Obsidian outpost...

So sorry to hear about this. Hopefully FD will restore his ship.

To all other explorers, if your ship is heating up quickly for no obvious reason, it's probably because silent running has been turned on by accident. If you can't remember the shortcut-key, you can always turn it off in the right menu, rightmost tab.

Wow, I just watched this - I've been watching Ant's stuff since I got into the game 2 months ago now. I still haven't gone on my exploration trip yet, but he's been an inspiration to get out there and do it, even though I'm playing on the X1 and there's little point to explore on it after the merge happens. But this was truly heartbreaking to witness. 4 months of data gone. Extremely painful to watch (20,000ly out).

Well spotted. Silent Running was engaged.

So not an ED issue. User error / equipment problem

Harsh but it is Elite "Dangerous"

Massive fan of Obsidian's youtube video's. Poor guy, if anything as screwed up as that happened to me, I'm pulling the plug to disconnect the game. No way would I lose 4 months of work due to a glitch.

Ah man, thats really bad that ghost input really got him. I'm 30k Ly outs started heading back yesterday, thank god I don't have problems like this, love you 360 controller!

Also my respect to Obisidan Ant, I wold have used a lot of not so nice words and screaming in a situation like this ^^

I'm going to un-bind any control input from the Silent Running "feature"

I did similar with the "dump all cargo" button when over a hundred tons of rare goods spilled out of my ship at the entrance to a station. Getting fined for every one of them was just the icing on the cake.

Been tempted to get an X55 but think I will stick to my X52pro until these driver issues get sorted.

It should be very obvious when you have engaged silent running, verbal message repeating every 5 secs and/or a written message flashing on the screen.

That's pretty shocking. Every explorers worst nightmare. 4 months data ? Couldn't believe there weren't any swear words (well not in the bit I saw, anyway)... Respect just for that - let alone his youtube posts.

I watched this happen live, I have been following Obsidian's exploration series for months and I couldnt believe it. What a shame. He was asking in the stream if he should put in a support ticket seeing as he was killed by a bug. I think he will. He wont get his data back though.

A tragedy.

This is one of my biggest fears. I am nearing 5 months and 10 thousand systems worth of data. I'd be devastated if I lost all of my work due to an issue not even remotely under my control, even more so if it was. And I'm only halfway through my trip at this point. Already getting anxious.

So sorry for your loss, Ant. Hopefully it doesn't discourage you from stepping out again.

.
The "bug" was at his end ,not the games end.
.
I do like the guy ,I learned about mining from his vids.....but if you know you got joystick problems ,why get close to a black hole , Hard luck Ant , next time will be flawless I'm sure :)

Still, they will put his ship back at his last location and compensate him for lost earnings. Support have fully reimbursed cmdrs that have flown without insurance, dived into a combat zone and cried about it on the forum.

Whichever way you look at it, he experienced a bug, I think they will be happy to help him however they can.

In this case, I really hope you're right.

A station would be nice, but does not make sense so far out. What about a beacon and a wreckage field, as sort of a monument, that fellow explorers can visit.

Good call. A mention on galnet news would be nice too, an epitaph to a fallen explorer.

I had a similar thing happen to me ..luckily i only lost 2% hull

I used to jump into the system and slowly roll into scooping distance then look at the system map to survey its contents while taking on small amounts of fuel

The particular time in question i was still slowly rolling forward and the system starting screen hung, i could see myself rolling into the sun and do nothing .

once the screen completed it had ejected me away and i was able to get my temps back to normal

After all the effort obsidian puts into his videos i feel a little gutted for him

:(

Just watched the video :( That's a really crappy thing to happen, you can see his ship was starting to cool down once back in SC, he probably only needed another 10% hull to survive, although he would have had a tough time limping home.

I guess the one thing he can take from this is all the amazing videos and visuals he got out of the trip, hs videos inspired a lot of people to leave the bubble. It's great to be able to claim systems for your own, but it's all about the journey.

This has happened before - an explorer losing 4 months worth of data due to an unfortunate incident. The 'Sunny Side Up' incident out in the Perseus rim springs to mind.

If Obsidian wants to name the system he died in and to preserve the event with others that unfold in our background history, it could be added to the mapping project as an historical point of interest... Similar to how other historical exploration events have been.

I doubt FD will go around creating outposts in honour of player events like this, nor achievements, since players have circumnavigated the galaxy, crossed from one side to the other, and even Zulu Romeo's trip to Sag-A, all special achievements that never earned a mention on GalNet, never mind having FD build outposts in their honour.

It's down to us fellow explorers to preserve and honour the events and history we're creating via the great exploration diaries and story threads on these forums. Being a storyteller too, I'm sure Obsidian would agree.

@Erimus, fair enough, I see your point, and would never really have expected fd to do anything as dramatic as dedicate an outpost.

But they have been encouraging player based stories to weave into their narrative and pad out galnet news feeds a bit. Just thought since ObsidianAnt's demise was very public it would be pretty cool to see some mention within the game itself.
