Best ship for exploring?

Also - dropping out of Frameshift the hauler sounds like its about to die... that always makes me smile. Mind you... the ASP sounds like a Superfortress from WWII. Just awesome.
The Hauler is also missing the internal compartments to put in Repair Modules or other fripperies.

Actually - I just looked at your original post. You could go an awful lot further than you currently are just by upgrading your T6....

OMG! The Asp does sound like one! The engines sound like prop engines! lol

Grats on the new Asp, it's a great explorer. I also use a 6B scoop an it's very fast, making life a lot easier. You won't regret your purchase.

Depends on your scooping style. Once I hit a new system, what I tend to do is the following:

1) Hit the advanced scanner as I dip the nose into the corona to get a nice scooping rate
2) Throttle down, target the star to initiate surface scan
3) Bring up system map to see what do we got, make a decision on whether to go on or stay and scan certain objects
4) Close system map, see that my tank is full, fly out of the corona and proceed.

For this style a 6A would be a waste of money, as I'd never feel the few seconds it takes less to fill. I guess it'd be more useful for covering extremely large distances as fast as possible, but only if you're not stopping to scan along the way. It's a huge price difference so unless you're doing >10k ly speed runs it's hard to justify the price difference for me.

Interesting thread as I am planning upgrade. Currently use diamondback Explorer 32.13 jump range. I do prefer this over the Asp as it seems to be a lot more thermaly resistant a lot easier and safer I find under extreme heat sources.
Looking for more range to get to really isolated places.
I assume Anaconda is only option, how far can it be pushed? And how is it for heat and also fuel consumption.

Thermals on the Asp are actually quite good. It all depends on how you build it. If you spec if for 60-70% of an A2 Power Plant, then it will run as cold as a DBX, and perform nearly as well under extreme heat conditions. The cost for a 6A scoop is very steep, but worth it imo. Even though I can speed scoop nearly as fast in a DBX, I don't think I could tolerate even 20,000 LY of scooping with a 4A scoop.

I am currently out exploring in an Anaconda. I get 40.22LY range (with shields and weapons) although it is possible to configure it to jump ~41.1LY. I also opted for long range fuel tanks (an extra 32 tonnes). The route planning only uses 36.6LY though, so anything over that needs to be done manually. I also have A7 fuel scoop, you just skim the star and you scoop enough to keep your tank topped up.

It is a bit less agile than the Asp, but is ok.

If you want to explore the outer reaches of the galaxy it is really your only option at present.

I'm getting 27.8 Ly range jumps with a ful tank of gas in my T6. I could get more if I ditched some systems, but it feels too naked without the missiles, laser and shields... :).

K.

I'm a few jumps from home after my Diamondback Explorer's maiden voyage to EZ Orionis. I jumped at the chance when I saw I could have a dedicated exploration rig comparable to the Asp for a third of the price. It's an easy ship to get 30LY jumps out of, has plenty of room for the tools of the trade, and she's a looker too. I've avoided combat so far, so I'm not sure how she'd handle a fight in the twilight zone, but she's very good at what she's built for.

i vote for asp. it has slightly better jump range. cockpit looks much better than dbe, and view from it is better also. 6a fuel scoop is brutal. this is one i used to travel tens of thousands of light years: http://edshipyard.com/#/L=70g,,2-3I6u7_6u3m8S6k,522mpV7Q42UI2jw . if you don't have much cash, dbe is way to go, of course. hauler is also very good exploration ship. maxed out for exploration costs under 3mil: http://edshipyard.com/#/L=70V,,2-3m3m3m2C2C2C22,4zM7OW2UI2jw . i have travelled over 50k ly in that same hauler, it's awesome ship!

Hello fellow explorers.

I did my last big trip in an ASP.Now i got myself a DB and got the best equipment for it that money can buy.

The jump range seems about the same (maybe a little less....but it's negligible) and it has less & lower class internal compartments. This means less repair units,no extra fuel tank, and weaker fuel scoop. These should not be a problem in theory (especially not on a shorter trip).
On the plus side i like the cockpit more, and the shape of the vessel, however that yellow paintjob is an eyesore. ...Oh, and no propeller sound in normal space like with the ASP :)

Did anyone make a longer trip in a diamondback explorer? Can I get some feedback?

I would love to see the build for this.

Used to explore in a DBE. Good ship, cheap, good range (sub Asp range). This is an interesting debate about the DBE and the Asp after I recently upgraded to an Asp.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=174483

I have done alot of LY in a DBE so I can confidently report on her attributes.

The Asp is basically a much better Explorer ship. In all departments. She is also an excellent trader, miner and hunter. See the comparison attached to the thread.

Its all down to credits. if you can spend 15 mil then you can afford a good build explorer Asp (see my build the Damocles in the comparison attached). My build isnt uber but it works well. You do not have to spend 20 mil+ credits to initailly own a good explorer Asp. yes you can upgrade her beautifully but thats what the game is about, making cash to pimp your ship. And explore, trade fight etc of course.

If you cannot afford 15 mil and want to spend 11.7 mil then go with the DBE. personally I think its false economy to do so, that extra 4mil is easy made in cartographic data and you will own a much better ship.

Your call, I was deluded on the DBE issue for months of deep space travel, got back a few days ago and realised that I will never ever look back after purchasing the Asp.

I'll post it sometime, currently trading (yuk!) in my other Anaconda. I have made some modifications though, namely removing weapons and shields (don't need them) and heatsinks which don't work when you really need them anyway - I can easily jump back into SC/FSD should I be interdicted and I'm not going to fight in the black. I think the current build will do 41.17LY. Working on getting Elite in trading now, or at least as long as I can stand before going off exploring again. Thought - I could get more than 41.17 if I ditch the scanners, it may just be the advantage I need to get that bit further than Sol.

Sol-->Sag. A*(26kly)+move to right of center on 6kly, now i backing , lost 3kly to home space. Hull 100%, modules 100%, traveled sistems - 3100+. D class for all modules, 4A fuel scoop (2-3 min +/-), extra fuel tank at 8t (40t all), jump range 30.4.

Its all down to credits.

No, it's not a question of credits. *puts on top hat and monocle, then lights a cigar*

Like I mentioned in my post I already did some exploring in an ASP (not too much mind you...around 1000 systems – 7-8kly), and I am also aware of all the shortcomings of the DBE. The ASP is a better explorer, no doubt about it.

The reason for the switch was simply aesthetics . The cockpit feels cozy…the lakon workbench™ is still there, but somewhat hidden in all the clutter. I like all the exposed wires, it gives some flavor to this ship.
I’ve seen the comparisons, and outfitted both ships myself for exploring so there’s nothing new anyone can tell me in that field. *flicks ash off the cigar* What I was curious about was what you don’t see in the outfitting… Little quirks the ship might have. And how it performs on longer trips. (maybe a few good stories)

This is an interesting debate about the DBE and the Asp after I recently upgraded to an Asp.
I don't think an ASP cultist topic would be the best place to discuss the DBE, but thanks anyway :p

This is what I wanted to hear….well... sort of. It sounds too good to be true :D You must have crazy discipline to still have the ship at 100% after that distance.

Extra fuel tank, eh? What did you skimp on? Shields or maintenance unit? I don’t really have the balls to go out without either of them. Take my current trip for example...less than 2kly out, but already at 97%.

Its my second trip yo Sagi) In first i have ASP and 95% hull (modules - 40-80%) after 8 weeks travel. Two neutron crushes, one BH inside :), 3 droping on any stars)
Perviosly i want to take Anaconda to surent trip, 5 jumps out of station and back) Anaconda is a realy big slowy ship for exploring.
Me like sound of DB Explorer ship. As Cobra.
- extra fuel tank - 8t
- shield - 4A
- maintenance unit - no
No skip more.
