Looks like CIG has been making more than just ships. I'm pleasantly surprised

Considering how much work CIG are putting into these landing zones I hope they will add multiple routes to the landing pad.
Yeah if it where free flight Id be impressed, but since its just a glorified cutscene im not.
Year ago when they showed the planetary landing scene and alot of people went crazy and I couldnt see why, sure it was a good looking full motion scene but in the end still just a cutscene, moving the player from one area to another. Good solution but not technically anything new to cheer about.
In any case, it does look really good and if they can keep this level of detail throughout the game it will be amazing still!
The fairly dull multicrew showcasing also proves that there are great potential for co-op rpg-ish gameplay, something Im really looking forward to!

Oh i thought this was a planet, seem like its an asteroid so I may have to start spending some more attention

No, it's a bit like hyperspace in elite. You have no control over your ship but you can still look around and maybe get out of your seat and walk around the ship.
With multiple paths to the landing zone it could still be quite cool.

Stuff like that does look really cool...
If the dogfighting is still horrible at release it may still be enjoyable playing a peaceful career if the environments are all as cool as that.
Is it an on rails autopilot sequence or do you fly it? Edit... answered above, cutscene...bah!

Actually it's not a cutscene at all, it is however on-rails (or autopilot if you like). This means you can't control the ship, but you're perfectly capable of walking around inside of it and doing whatever you feel like (so you don't even have to look outside the cockpit if you grow tired of the scenery).
The reason why I'm pointing this out is because SC does actually have "masked loading screens" (although the Nyx video didn't feature one). If you go back and look at the original planet landing video, it did feature such a sequence (from 2:15 until 2:45)

A bit of both I would suspect. In other words it's probably only a first pass, but it is probably also a fairly close approximation of what they're envisioning for the final game.
It might as well be a cutscene though because it's totally hands off, what else are you going to do? You can't alter engines, you can't alter navigation, your cargo is already strapped down and so on. You're just there twiddling your thumbs like a lemon, probably end up pretending to do something so the cutscene isn't as obvious.

Almost 12 hours later (of an estimated 5 hours) and there's still almost 17GB remaining to download. I've had to kill and restart the client 4 times so far as it keeps just stopping downloading anything (no network traffic at all to/from the exe).
This might take a few days... not every impressed. Especially as every time I update it insists on downloading everything again.

It's an interactive cut scene, and all planetary landings will be done that way. Very disappointing to be honest, as it's going to get old VERY quickly having to sit though that. And as it's a hidden loading screen there's no way you can possibly skip it.

No, Chris Roberts has repeatedly stated that landing on planets will be an automatic process. You won't ever be able to fly down to the surface on manual controls.

Personally I'm fine with it being on rails landing. It's still awesome, and really I have ED if I want to land on a planet anywhere I want. This is still very impressive what they're doing. Each landing zone and each planet will be unique and I already was impressed by the amount of atmosphere that Arc Corp has, and it's an empty shell, lol.
Definitely looking forward to seeing this evolve.

DL speed varies greatly, bear that in mind. I started it this morning, still 5GB to go.
