Doesn't playing an MMO without other players just totally defeat the purpose of an MMO?

Merged with the appropriate thread.

In answer to your question: the game is neither only an MMO nor marketed solely as an MMO - it is also a single player game and a game that can be played with selected others. This is the way that the game has been designed from the outset - nearly three years ago.

Well GTA online has Solo and private group, never hear anyone complaining about it on the forums. Personally I dip into solo for performance reasons, nothing to do with my PC, in Open I often get long delays when dropping out of warp, flying around busy systems can also cause stuttering despite running a 980TI and overclocked CPU. Solo is smooth as silk

... that's part of why I play in Solo; no one can impact BUT MY IMMERSION! and I'm not putting a downer on anyone's IT'S JUST A GAME!
And from the thread in which you first asked:
I didn't buy Elite because it's an MMO (you have to squint real hard to get it to fit that description even if you only play Open), I bought it because it's Elite and I get to fly spaceships, either on my own or with my mate. What logic you think is required doesn't matter to me at all, you don't get to dictate what I can or can't experience. But IMHO you can continue to play in whichever mode you find the most fun :)

I'm not even a fan (of that TV show), but I can't help but get reminded of this..

Don't normally +rep mods. I occasionally gets slaps from them though.

I believe everyone shall be free to choose how to play, but, if the world calculate all the benefit from the private+solo and open, people that play in Open shall receive a bonus, more money or whatever just because is more risky...

How much more risky is it to take on a target when in a Wing of 4 in Open than alone in Solo?

Depends, from the complaints around here the wing of 4 is attacking a solo trader - cuz we know how powerful a T6 is ;)

Also, as well as human players that are better pilots than NPCs, there are also human pilots that are worse than NPCs
That wing of 4, could be a wing of new players or just plain bad pilots that cannot even take a "Dangerous" Anaconda down, never mind a lone trade ship with guns on it.

No, it doesn't :)

I'm going with whatever, and I pick the valued player interaction.

And Open is not more risky per se, that all depends on how you're playing.

In my question, the target did not change.

Also, your questions seems to mention Wings in solo - we don't have NPC Wingmen yet.

With all the smuggling and CQCing going on, I have seen little CMDRs while mining and bounty hunting smack bang in the middle of the bubble. I might as well have been playing solo.

And I remember coming home yesterday with 12% hull. But I'm obviously an inferiour pilot to all these testosterone sweating PvP Tyrannosaurus Rexes who think it's a breeze in their winged up anacondas interdicting T9s
