Real concerns - the future of Solo when everything is going multiplayer

I am excited to hear about multi crews, new missions and hell, even crafting!

But I can't help but wonder what is going to happen to solo mode, solo lost out when Wings was released as there were no AI wingman added - which changed the dynamic quite a lot. Now with multi crews being announced, I can't help but be concerned that solo will lose out here as well - will the largest ship still be able to function correctly with just the pilot in control, or will NPC crew be added?

Don't get me wrong - this is not about 'solo vs open' but more about one game mode starting to lose out - when these announcements are made, nothing is said about this.

Would anyone at Frontier like to comment?

I can only see crew members working if it's npc based with a live player being an opt in, crew members are not new to the elite world, I just hope u don't have to spend 12months sat at a station to recruit a full crew for a python like u did back in the day.

I also hope they build in a experience tree for your crew so u can train and grow them along with you

I think they said that all ships can be controlled by one person so you'll still be able to fly everything in Solo.
If however, you might be daft enough to take a fighter for a spin with 5% health left on your Anaconda, I wouldn't expect a safety net.
It'll be interesting to see how how it works in Solo regarding Combat situations regarding jumping into your smaller ship and how the main ship defends itself.
It's not something I'd think of doing myself though and what happens if you die? It may not be an option in Solo if there isn't a second player on the ship, as in Group / Open. Like would you trust the AI to look after your 10+ Million re-buy Anaconda?
Wouldn't stop you from sending out some AI support though which would be cool.
Questions, questions...
They probably have it sussed out though, like an alert if your ship gets attacked in orbit or such. "X" amount of time to get back to your main ship and having to fly your way through to get back on board would be cool.

12 months? you were lucky. I know of some players who should have dies of old age...

Play AndyJ's version of FFE with all the bugs fixed, and graphics spruced up.. :D

Who in their right mind will sit on a ship while their mate has fun flying it about?

How does it make sense tactically to have one ship with two fighters in its bay piloted by friends, when you could have three ships with two AI fighters each?

Same thing in Star Citizen, one of the clan bought a multiple player ship. He was really excited about flying about with a crew when it finally turns into a game. Everyone else had the same idea. No one wants to crew, everyone wants to be Captain.

Out of all the features I'm hoping they don't spend much time on that one. Elite Dangerous - The Passenger Simulator

According to todays newsletter, ship launched fighters can be under ai control, so there goes that theory.

Unless I'm mistaken they said AI would pilot your main ship while you go out in your fighter. I didn't hear anything about fighters being AI controlled.

Your joking right? Solo should always be the red headed step child because it has the least possibility for expansion. You cant program AI that are better than Humans.

I don't understand the concern in this thread. Really. You can do everything to pilot a ship yourself, why would you assign a NPC to do it when you could do it better?

And you can still let the AI pilot the condor you're carrying.

To me multicrew is about getting players together to have a laugh and chat over coms. When I'm occasionally in solo because I'm feeling anti social I'll just fly my ship alone. No disadvantage whatsoever.

All IMHO of course.

Why do you people keep referring to the different forms of game play in a derogatory fashion? So a player chooses to play in solo?
does this make them a lesser player?
is this grounds to exclude them from aspects of the game?

NO IT JUST MEANS THEYRE ENJOYING PLAYING ELITE IN THEIR OWN WAY

grow up this isn't the playground were all in this together the game needs us all to survive and grow not devision and derision

In the older games you could not fly without a minimum crew complement. I would like to bring something like this back. Buy your large ship and it an fly as sole pilot with onboard computer but not at full effiency. This then opens up huge potential for seeking out and training high level ai crew.... Not to mention the anaconda just feels silly when u are on a deserted massive bridge with all the staff points there but unmanned

Anaconda needs 8 crew according to lore

Ok, agree with this. But you do everything yourself and probably do it better. But what you describe is an awful lot of work to do right. Maybe someday.

To be honest it will be really funny to hire a human crew and people from crew gang up against the mothership :D

For some things it's trivial - the difficulty comes when toning down the AI to make it believable and give you a chance.

(Some MP FPS games are plagued with aimbots which are a form of AI and they never miss ;))

Edit:
In the context of ED the gimballed weapons & turrets are controlled by the game (AI) - they can be made to never miss & track perfectly if the Devs wished, which from a recent post by them (paraphrasing here) they said it wasn't fun for the defender. The tricky part for them was to introduce some randomness that gave the defender a chance but at the same time made them believable and usable.

For AI controlled ships the current form you see are bugged & do not use all their abilities - the Mistress of Minions hopefully will return to complete some changes she was working on to give most of you battle hardened vets a good run for your money. For the rest of us (like me) who are a bit pants being able to hire some AI wingmen / AI crew maybe a blessing and give us a chance :)
