How will aliens differ from humans when it comes to technology, ship design, etc?

A machine war could even be the basis for a whole expansion later on.

Imagine rogue 'minds' (Iain M. Banks), colossal 'Berserkers' (Fred Saberhagen) and Elite's very own Butlerian Jihad (Dune).

Ooo-er, getting over-excited now. Better have a lie down. :)

I think the primary word in there is 'Imagine'.

Please don't tell us FDEV (apart from some interesting facts we never knew about thargoids, maybe, as they are known about somewhat), let our imaginations run riot until we actually find out what's out there so we can go "Oh. I wasn't expecting THAT." or words to that effect.

I'm hoping they don't say a damned thing about what's out there in the black. Assuming there's anything out there at all. I would dearly love to be the first to come across an unknown alien race and live long enough to get back and tell someone about it.

And can you imagine coming to the forum and posting "look at the aliens I found", and the wall of "sure sure" and "yeh yeh" you'd be met with!

Even your screenshots would receive, "fake!" :)

Weren't there catlike beings in Frontier?
There were cats, lobsters, birds, rats, pretty much everything under the sun.

I seem to remember that there was a war against AIs, after which they were made illegal, but that there may be surviving AIs out there somewhere. I'm guessing that's DB leaving the option open for a possible expansion or injected event.
All those players expressing a wish to find a new superior weapon in the darkness...wouldn't it be funny if they got their wish? ;)

Aha didnt know they had a different name, thanks for that. I remember them copulating to the point where they invaded your cockpit screen lol

Until you flew nice and close to the sun and toasted the little fellows.....I love the smell of napalmed Trumbles in the morning!

and I believe you can burn them off by skimming a sun. I think one of the challenges was trying to keep a small population alive as pets.

The trumble battle cruisers will, of course be magnificent.
Fantastic news!

The FD Devs now confirmed Trumbles have evolved into a belligerent sentient species, that they've become space-faring, and are hell-bent on war with the human factions.

That's going to be an epic expansion mod... Furry Fury! :D

(Seriously, do it!)

I'm not sure if i remember that correctly, but wasn't it the way that you could sell the trumble-furs after you toasted them?

I would love alien races out there to be discovered rather than announced but i really can't see it being the main focus of an expansion.

"buy the NEW Elite dangerous expansion pack, It has stuff in it, or it might not, you'll have to go look for it, if its there."

I think these are questions better left for add-ons since the initial release will feature humans only (not sure about possible rumours etc. of Thargoids).

Well I personally would be very disappointed in Frontier if we had to wait for an expansion pack for the Thargoids to make an appearance in the game. They should be in from the start even if its only very briefly. Waiting for them to appear in an expansion pack would imo be like releasing the game without the ability to fly or see a Cobra MKIII.

The common Thargoid warrior is a dark chitin-covered insect measuring just over 7 feet / 2 metres in height. They have six limbs, two of which are dedicated walking limbs (legs). The remaining four limbs have jointed hands each possessing three digits, one of which is an opposable thumb.

Given just how many things have been capital or otherwise serious offences in the Elite universe at least in some places and times
  • piracy
  • illegal trading
  • broadcasting trade prices outside their origin system
  • launching without clearance
  • assassination
  • fitting weapons in fixed sideways mounts on your ship
  • making accusations of murder
...without it ever completely stopping anyone from doing it, I would be very surprised if the law against AIs was scrupulously stuck to, even if the major political powers know better.
