I find the time-zone argument to be moot. You can stay up 24/7 to defend stuff - its up to you not the game blocking it.
I would love to see someone try. Boring as hell, and not efficient to boot, specially in a game with such a large play area as ED.
(Well, I did see people attempt something similar enough times. I always have a stack of books by my computer, so whenever someone decided to corpse camp my character in a MMO, I would simply pick one of the books and read it for an hour or two while moving the mouse to prevent my character from going AFK. By the time I remembered to get back to the game the would-be camper would be long gone.)

Yep. He is basically saying that the path of least resistance is often the right choice, that taking the harder route just for the heck of it is dumb.

BTW, path of least resistance doesn't really apply to games, because games are basically a just for fun activity; as such, the path of least resistance, when it comes to games, would be simply to not play.

I think you'll find you cannot stay up 24/7 - not unless you plan on a longer stay in hospital or going directly to the morgue.

11 days is the record and requires chemical help to stay awake that long.
Normal people would pass out long before the 3 day mark from exhaustion.

So at best, 24/2 without any major issues. Then what? oh yeah, other people who are online will demolish whatever it was you were trying to do until you passed out.

Guinness World Record rules allow for players to take a ten-minute break for every hour of activity. The breaks could be accumulated, which allowed Kaya to sleep for several hours at a time. This allowance has been made to avoid having situations such as the one in Tainan, southern Taiwan, where an 18-year-old man collapsed and died during a marathon session of Diablo 3 after playing solidly for 40 hours.

My record is 72 hours (Army exercise, stuff kept breaking down) and I was not a well bunny after that. Awesome hallucinations at night though. :D

Interesting read. As long as Solo/group, credit grinding, PP, CGs, or most non combat professions, remain easier than trying the same in open, expecting the majority to choose open is silly. Which IMO is definitely not good for an online multiplayer game.

.... except it's not just an online multi-player game - it's a game that is designed to be played solo or with friends only too.

Exactly this. Play as you want to play it, how you want to play it, in the way that suits you best. The great thing about Elite is that is offers choice, and other players have absolutely no ability to affect any other player's choice as to which mode they want to play in.

Very much this. I got ED specifically because it wasn't an MMO. Or at least, borrowing David Braben's words, not an MMO in the traditional sense.

I won't face other players in combat except in fully consensual scenarios, such as CQC. And I will never, ever, allow another player to pirate me; I would rather delete my game and burn my boxed copy than allow someone to steal from me.

People will play a game in whatever manner they can or want, which has been exactly the case for every game, ever. However, some will also choose the exact opposite of "easy" for the same reason but basic cognitive dissonance is too common for many to understand that as these forums demonstrate again and again.

Should players not be encouraged to play together, instead of only together with their actions?
