The quality of ED's future

Michael already clarified core gameplay will be extended as required. So no worries. They have always stated having teams on both core gameplay and expansions.

No - some development will apply to all versions of the game and so will be available to all owners. This will typically apply to features that apply to everyone in game. Other features and content will be for Elite Dangerous: Horizons owners only.

I am quite taken aback by this thread, you are entitled to your opinions... but naysayer much?

I played CQC on the Xbox last night, it was GREAT fun.......... ok its more of a side game, but its fun...

The Srv looked amazing in that video......... is this the love that Mining has been waiting for...

I worry that the very thing you are waiting for may pass you by, but lets give it a chance to come out before assassinating the game or the developers off the cuff.

But the one sure way to help is to play, feedback and help Frontier make the game better, rather than shooting things down before they're even out..

My CQC feedback is a little mixed, but it is more to do with the xbox controller and my inability to adapt fully to the controls

Horizons announced, well, surely and exciting thing.
My excitement however is a bit lacking because I'm not convinced about whether this is a step forward to something or away from something else.

ED is still a shallow, contentless framework with non-functioning placeholders. It's over 8 months after release and fundamental issues has not been sorted out to make ED up to a good standard or at least to match the quality of years old games in the same genre or with the same features. There's a lot of work to be done on this area and not much have been done since release (since Betas to be honest).
The 1.x series brought a few again unfinished, unorganic additions which did not address any of the fundamental issues repeatedly reported on the forums - ED can be "more" but it can not be "higher quality" this way.

Now it's another move towards planetary landings and I do understand the excitement but have some concerns overall:
- will Horizons be another half-baked, content-empty addition released as buggy as the previous patches regardless of the beta feedbacks?
- will the default ED have now even less resources to be able to bring the quality a lot of players expect and desire?
- will FD's financial model produce further examples of rushed, overly hyped but not properly done features for even more money? Is this the 10-years plan?

I'm not sure if I'm waiting for Horizons or a sound ED before that.

Well (I think it's all) happening; but your right, there are the negative people and the positive people...

I don't understand the planetary landings excitement either. The comparison the mass effect is an odd one as the thing people disliked most in mass effect wad driving around on the planet. In frontier and FFE they were pretty pointless too. I'm basically playing ED as if it were 1984 elite with prettier graphics more weapon/ship choice and better exploration. I'll give cqc and landings a go but like wings I'll probably not touch them again. More interesting missions is the main thing I'm after
So I'm very happy and if this makes other people happy then cool (premium beta backer so I get all this free anyway).

I see your point and I respect it. But that's not how I personaly feel. As I picture the thing, I'll be in my ship like today, scanning planets in an unknown solar system, and then I'll be able to do something I cannot today : go down and explore.

So YES , all the things missing today are still missing, but there is something more to do, something more to see, and this is definitely depth to me, and a LOT of depth even (well, hopefully).
So this is a HUGE step in the right direction, as long as you consider Horizons more like an E : D part and not a separate entity.

Your right Delazure, this is content. And as long as this feels connected in our play; (seamless?), its great.

Well, there ya go; different strokes for different folks -I loved going down on planets in Mass Effect, (and) I found others did too...

I did too but your the first person I've heard who did as well! I just don't think it works for me in ED - I want to be in a spaceship against the universe.

I agree. It is definitely a good thing that the planetary landing is proceeding and that there is something concrete .
But the game is half broken and must be fixed.
Otherwise we will have empty planets to explore with nothing to do and no one to meet .

C'mon, don't rain on our parade : it's not like they sold an empty half baked product at premium price before ... Errrrr wait ...
No seriously, I *WANT* to believe.

It's not what i am waiting for either, but let's be fair here. The horizon announcement doesn't automatically spell the end for further ED core game development.
PL is very much what many people have been waiting for, so i understand the move.
The rest of us, those who feel ED is still severely lacking ( me included ), will continue to do what we've done so far....watching and waiting , with our wallets closed.

I'm really on the fence with this.
When I look inside I feel the same sort of excitement about planetary landings like I felt when I saw ED on Kickstarter. However this excitement is much weaker because of the experience of the past 2.5 years of development.
ED was the first (and I can promise that also the last) game in my 25+ years gaming experience which I paid for before release and taking into account how FD carries out the development so far, my wallet is definitely closed for Horizon.

FD behaves like a child: "Dad, I want to do this and that and I want to do it now and you'll like it just give me this and that!" Then some times later the kid leaves a half done something in the middle of the room and a big mess around what he promises to clean up but doesn't do that. Instead again "Dad, I have another idea, it's even better, you don't have to agree but trust me and provide further!" And creates another torso, then another. Nothing is complete, nothing is really ready, the mess around to clean up is even bigger while the kid runs around in the street telling all mates about what he's doing and how great that is trying to convince them that it'll be great. Once it's ready of course.

My dad said to me when I tried this only once in my life: "Son, finish what you've started, clean up after yourself, we'll cheer together at the end and you'll feel you've done something. Then if you still have something else in mind, I'll support that as well."
So my wallet stays close for Horizon.
I either will buy it after it's released and I see the reviews satisfactory or just watch 5-10 minutes of YT vids about it and had all the experience it can offer. We'll see.

What exactly in list form please do you believe needs changing before the game is up to your standard?

I'll take a crack at this one.

1. A functional background simulation, including;
  • A working economy, where values of goods are determined by events in the system, i.e., a plague system offering profits on medicines, or systems at war paying a premium for weapons. Supply and demand, driving trade.
  • Supporting a system faction to cause it to take over stations and ultimately change the allegiance of a system, i.e flipping a system from independent to Alliance, Federation or Empire for example. Currently broken.
  • Missions generated by background simulation based on factors in system, sorta works when the BGS works but often does not.
  • Almost complete lack of tie-in between newly introduced PowerPlay and the background simulation. PowerPlay is essentially a separate game experience from Elite Dangerous, complete with its own list of newly introduced problems.

2. Instancing issues;
  • Consistent problems joining wings, some people seeing enemy ships, others don't, etc.
  • Comms issues - can't chat with people in the same instance.
  • Connectivity problems

3. Broken mission system, including;
  • Alternate missions that don't work properly/offer no reward
  • No branching missions
  • Important military promotion missions that require a pilot to deliver 4 tons of grain to a neighboring spaceport
  • Garbled mission text with placeholders; deliver goods to $systemXYZ
  • "Meet me at a specific port" missions where no one was waiting for you upon arrival. Fixed apparently by removing them from the game altogether in a previous update.
  • "New" mission system introduced pilot level requirements; you need to be rated "X" to fly this mission has resulted in missions requiring "Elite" ranking to haul 4 tons of biowaste.
  • No cooperative "party" missions.

4. Missing content
  • Only 20 ships available of the 30 promised at launch
  • Permit systems still have no reason for existing
  • No benefit/reason to rank up in Imperial/Federal navy other than titles
  • Unknown artifact mystery introduced and dropped
  • Unique objects/phenomena for explorers to discover not implemented
  • Thargoids, a key piece of Elite lore absent.

5. Cheating/Griefing/bugs - combat logging, hacks, exploits and other issues present since release.
  • Too many to list, just look through the forums.

This is all just off the top of my head. The game in its current state is not finished. I'm a huge fan of Elite going back to the original game. Ever since the Beta I've been preaching patience and "give them time, they're going to fix these things." But after every release since launch, it's gotten harder and harder to keep up the faith. The release of PowerPlay was an indicator that development efforts were shifting from fixing the core game. The announcement of CQC and the XBox version make it more obvious. Now, Frontier is moving onto the paid expansions begging the question of who is going to fix the current problems when someone is going to have to fix the new problems inevitably introduced by the new mechanics?

If the above issues had been addressed over time, I'd have no problem pre-ordering Horizons or even getting the lifetime pass. But so far the track record just doesn't warrant it. I've already stopped playing ED and basically haunt the forums looking for some sign that the game I paid for is going to be finished. I'll give 1.4 and 1.5 a shot and honestly hope it will pull me back into the game... but until then I'm not buying another product with Elite in the name.

Same mixed feelings/misgivings here.
There is such a whole load of unfinished/broken business left in the vanilla game and then FD introduced PP.
PP broke even more stuff and is an unfinished, lacklustre addon atm.
What hopes should I have to fare any better with Horizons?
Currently, I have none.
I'll just wait and see, take a close look at some E: D streams and forum discussions, then I may buy, but I sincerely doubt it.

Hi All,

I am quite positive abut Horizons, and the core game has kept me hooked for 8 months already and will keep me going until Horizons. My primary character has the pass, so I do not need to buy the expansion. I will wait until I get home and either by the expansion pass or just Horizons for my second character.

The core game will continued to be worked on. Buy the expansion or not. FD clearly have a 10 year plan, x players income average £50 a year. They will adjust price and content to meet this, that is how business works.

Cheers

Simon

Well I'm quite pleased and impressed, I bought in to the expansions with PB so I got the full deal; and the game is not everything I wanted (and) there's still work to be done. But I see progress, and more progress.

Except for a few moments on World of Warships, ED is the only game I'm playing. At thats 1 year on.

So there is enough content in the game as of now to keep me happy.

And I've not even played PP yet.

Thats my report.

I'm excited about PL, it was important part of FFE and will really add to the depth and immersion. But at the same time I also want to see FD focus on fixing the numerous issues and expanding upon the mechanics of the core game. I hope they can do both, but only time will tell.

The fence is actually a nice spot to be on, medwyn. I've been there for quite a while and gotten rather comfortable. ;)

what annoys me most is the fact that on the live feed they supposedly were going to answer questions put up by us and i have to say they did not even bother just it was a pr hype over an expansion that may or may not work and is over priced and not a lot about fixing the game, i wish they would just be honest with us and tell us that they are fixing the game i paid for in beta and not for paid expansions .
