Patch Notes Update CQC Update (1.4) Beta Build #2 Incoming

Not sure if you guys know what you're doing there...
I think big ships got nerfed enough for now... Especially the small chance of instant destruction appears completely absurd to me.

It's the opposite of a big ship nerf. The pre-patch behavior was guaranteed instant destruction when power plant health is at 0%. Now, the result is half power output, with only a small chance of instant destruction, so destroying the power plant is no longer an insta-kill.

I was going to say the same thing, I think the patch notes are misleading though, as they can be read to mean that any powerplant hit could be an instakill.

It's only because I'd already read the damage model Dev notes the other week that I'm confident that that's not the case.

I finally got to try CQC. It's awesome fun! CTF is my favourite one so fat, followed by standard DM. Massive amounts of good and fast paced fights in great environments.

I noticed couple of minor bugs - self destruct sequence kicking in randomly, then switching itself off (nearly gave me heart attack in the middle of a very intense match!), unable to accept wing invites from friends, crazy selection indicator in the friends list... Nothing massive, nothing game breaking, just little glitches that you would expect from an initial beta release.

Great job, Frontier, it's very impressive!

The arenas are well made too, good location of structures and power ups, interesting paths to find and the lose-track-of-a-target-you-can't-see idea is genius. Great release all in all, I knew it was worth waiting for. Now, up up and aways, onward and forward, where Horizons meet :)

I think it's a very welcomed change. It creates new tactical options and adds a new depth to dogfights. What was completely absurd was the fact that an Eagle could destroy Anaconda on it's own within minutes.

I really don't want to see anything of this nonsense-mode in my ships computer. Please do not force this immersion breaking game mode on players which do not want it at all.

Immersion breaking? Care to elaborate? As of 1.4 Close Quarter Combat championship is official part of Elite lore. How is displaying a rank of something that is part of the lore breaking your immersion? I'm all up for immersion, but this term is very overused.

Just because you find it nonsensical doesn't just make it so. It just makes it your opinion, no more no less. I for one find it great. It's Olympic Games of Elite universe. Billions of citizens from all over of the colonised space are watching it. Do you realise the amount of money those holo-adverts cost in the arenas? How can you call it nonsense?

I, can't even log on :( some tripe about launcher etc. not happy innit?

How do did you get your beta access? (Premium Beta, KS, Lifetime Exp Pack? ...)

If it's the latter, you need to download the new launcher.

It's a lot better than the current 100% chance of instant destruction!

This is the exact opposite of a Big Ship Nerf.

I've also just seen a screenshot from this beta (which I do not play myself) in which the CQC Rank is shown below the other 3 actual ranks in the ingame status computer screen.
I really hope this rank-info won't make it into the actual game as I really don't want to see anything of this nonsense-mode in my ships computer.

There are players who don't care about exploration... who presumably manage to ignore the "Explorer" rank just fine on their right-hand panel.

When you select "Repair All" it makes the sound of repair but still comes back to this.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, but has anyone noticed in CQC the thruster sounds seem to go? I can't tell if the thrusters have been targeted and damaged or if they're working fine but the sound is weird.

It's usually after I try to boost but there's not enough energy, then I go full throttle and.... almost silence. I'm moving, but not very quickly. Weird.

If he can't, I can: Everything else in the game is linear, like life. You travel somewhere and do something, then have to travel somewhere else to do something else. CQC is a separate universe. A minigame. An actual pilot in an actual ship can't simply "appear" somewhere else without traveling there. While I don't have the visceral issue with it that he apparently does, I think it would be less immersion breaking if you actually went somewhere to participate, like the Olympic Games, since you referenced it.

I do agree that I'd rather not have to look at my rank in something I've never participated in (and in this case exists in some alternate universe). Its like a plaque on my wall stating "You have -0- Olympic Gold Medals". Thanks, Sherlock.

EDIT: I'm assuming here that his immersion issue with the display of CQC rank is by association. I may of course be wrong.

Let them stop, and look at this picture for a moment and realize how silly it really is. CQC is definitely not part of the main game. Get that stupid rank off from there please.

I was sceptical since the first announce but CQC does really feel right integrated to the game's atmosphere in my humble opinion; Many thanks & congrats for bringing the CTF mode in the mode selection. It is kind of 'ballsy" in 2015. This is the mode that honours leveldesign (for many games) and it should be proposed as the first choice in the mode selection.
I mainly play Quake's CTF and Urban Terror's CTF which are/were really great games for that; I like the 'you have lost the lead'; I'm not sure it is a wink but i felt home.
Also the Condor is great with FAO, it is really well implemented and feels balanced for now. I've yet to play more but I got my load of epic moments just with a few hours playing. I'm now wondering/suggesting a few things since i didn't find out if the following were implemented/planned to be implemented or not :

- First of & before releasing it, we need a way to automatically rebalance teams in terms of players number. I'm pretty sure you've probably planned it before release but I needed to write it here just in case. Too many times already we had a 2vs4 configuration, or worst, 1vs4; Nobody seemed to care or to know how to rebalance that since it never happened. So players leave.

- I'm wondering about the role of panels since their layouts could change in a fancy way just for these modes. Have you planned something ?

- While scoreboard and loadouts could be accessible through left panel, we need an "exit" button on the in-game menu below scoreboard & loadouts; Also to avoid being stucked in that window; A "bug" I couldn't yet reproduced but it was impossible to escape that window at some point; The only remaining choice was alt+tab/forcing the game to stop.

- Left Panel could have a "join opposite team" option, available if your team has 1 more player. But, make it impossible to join the opposite team if they have the lead.

- Left panel could also have a "vote restart", "vote score limit" & "vote next map" eventhough some would probably be spammed but frankly all the levels I've played are really nice.

- Also I thought/felt according to the gamescom CQC trailer that it was possible to pass the flag like a missile ? I've dreamed it or what ? Now I think that probably the flag was just following the ship. Although I think it would be fun but dangerous for the well being of the CTF mode, what would be nice is to at least being able to drop the flag to your defender ?

- It would be nice to know which power-up are still active. Shields PU is easy but rest is not obvious. >sorry about it, I don't know how you actually could have make it more obvious...

- More adapted scoreboard for CTF, with captures even though it's being picky.

- Being able to chat while waiting for next round.

- I really felt the CQC could have been integrated and accessible from the left panel from a specific starport or something, just below powerplay. Then you confirmed that no it wouldn't be the case, and now I can play the mode you made it kind of a way to make us wish that even more ? It is so well integrated right now and I was waiting less from CQC to be honnest.

Here and there it's a great surprise and thanks a lot, yet again it adds to the experience. The Condor is great and flying around like that was missing to the game. Is it that one which will be added as a large ship's module ?

Despite the CQC training video's reference to "loaned ships", I'm perfectly comfortable with CQC being a VR environment in terms of Elite lore...

16 MAY 3301 - Sol Unplugged?

For the first time in almost a decade, Utopixx Entertainment, the subsidiary of Reynhardt Intellisys responsible for some of the top virtual reality experiences in the galaxy, has posted an operating loss of almost 5,000,000,000,000 credits.

Investors were shocked by the news, which saw Reynhardt Intellisys shares drop by almost 14%.

Reynhardt Intellisys has issued the following statement in an attempt to explain the drastic change in profits:

“Overall, uptake of Utopixx products in Independent, Alliance and Imperial markets remains strong. We continue to see a yearly growth rate of between 1 and 2% per sector, which in many cases means that we are exceeding our targets.”

“The losses posted for this year are partly due to the construction of a completely new and extremely exciting line of VR-Streams, which includes the latest instalment in the popular CQC franchise.”

“In-sim purchases within Federal markets have fallen below expected levels, but an analysis of the market suggests that such losses are part of a general downward trend that appears to be affecting a wide range of media companies operating in Federal systems. The cause of this drop-off in purchases remains unclear at this time.”

There was also mention in GalNet of CQC being used as a training tool for the Federation Navy, which also fits the whole VR thang...

30 JUL 3301 - Meet the Powers – Zachary Hudson

Continuing this GalNet exclusive series, political commentator Marcus Macmillan writes his opinion of some of the movers and shakers in 3301. In this fifth article he analyses Federal President Zachary Hudson.

Republican President Zachary Hudson became President after the disappearance of President Halsey and a vote of no confidence in the Senate. He has always been supportive of the military, and has recently announced his support for CQC Championship as a training and recruitment tool for the Federal Navy. He is also approving additional funds to begin upgrading and expanding the fleet to counter the threats he sees beyond the Federation’s borders.

...

Fact is, FD realised that more people would play CQC mode if they could "just play it", instead of having to fly somewhere and dock to play it.

If a physical location is important for any individual player's in-game lore, pick one. Make a point of always flying to a particular station in Sol for your CQC participation.

Yeah - this ^^.

I've always been of the personal opinion that immersion is largely a matter of choice. People who complain about immersion-breaking are just being imagination-lazy. In my view. I will admit that there are the occasions where it is just not possible to create your own way around a totally illogical situation, but really, that is pretty rare. These are games - that's all. You will always have to make adjustments and allow yourself to "suspend disbelief" if you really want to enjoy the game and pretend to be something that, plainly, you are not.

Sort it out - don't let your own silly limitations spoil what is a great experience, just because you get all prissy about some minor imagined immersion-breaking scenario. Make it work for you! Put some effort in.

er... Are you telling me I'm not really a commander of a starship?

I have to say, in only a handful of CQC matches so far, I've already experienced some of my greatest ever gaming moments. It's surpassed my expectations by quite a bit. On top of that; I've improved enormously as a pilot (I think). Previously, I was perhaps too timid and afraid but with CQC - especially in the fragile, agile, Condor - I'm boosting and turning around obstacles in ways I thought were impossible for my crooked wee fingers (mouse/keyboard player).

Also, thanks to the bloody voice comms seemingly activating automatically as with wings (big problem that in my opinion), I've had a couple of matches where I could co-ordinate a bit with others in my team. Personally though, I think it's uncool having voice comms on automatically and no way to switch it off (that I was able to find at least) when the match begins. It's also not cool that people aren't notified they're being broadcast to strangers. I now have to start every match by warning people with mics on that I can hear them (did't realise how noisy some joysticks are!) and then I have to apologise for all my screaming and swearing. There's a massive problem too I've experienced in some matches with... some kind of feedback loop coming from someone's comms. I hear myself echo back then the most horrifying feedback begins and remains for the entire match with no way to switch it off. I have a video demonstration of this if required but it's painful to listen to.

Anyway! Great work so far. Loving it. It makes me tremble with joy and excitement. Mixxi like the big gun go pew pew. :D
