how does ED compare to SC ?

No, not really. Hangar Module is a concept demo. Nothing of it - except *maybe* for the ship models is going to be used in the game. DMF is less so (of one unconnected product), but we will have to see how it plays out.

No, not really. The Hangar Module is an important part of the finished game and will be included in all future alphas, betas and finished versions. It's where your ships are parked, where you outfit them, where you repair them, where you plan your missions with the hangar computers, where you use the simulator, where you can invite friends for a chat or meetings and look at your ships (later also take them with you out flying), and where you login to climb into your ship before take off.

So it's no concept demo.

Ok, I was under the impression that the code used in the HM would not be reused on the released SC game (although the concept would be).

Thank for clearing that up!

That must be a misunderstanding. Maybe based upon the code they're replacing with Physical Based Rendering (PBR) to make the different materials look more natural. Metal look more metal, rubber look more rubber, and so on. But the Hangar Module is here to stay. It's the first building block in the game.

The Dog Fighting Module will be the second big building stone. Then comes the Social Module - or Planet Side Module, as it's also been called - where you can land and interact with other players in a bar. Inviting guests into your hangar will probably also come in the Social Module. The Ship Boarding Module (SBM) is the fourth big building block before the beta.

About the simulator in the hangar I mentioned in an above message, there was some new info about that from the horse's mouth on Monday, in "10 for the Chairman, ep. 9". He explains the simulator, also called "Arena Mode", here, about 15:05 into the video:

http://youtu.be/Q4OB9Yfo-0Q?t=15m5s

The hangar is also a place where new technology is tested and implemented. I mentioned PBR before, as an example, and Wednesday the Hangar Module was updated with Occulus Rift support also.

Well whatever about various things comparing to SC/ED

Please FD contrast from SC by never never never never never doing anything like that cringe-worthy exercise that RSI are doing in the form of the "next great starship"

I've watched a few of these slots now over there and the more i watch it the less i regard some of the key personalities in that whole project.

Just saw the last episode (epi 5) and watched 2 of the main personalities absolutely rip some teams admittedly poorish effort to pieces using words such as "angry" and "ed off" etc etc to describe this team and their feelings towards their effort.

SC is normally good at projecting itself well but i think that they shouldn't have rubbished what is when all is said and done - an amateur FAN BASED competition. Jeezus, they way they were carrying on you'd have sworn they were employees or something.

Anyways FD don't do this cringey thing to us! :D

Hey...They're just keeping it real

OK first of all never open your mouth and insert your foot. You may end up with a bad taste in your mouth. What you didn't know was this. Over 2500 groups submitted to get in that contest (this has been going on for a couple of months now) and the winners are looking at some pretty hardcore stuff. $25,000, computers for every single member of the team, ungodly expensive dev programs(Full Maya alone is almost $4000), etc. The list goes on. They worked their way down to this point you see of 16 groups. THEN the day before the video you watched was made, the group that presented crappy hand drawn on notepad submission decided they didn't have time to do the contest and withdrew. It is now too late for another group to even try to catch up with what has already been worked on by the other 15. They cheated someone out of a chance because they chose to act like losers and purposely submit crap because they were asked to please try. I not only would be ed, I am ed. I think it was rude beyond words. So they didn't even get what they deserved on the TNGS video. Not even close. You can ask anyone here I am not normally a rude person but when people speak without knowing the whole story it makes me angry. And you still don't have all the facts even now as I'm not going to write 10 page about it all. I'm sorry if you feel insulted, but please do all the research before you tear someone down. I am pledged to both groups. I played both when they came out. I like David and I like Chris. I trust them both. I defend both of these games when people speak out of turn. I have no problem when people disagree. I have a problem when they tear something down and don't have the facts first.

*EDIT* I just thought I'd point out in case you didn't know as well. Several of the people on various teams ARE not amateurs. They are working pros. Some in various fields of graphics and a few are actually currently working at major game companies right now. They just happen to be SC fans too. Just thought you'd like to know *EDIT*

Well, I'm not very interested myself in The Next Great Starship, at this point in development. I've watched all episodes though and there's a lot of talented people participating in the contest. As the doctor says, they get lots of prizes and the competition is supposed to be hard. So they can expect honest criticism too from the judges.

I'll be more interested when the final team is selected and the gunboat model is chosen. Then, I have no doubt that the designers (and Chris Roberts himself) will steer the selected team in the right direction. Of course, they won't allow a ship to enter the Star Citizen universe without approval. They have to work with the SC designers to the finish.

I see this contest as a positive thing. CIG is inviting fans to participate and be able to shape an important part of the game.

As for Elite: Dangerous, this is not natural to copy - if they wanted to do that - because ED's ships are mostly decided by previous versions of Elite.

Just curious, but why is withdrawing from a contest so bad? Luck is always part of everything. And maybe they got scared or got sick or suddenly had other obligations. **** happens.
And why where they selected for the contest at all if they only submitted crap?

I haven't watched the vid and don't know the rules, but this made me curious.

When your finished ranting at me :)

My point wasn't to debate the facts, I know those things, for brevity of my post I didn't need to explain them as the point I was making was regardless of any facts the panel in particular 2 members were:

1. beyond the point of rudeness, no need to do that on a show designed to promote the company and game. Got to hold yourself higher than that in my opinion, maybe in yours they deserved to be hauled over hot coals and vinegar soaked splinters but I found it distasteful and showed the project and those panel members in a bad light. They shouldn't have vented that on air by all means in private I guess but even that's a stretch I think in the circumstances. End of the day that lot picked the teams frankly they chose bad! And that's probably at the root of this public over reaction as more as anything.

2. My other point was a personal opinion that hopefully FD never attempt to copy this cringey rubbish.

3. I'm also a backer of both want both to succeed but stuff like this irritates me as a backer.

And why where they selected for the contest at all if they only submitted crap?
They got selected in a preliminary round, where the task was to design a weapon. This time the teams that passed the first round were invited to design the spaceship.

which in fairness wasn't a great piece of design either :)

There surely must have better entry's in the 2500 bunch than that?

OK go back and read my post again. Then you will see I very clearly explained why. And if you had been watching the Contest vids, seeing the threads and remember this started with over TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED teams months. All who worked hard to get to the end. By team by team elimination they got to the final 16. Look at what these team were competing for. (read my post above for a idea). Look at all the hard work those teams put in. One of them WOULD have gotten to be there and not rudely quit like they did. Chris personally made the tie breaking vote last week that kept them onboard for this week. Then THE DAY BEFORE they quit. CIG explained to them that it was too late for any of the other teams to take their place now as it would take them weeks or more of work to catch up . They were very politely asked to please stay on and try. Instead they not only took the rude way out, they submitted crappy hand drawn pictures on a notebook. No graphics, no 3-D work, no nothing, like the other teams submitted (again at least go see the last TNGS vid). From the extremely crude level of drawings submitted it was obvious they had done it on purpose. They had done it to be rude. They devs were trying to be nice about it, but finally the last 2 including Chris who had stood up for them last week, just said no what they did was rude. I suppose if you want to take the time and go read everything and watch all the videos and read all the threads in the TNGS forum section you may well understand. I have done the best I can explain it to you without you having been through the whole thing. I'm sorry if I failed to make you understand. I am not the only one who was ed at them. What if YOU have worked your ass off to get there and made it to the point these guys were the last one to beat you out and they did what they did. Now you had no chance to win ten of thousands of dollars in prizes alone. Wouldn't you be ed?

I fully sympathize with the guys that left the contest. first their ship was the best of all shown in ep5 - even in this unfinsihed state, the other ships looked wrong and didt fit to the game - i didnt like them at all.

and second real life wins always - always. they earned their spot rightfully they are free to do what they want.

they have been the best 24 of all the 2500.

which in fairness wasn't a great piece of design either :)

There surely must have better entry's in the 2500 bunch than that?

Not to be rude but have you watched all the other weeks as they eliminated the competition week by week? This was the first week they did ships. The first contest were to design weapons that were a new design but would fit in the current universe. If you had the talent to make the gun, which some did a amazing job of, then you more than likely had the graphic knowledge and talent to make the ship. This is the point where the teams now submit their ships designs and are eliminated to the final contestant. And yes there may have been a better team, but now due to the quitting teams rude action that team won't get to try.

They are not going to go back vote all over again thru even a few hundred people, then that team has to make their presentation that the other teams have had several weeks to do and get it ALL done in one week. Not going to happen. They cheated some team who worked hard to get there out of their chance. I don't think Chris was rude at all. I think he tried to be as polite as possible. But what they had done was way over the line. And if anybody is ed on the CIG forums, it is NOT at Chris, its at the rude team who caused another team to lose their chance.

We are not talking about chump change here, we are talking about a great deal of money and software critical to their skill trade they lost out on because of some rude people. Like I told the guy above. What if it was YOU who had worked months to win $25000 dollars, almost as much in graphic programs and computer systems worth thousands of dollars for every single person on YOUR team and that rude team caused you to lose your chance? How happy would you be about now? Hmmmm

I get what your saying but surely there must have been some personal life stuff going on with them that they couldn't submit and decided to drop out. They worked up to that point so there must have been some good reason?

I don't think they rudely decided to drop out by submitting crap, they clearly couldn't put together anything. If they wanted to be utterly rude they could have just not bothered at all and told CIG that they were pulling out completely which is probably what they were trying to do before they were pressured into coming up with something really sub-standard that was going to get ripped to shreds by the panel.

Surely there must have a been a better solution for them.

Anyways cringey rubbish. FD "keep it real" lol
