Update on Alpha 3.0

In nutshell, developers are not obliged in anyway whatsoever to provide alpha access to anyone. Fact that we can even take active part in testing (which otherway would be done by outsorcing) is privilege. People pay hundreds of dollars for tickets to charity concerts.

THIS! SO. MUCH. THIS!
I can't afford Alpha, I still don't b!itch about it...

People too often mistake opportunity with necessity...

So Alpha 3.0 will be in mid March. beta will be ? and when will gamma will be ? September

What happened to a march release ?

I'm not moaning (ok maybe i am) but we were told during the kickstarter than we would have the full game in march. I admit it's not unexpected but to be honest i think it would be nice for frontier to at least acknowledge the disappointment that the majority of us are feeling.

To just say "it'll be ready when it's ready" is at the very least a little high handed.
Dont get me wrong i don't want then to rush out an unfinished game any more than anyone but come on Frontier at least show some empathy.

Anyway I'm gonna wander off and find something to do for a couple of months I'll check back in when we are a bit closer to see how we are getting on with the whole griefing, microtrans, flight thing.

Peace :)

Exactly, I also remember either frontier saying or I reading somewhere full game release in March. This was probably during the kickstart campagin. I am OK with the delay, not problem but I think Fronteir should make a statement about no release in March

The March release date was only an estimate, as were all the other dates given during the Kickstarter campaign. You can check for yourself on the Kickstarter page here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous

Beta date will be probably given in next dev diary and newsletter as Michael explained yesterday. So two weeks and you will have your official clarity regards schedule.

If I have to guess beta will be at the end of April.

What happened to a march release ?

It was estimate, and in November it was said that this estimate is no longer correct?

You feel disappointed, and it is ok to feel frustrated, I understand. But please don't overgeneralize it. Most of backers seems to keen get game that works in the end, not rushed release.

I don't want them to show empathy, I want them to continue work as much as they can. Sooner we get the game, sooner you will feel better :)

Just subscribe to newsletter and you will be first to know when beta starts and how long it will take, probably in next two weeks :)

They already did, in November's Dev diary. But next one promises to have even more clarity about schedule, it will come in next two weeks.

Estimated release should be on the home page of website as soon as it changed from not being March 2014. There is no data on the page.
As I have said before thousands of backers could still be expecting the full game to be delivered in a weeks time.

Pecisk.
Nice to hear some clarity on issues, and that explains no futher 2.0 releases at this point.

Totally agree.Patience is one of the best virtues, have a little of that virtue.: Smilie:

From Elite release in March 2014, to expecting Alpha 3.0 in March 2014, that is a bit of a delay, but not uncommon I suppose in the industry.

It wasn't any delay as far as I was concerned Maarch 2014 was a completely ridiculous date for game release even as an estimate in the Kickstarter.

One thing is interesting here, for the first time I think I can understand why many games get released unfinished and bugged - I think its probably mainly due to wholly unrealistic developer schedules that the publishers get given that the devs know full well they cannot meet.

Guys, In reference to the March release date.

Can we please not do this again? It's been discussed and debated numerous times on the forums on multiple threads.

Thanks. ;)

There is no reason whatsoever for not being able to concisely pin down the development time of a game, its not as if Frontier haven't done lots of them before. If as an architect I completely missed my tender deadlines to such a degree I would get fired.

However in this case client, t.i. us changed feature set quite a bit, trough DDF also discussions here. FD didn't know there will full immersed cockpit (really, they didn't). FD didn't they they will do pilots or OR support. They didn't know gameplay mechanics will be much more complex than they believed at the beginning. And finally, FD didn't know how in-system travel discussion will turn out.

Delay of ED should be seen as success, because we and FD has enriched initial plan of ED so much, it will be much better game in the end.

Yup... changes/suggestions the backers and DDF have discussed have a great impact on the delays, but this as you state should be seen as a good thing. The game is getting better and better. :)

So Alpha 3.0 is estimated mid-march, we can expect Alpha 3.0 in mid June?
You're in "The future", you tell us! :p

Three weeks is such a short timeframe that I believe FD will succed in aiming quite well this time

, much better than in estimating at the beginning of the Kickstarter campaign. :)

I hope the next two alphas will go faster. AFAIK, extensively testing the network code is the only thing that cannot be easily done in house. All the other features can be extensively QA tested internally. Which is the reason why alpha 1 was much more stable than alpha 2.

If I'm right, when alpha 3 and 4 come out, they will be a lot less buggy. Which will hopefully give FD time to keep fixing the networking issues. Also, I would expect beta to carry over some of the more exotic and hard to fix network bugs.

I cant afford the alpha so I just haunt these forums everyday getting my fix from other alpha players who let us know info about the game, you tube videos and dev diaries, I cant wait to see the docking videos, I too was dissapointed about march but I am prepared to wait and I am just hoping that gamma is not too far away.

I am loving all the info released from all the alpha backers keep up the great work.

In some ways yes, but as they focus on certain features, narrowing choice, it's clear from the unsilent minorities that the game is simply becoming a "please the majority" effort rather than a game for all (unlike one of the selling points from the Kickstarter - "play the game your way").

Of course you cannot please all the people all the time but in a medium such as games it's one of the easiest where you can allow people to experience it their way, as much as possible, and this is going the opposite way. Very little choice on some of the issues that are coming up time and again - 3rd person view (not even an option in solo player), people cannot turn off the engine vibration even though it's making them feel sick, people still want some kind of PvE option, people want guilds, people would like X Y Z... etc.

They've touted the group facility as a way for people to play in private groups and yet the only option on group creation is whether crimes are counted against other players or AI and whether bountied players get kicked out to the All group. Why not boost this system and have options for game changing features above (e.g. 3rd person, PvE, guilds) at group creation as well - let people truly play their way? And have personal options for the things that have no effect on gameplay. That's one thing I am irritated about - it's nothing less than spiteful to argue against options that won't affect your game at all. Arguing against things that do change the nature of the game seems perfectly reasonable of course.

I still intend to play the game but in many ways the choices made are edging me into a position where it's likely it'll be a pick up and drop game. I'm not angry about that (apologies if my words make it seem so), just a little disappointed. :p

It is quite certain that alpha 3 and 4 are planned to be more swift than first two phases, because Michael clarified yesterday that they will give news regarding beta in next two weeks trough dev diary and newsletter. They wouldn't do that if they expect last phases to finish comparingly soon. So let's just wait for news :)
