's wonderful combination of slow, weak, and fragile.

This new Eagle will probably fix most of the slow, and half of the weak...which means it could easily be a very popular ship, if priced correctly. It could be the new Viper for people that don't like the Viper's slow pitch rate or who can't figure out how to leverage the Viper's thrusters...weaker and more fragile, but probably similar speed and more agility. The Viper, even now, is a very solid ship, and a faster Eagle that can mount an actual gun could be a lot of fun, as well as useful enough for people to want to use it.
