Star Wars: Dangerous

Can you elaborate a little on what exactly makes it feel like a Star Wars game for you? When I watch the videos and such from the Alpha players, I get the feeling it's like FFE on steroids. A little Wing Commander-ish perhaps, but that's just my impression.

As for individual 'style', I think any spaceflight simulator will have a lot of similarities in some respects. That's something you're simply never going to be able to shake off.

Doesn't look or sound anything like Star Wars for me, going by the videos.

I rather like the sound effects, especially the noise of the engines spooling up and that metallic noise as you get rammed by another Alpha player!

To the OP, do you own the Alpha or are you referring to videos that have been posted on YouTube?

Well just want to clarify again that I'm talking about all sound related stuff (music and sfx), I'm ok with visuals and gameplay at this point.

When I first watched the Capital Ship video I was reminded of Star Wars, there is a certain few cords that are identical to some of the Star Wars music (Phantom Menace in particular) and the acceleration sounds remind of Speeder Bikes from Return of the Jedi.

Yeah, some of you noticed it.

To the OP, do you own the Alpha or are you referring to videos that have been posted on YouTube?

No, I don't have the alpha but this is not like gameplay (something where there is a big difference between playing it and looking at others playing it). You can get all the feels related to sounds and music just watching enough videos.

I'm hoping that the music written for the game is as original as possible. Still, I'd imagine its not trivial to write a score and theme soundtrack.

Its not just a case of if you don't like it switch it off. Its an area of real importance for any game because its ends up becoming a large part of a games identity.

Exactly. I'm sure ED don't need these "star wars vibes" to make a great score, nor the same with the sfx. I was expecting something more original on its own.

I don't see/hear what the OP is on about, ED does have its own style even the lasers are not reminding me of SW in the least so this is a real puzzler. I hope nothing changes the sound design of ED IS AMAZING.:S

I don't have alpha access but I have been watching as many videos as people post and I can honestly say that until you made this thread. Well... the thought of it even being anything like SW has not crossed my mind a single time. Also as a note, Elite has always had its own style and I get that same unique feel now. Love the music and yeah, the ships sounds are very unique. I like em. I track what you're saying, I just don't get that feel mate. ;)

Space games, and popular science fiction in general, exist under the monolithic shadow of Star Wars. Here's a brief list of some of the things popularised by Star Wars:
Close range dogfighting
Capital ships that resemble boats
Cockpits that resemble those of fighter planes
Magical handwavium gravity fields
Super dense asteroid belts

The original big name space combat games (Elite, Wing Commander, X-Wing) were heavily informed by SW and replicated the SW experience. Their legacy has pervaded the genre ever since.

Everything in ED gives me SW vibes, not just the soundscape.

I'm not saying whether or not this game sounds like Star Wars, but I probably would prefer Elite having a strong identity of its own for the soundscape. Just something to consider.

I apologize if I didn't make myself clear. I don't think the music remotely resembles SW in any way shape or form. I'm 60 so I saw all the movies from day 1 more times than I can count. I don't think the ships sound like the speeder bikes even one millionth of one percent. Serious. Not trying to exaggerate or be rude. I seriously mean what I said. I've played space genre games since forever. Always been my big love. I loved space scifi long before SW ever came to be. I even played in a band during the late 70's/early 80's so I can recognize music patterns normally. And yes most music is based in part off something else. But not all. I have found the music from ED refreshingly new. I really enjoy it. So from my point of view the graphics are not only unique, so is the music and FX sounds. ..............shrug

The music so far has been quite a blatant homage to John Williams. I hope it improves and finds its own voice. We haven't heard that much yet though.

6 pieces I think.

There's the capital battle video
The title theme as you load the game
In game - tense, everything about to happen
In game - battle sequence
In game - victory
In game - defeat

Cheers,

Drew.

I've never connected any Elite game to Star Wars until I read this thread (and I still don't see a connection)
I think Elite does have it's own identity.

Now I've watched a few more videos and paid more attention to detail, I'm thinking there's certain things in the Alpha which remind me of Buck Rogers, Blakes 7, Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, The Last Starfighter, Flash Gordon, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1, Wing Commander, and several dozen other sci-fi movies and TV shows which feature space battles involving some 'pew-pew' and music sound effects.

I'm sure you're all aware that "reinventing the wheel" is an important tool for the implementation of ideas in a game such as this. I say this without any derision or contempt.

I'm sorry Red Line but you are wrong on all counts.

The first ship with a cockpit was Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers from the 30's and 40's. They also used ray guns. Had dogfights with other ships. Had gravity rays and anti-gravity objects including entire cities. Huge capitol ships that looked like boats.

The Millennium Falcon was actually styled after a hamburger and a olive on its side. For real, google it.

During the 50's we had Destination Moon as well. Based on a story by Robert Heinlein, one of my scifi heroes.

That doesn't even take into account The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Earth vs The Flying Saucers. (Massive flying ships, anti-gravity and giant ray guns).

The Angry Red Planet.

Forbidden Planet. Which pretty much invented the movie robot idea, not SW.

And how about Lost in Space? Which also had Robbie the Robot originally from Forbidden Planet.

War of the Worlds.

2001 A Space Odyssey.

And lets not forget Star Trek was almost 10 years before SW.

Even Space: 1999 predated SW. Bad series but still prior, lol.

And as a final note, here is a website about SW you might find interesting.

Take care and have fun reading the link. :D

Thanks, that is some good stuff.
I agree that Star Wars did not invent those tropes, but like I said I think Star Wars popularised them. Or protracted them, at the very least. Which has informed the space combat genre into the present decade.

I've always thought of Elite as "The Battle of Britain" in space and the end of Star Wars as "Dambusters" in space. Frontier can't stray too far from the original model design. The shapes might've been constrained by memory restrictions but they were also heavily influenced by the massive shadow of Star Wars that still hung over all of us.

As Doctor_Demento says, the idea of fighters rolling and banking in the vacuum of space wasn't new when Star Wars did it, and with how powerful that visual is, I'm sure it won't be the last time either.

I thought the reason for using orchestral scores was to stop movies and games from dating. Classical music never goes out of style 'cause classical music was never in style.

I'm a bit of a philistine with a tin ear regarding music. Scores with lots of brass to evoke Horatio Hornblower or the gravity of large vessels, and high-pitched violins to evoke the spray of stars on a black velvet background, well.. they all sound the same to me.

Not to mention John Carter (Edgar Rice Burroughs) that began them all.

My father was into Buck Rodgers and Flash Gordon from pre-war days so I saw all those and being well into my fifties Star Wars built on what I already was familiar with. In contrast my eighteen year old's view of Space is Star Wars and a bit of Trek.

I felt the Damocles video sound track felt like Star Wars. The Video's I have watched of Alpha not so much.

One of the challenges for ED is appealing to my son's generation who don't know Elite and if a few bars from SW help that I am all for it.

To be honest watching someone flying through the capital ship evokes more similarities with one of the early SW movies and I wish those capital ships were bigger.

Even the colors reminds Star Wars

I'll be honest, I think people are reading too much into it.
You may as well compare Elite Dangerous to bumble bees for the difference it makes, after all, bees are black and yellow, shouldn't be able to fly, have to warm themselves up before take off, and fly from system to system, I mean, flower to flower collecting bounty (nectar).
