Also, Catpain! I started shooting at you in CQC first night but I think you might have been afk :p

Kind of - I was probably mashing all buttons trying to figure out how to respawn (I was suffering the VR bug spawning me somewhere in space at the far end of the arena instead of my cockpit).

I dream that portal and half life will come exclusive to VIVE and see everybody throwing to the trash the cv1, but then again they will not do that, oculus would.

I agree with you that exclusives for a niche product can only hurt VR as a whole - however I think you give valve way to much credit.

Valve were actually the 1st company to force you to use 3rd party software to tie you into their platform regardless of if you had a DVD or not AFAIK (half life 2)

loads of games will not work without 1st logging into steam, and steam do take a massive cut of profits from a game. Steam is such a goliath that many games simply will not sell well unless they pony up the cash to valve to be part of the steam machine.

I burn no candle for oculus, but equally do not fool yourself that Valve is the messiah either. Both are huge companies and both would happily hold the VR monopoly if they thought they could pull it off imo. (this is not me hating on Valve / steam either I DO like their platform, but up until recently their refunds policy was bordering on illegal as well not to mention the barrel they hold you over if your account ever gets locked)

I fully expect there to be VIVE exclusive games as well as CV1 exclusive games. I hope i am wrong but I fear both will play that game.

The fact you HOPE valve do this stinks of certain double standards to me as well imo.

Their CV1 presentation was disconcerting to say the least - all that talk about third person games and oculus home. When I saw this bit, I thought they were pulling my leg. Seriously - they make a VR Headset and then use it to simulate the player sitting in a virtual living room and playing a third person racing game on a virtual TV instead of placing the player in the drivers seat whilst streaming it from an Xbox... Yeah - right.

Vive it is then.

At Gamescom, DB was asked about the future of VR and have they played with the CV1. (Forgive me for paraphrasing your question Slackr). The answer was along the lines that oculus may not be the best kid on the block.

I happened to have been standing right at the front when he was asked that question. The panel said off mic, we can't tell em can we. Then they gave that answer. Can only assume they were taking about the Vive, but they looked really excited.

Vive it is then. :)

Both, as long as Im still employed by then. Ive also got a FOVE coming and will probably check out Starbreeze's number if it comes together nicely.
I dont want to miss out on anything in this generation of HMD's. From next generation onwards I'll probably aim for the one that suits me best.

To be honest, I'll probably stay with my DK2 as long as ED runs on it and wait to see what way the wind blows. Ever since FB bought Oculus I've had an uneasy feeling about what CV1 will be.

But, I'm not fussed either way as long as the quality is there.

You are completly right Mike, 100% sir. Your wisdom overpowers my existence, i am serious. However i fear this future:

I put my lovely cv1 to play Elite, the firts screen that comes is "please log into Facebook". The second is my facebook page updating "Starlion in playing Elite on Facebook VR"

This is what a lot of people said after the facebook buy out - indeed when i lent my rift out to a mate it came back with a big facebook thumb sticker stuck to the front. I was not amused!. Still.... it has not happened yet, only time will tell. ultimately though it is a buyers market. there are loads of HMDs in developement now, and whilst there will be some what of a OR/Vive monopoly for maybe the 1st year or so, this will soon evaporate and if either of them get too draconian with their DRM etc then surely another headset will take over.

I am hoping that any game which comes locked to 1 headset over the other gets cracked and hacked to run on the competing headset. call me a thief all you want (I am not saying "you" personally) but I will take great pleasure in running a hacked "exclusive" game from another headset on mine........ illegal... maybe but screw it. ;)

That would be commercial suicide and definitely wont happen. Fear not.

Wasn't aware that any other VR headset existed and was compatible with ED. The Vive doesn't look like it will be quite as high a spec as the CV1 though.

That said, which ever one works the best overall and the one where I no longer need to change the colours away from the stock offering is likely to be the one I'll buy. Having a green HUD is better for the DK2 but I do get tired of all the other colours being wrong.

There are actually several others, they don't get quite the press of Vive and Oculus. Other VR HMD's: Razer OSVR, FOVE, Samsung Gear, Zeiss VR One, Visus, Avegant, and StarVR. Granted most of these are not a good comparison against Oculus or Vive, except for Razor OSVR, (maybe)StarVR, or (maybe)FOVE. There are some more, but I can't recall them.

Also, several are still heavily in development and are far away for release. Razer dev kits released a few months ago.

Of course, compatibility is tbd for all of these.

I didn't include Microsoft Hololens because that is AR, not VR.

g.
Thats not right, it is the vive which superior in specs, they both actually run two screens at 1200x1080 oled at 90hz but the vive have superior tracking. Thats why maybe the vive could be more expensive, we saw the cv1 of oculus but we still need to see the final version on the vive which will havs better ergonomics than what we have seen that is a developer edition.

the vive with 2 light houses is better than the rift with 1 camera... however the rift supports 2 cameras, which from what I have hear pretty much has it on parity with the vive tracking wise.

also, do we know if the vive final design will actually be much different from the dev kit? becasue compared to the vive devkit the rift CV1 is a design of beauty.

anyone who buys either HMD and is not getting both is taking a risk by blindly buying the vive imo, and anyone who tries to claim that one is objectively better than the other at this early stage is kidding themselves imo. it is very early days right now and the jury is - or should - still (be) out

edit. PS I just noticed i replied to you again, technically disagreeing with you.. Just for the record i have no vendetta against you, and am just chatting... its all good :)

HTC has stated it is not the final design for the Vive. Not fair to compare it to a consumer design really. I'm sure it will come out looking pretty slick, and lighter. Same with the hand controllers.

Sure... and I am not really comparing anything yet (ok maybe i was a little! ) (furthermore I have not tried either and only going on 3rd hand info)... Which is kind of my point!. It is way to early to draw a line in the sand and state which will be the better HMD right now.

6 months from now (hopefully) we will know much more :).....

Answering the poll is not some sort of binding agreement. You're welcome to answer now with what you do know, and change your mind later when more information surfaces.
There are some really cautious people answering (or not answering) that are afraid to vote so early.

This is an early poll. I think the idea is to determine interest based on the specs/info already out.

As for me, I'm more interested in the Vive. Love the tracking I've seen so far.

CQC Mike, lets settle this(evil voice)
