Is 43 dollars a year too much for a continuously developed AAA game?

I'm a Premium beta backer, but still went to the store today and paid for the LEP as I thought I had already gotten more than my money's worth from my initial purchase.

Besides, now I'm guaranteed to be able to complain about FD's failures and disappointments for many more years to come.

Calling this a AAA game is a serious stretch. Something like Skyrim, GTA, Batman, or Assassins Creed are AAA games. Stuff which, whether you like them or not, are chock full of content right out of the box.Elite is, at best, a work in progress that shows promise.

Secondly it isn't so much what they've done here but how they've done it. Playing things too close to their chests, and then on reveal day putting out a timed discount for preorders for those who have supported them, smacks of being exploitative. What should have been an exciting day for fans of the game has left many with the feeling that Frontier has slapped them in the face due to Frontiers absolutely terrible marketing and communication strategy.

The current cost is perfectly fine for Horizons...especially when you look at RSI's joke (Star Citizen) which is a glorified tech demo which you can pay upwards of FIFTEEN THOUSAND dollars just to have all the ships available to you.

Star Citizen will allow you to play all content as long as you make an initial purchase. I don't know if that game will ever make it to release, it seems to be in development hell right now, but if it does then I really wouldn't be so dismissive of it. Today has shown a pretty big flaw with Frontiers business model when you look at what RSI is doing.

No of course it isn't!

At 43 dollars / year I'll be happy to keep paying for cool new stuff.

Good or on ya FD.

if these people don't like your game, no one is putting a gun to their heads and making them support it.

Not even close to be too much IMO.

How much time have you spent on a Batman forum today?

Argument relevancy ain't your thing is it?

Triple A titles are not decided by how much time an internet user called "FuzzySpider" spends on their forums, I don't think so anyway. You might want to post what evidence you have to support this argument then I will reconsider my position.

Definitely not. This game is a steal. I picked up the priview for $30, the expansion will run about $40-$45 from what I understand. So that's $75.

Compared to a game like destiny
$60 game at release,
$30 season pass
$40 year two expansion

$130 dollars. That almost double the price. This game is a steal.

What argument? I just wondered

I agree with OP: 43$ a year for a game like ED is not too much asking. The problem once again comes from how FD puts things and try to sell them. We are not sold this game on a subscription base but as a game and a stand alone expansion. And those who paid full price for the original are no expected to pay almost full price for a standalone, while new comers who did not offer their money earlier just have to pay for said expansion.
The way things have been presented can make some players legitimately disappointed. Now the way you put it is way better :)

ED isn't a AAA game. Its barely an A if not a flat B. Why in gods name would I buy an expansion for a game I bought overpriced and don't play?
LOL Good Luck, FD.

Or why would you come on that forum to discuss the price of an expansion which you did not intend to get anyway because you deem the original game overpriced and don't play it? Is there a point or what?

I agree. Already ordered my Beta Pack, and a couple paint schemes as well. Looking forward to it.

I played Star Wars Galaxies from the day it launched to the day it closed. Bought all the expansions between that time, I think it was 4 or 5 of them, AND paid a monthly subscription of $15 on top of it. This is cheap compared to that! So kudos and more power to Frontier... they are business making a product people want and selling it as such. Most times when a new expansion comes out for a game the original drops in price. Not unusual at all. if anybody should be upset it is me... I just bought ED a couple weeks ago, and if I waited like month like I planned on doing originally, I could have gotten the best of both worlds for less... but hey, I am not complaining. I love the game, have been having a great time, and look forward to more content and will gladly pay for it. I knew future content was coming, and knew it would have to paid for as I read about it on the Kickstarter way back when... no worries. Pay and play, it's all good.

Given the amount and quality of content

What evidence (not promises) do we have for the amount of content in horizons? We have a video of a mako driving on a barren moon. Ok - have that in another game.

Should we look at Powerplay as a metric of how much content to expect? Or Maybe 1.1 or 1.2? Honestly, if that's the amount of content they're selling here for $60, I might have to pass. Maybe it'll have more content then 1.1+1.2+1.3 - but we currently have no evidence or metrics to evaluate that.

Holiday Season 2015 has a lot of good games coming out at the $60 price point - Fallout 4, Xcom 2, No Man's Sky to name a few. I expect there to be no less content in horizons at that price point. And honestly - the $200 expansion pass seems like a starcitizen-esque money grab, which fills me with concern. That's a lot of money to charge for promises.

You buy a game and shock the game gets cheaper to buy after it has been out for awhile. They release an expansion and if you own the game you can buy the expansion for a price and if you don't you can buy the game and expansion. Now the game and expansion are more expensive then the expansion alone. Makes sense. The game and expansion bundled together is cheaper then if you bought the game previously and bought the expansion only. That also is marketing. You want to sell the game, so you bundle it at a discount. Happens all the time. I don't see it as anything sinister but a way to sell more copies of the game so they can continue to support it. I know some don't like it, but name one game that didn't get cheaper over time? I doubt you can.

I think the issue is not so much cost, but comparison and FD's total inability to communicate*.

Taking the LEP out of the equation for the moment, you have exactly the same furore here that Anet had with GW2. Current players were not happy because the expansion (Heart of Thorns) cost the same across the board but as a new player you got the base game included; you got more bang for your buck. I can see the business sense in what Anet and FD are doing, but they've screwed up by not giving existing players something 'special'; and from reading the Forums, a tenner off just isn't doing the job.

There needed to be that 'little something' for current players to make the comparison between a current player's 'expac' and a new players 'package' more favourable, e.g the introduction of an extra character slot that was free-of-charge to current players; something like that would have given current players a sense of cash-value.

The only item I see of cash-value is the LEP, but that's a £120.00 and that is a lot for people to stump-up for at short notice**.

The way FD have handled and released the information is just...I mean...you know... it's so damn Hugh Grant! Dithering, ineffectual, stumbling, tortuous and verging on the farcical; stop faffing about talking about seasons and tell her you love her goddamnit!

FD Hugh-Granting their answers just fuels the frustration.

*There's a 100 page thread asking for answers to simple questions for gods' sake.
** I may have money now, but that wasn't always the case; I know the value of a pound.

Ico.

Did anyone else play that? It gave a whole new meaning to the word "awesome".

Exactly. It isn't so much what they do but how they do it. A little more communication, feedback, and some indication that the fanbase is listened to would go a long way here.

I don't mind paying for more content, but the TIMED discount just feels bad and the lack of information about what this content will contain, and the direction it will go in, makes me doubly dubious.

You don't play and think the game is overpriced, yet you still feel compelled to actively participate in its forum...
feedback, its a mother.....
(and LMAO at a hidden sub, but still P2P, no Servers, you guys are fooling yourselves)

And the dumb thing is, the COD bunnies pay at least that for the annual Activision Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V each year. Don't get me started on Fifa, Madden, etc

actually I don't care at all about any of that. :) I love the game and anything that reduces the barrier to entry and gets more people in the game I am for.

more people playing means more income for Frontier and thus more development dollars for my beloved ED

Been saying this since beta... FD needs to suck it up, admit that the game costs a lot to develop, and go to a subscription model. I'll pay 10-15 a month just like I did for Eve with no qualms whatsoever as long as I get my regular content updates and free expansions, and Frontier will get their development money.
