Horizons: Can we build our own home / base / garage?

I liked the way SWTOR did it. It was neat to have my grand holiday home overlooking the desert of Tatooine with twin suns passing over head while I sat on the balcony with a cold drink, with trophy rooms, office, bar, guest quarters, med bay, hangar... It'd be awesome to eventually have the same opportunity in Elite. It'll be a while before it happens (if it ever does) but I'm patient.

And that was the only single thing SWTOR did "okay".

IMHO, but you can have a TALE about some planet as your home. To have a story or your own lore, how and where you have born into world, who was your parents, what happened in your world, how you became a pilot etc etc.

Possible, that might be separate topic, where anyone who want, can put its own story (and their posts will be editable, if they want to change something).
Now, if such posts will be more, then together they will make more deep and structured story of the ED Universe.

Perhaps this might give some visionary impulses also for devs...:D

I love the idea of home, place to catch your breath and go "offduty", but I think it would be more realistic if it was a flat, maybe just a room on one of those giant space stations. When we get to walk and can leave our ships, it would be awesome to just walk to your little residence that you have rented or bought! I guess it would be easier to make it happen also, compared to private bases or stations.
This is exactly what I have been thinking about since I started in September. Even renting a room at a station would be pretty cool. Perhaps when we can walk around the stations this may manifest.

Ah, now that's wholly different story - for which there is a whole section in the forum elsewhere.

For example, https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=64

While I cant see us getting our own home / base / garage i'm hoping they will implement something a little more usable for storage, especially with the whole crafting system coming our way, would really suck to have to carry all your raw materials all over the galaxy.

One of the things Frontier brought to a space game that not one since has. It made the game, it made the galaxy believable, it should have been out of the box with the release, but we get it in patch 2....or expansion 2, or what ever they call it. Many of these ideas should have been the basics of the game considering what was done 30 years ago on a much less powerful PC. Now we only get the non-atmosphere planets to land on, not sure why, but it's a start.

This keeps coming up. Why do we not have planetary landings for Elite Dangerous yet when it was done 30 years ago in Elite II Frontier?

Well, for starters Elite II Frontier is only 22 years ago. Second the reason is that nowadays people would not accept graphics like this:

Nowadays we want stuff like this:

We're not just scattering some boxes on a green flat surface anymore and calling it a city. We're not just doing featureless spheres with a few polygon mountains and craters and calling it a moon. Stuff got real. And that takes a long time to code.

Safer though, I can so see there'd be a chance for "bank robbery" and thus for one's junk be stolen. Without notice, even - until you land at your "base" and are informed, 'sorry, stuff was stolen.'

Nice dream, never will happen though - not in reality, at least (referring to the picture).

In my dream... I'd envision XBTF-like economics and similar ship management in Elite.

I imagine finding an earth-like just outside of the bubble. Placing a space weed (onionhead?) factory on the surface with a wing on guard duty. Up above in low orbit, a personal space station selling said product, with a place for me to park my ships, as well as a decent 'bar' where others can meet up for excursions in wings or to just hang out and chat. Also a crew of hired NPC defenders and cargo vessels collecting supplies and selling elsewhere.

Its like crossing a bunch of different genres... unlikely to see happen, but we can dream!

I've thought about personal hangers like you have in EVE or even just one. However, looking back at EVE and Skyrim, and even in real life to the garage I'm clearing out as I've sold a house. All you do when you have place to put stuff is collect rubbish. Stacks of it and then you need more space because you don't want to chuck anything. No thanks ships in storage is plenty I have no desire to collect virtual junk as well as RL junk :)

Sorry, I think you will get a surprise of what can be done even today :) It's fully possible to make.

GTA have done it, and TOH plus many others have done it.

Big cities are not that "difficult" to make, just time consuming.

Something i feel Elite is missing is somewhere to call home. Its always a nice feeling whether you have been out exploring, bounty hunting, trading or what ever to have a place sanctuary or a final destination to come back too and call home. In the X-series, you could set up and colonise a system, defend it, have patrols set, and so forth and this provided a feeling of a home system.

In Elite it seems, with all systems / stations being rather a copy of the last, with no connection to any in particular, no where to take a break from the cockpit, it all feels rather hobo and distant.

Would it not be great if you could find some far off (or near) distant planet on the dark side of the moon, where you could at least set up a small home with warehouse to store containers of both ship equipment / commodities, somewhere where you could park your ship outside and go in and sit down to watch the Gall net news and chill for a while. A sort of Garage / warehouse for you goods and a sense of home.

Naturally it would always be open to being discovered though..

Call me crazy, but I HAVE a home in Elite: Dangerous.

It's on Emerald, in the Cemiess System. It's my family's estate, which I was able to rebuy once I had done my time as an Imperial Slave.

It's a lovely two story building sitting upon 10 acres of land, and includes a hobby farm so I can have fresh food when I'm visiting my home.

I will always have that estate on Emerald, regardless of whether or not the game develops to the point where I can land on Emerald one day, and regardless of whether I would be able to build it.

I really like this idea, though I cant see this happening anytime soon if at all.

I think ships are going to kind of be the players home, once we can walk around inside them. Parking a ship on a planet and then wandering off to hunt dinosaurs, the ship will be the home the player returns to.

I think having a station and being able to call it home and build up from a small station to a bigger and then bigger station would be a great addition. I dont think it will be any time soon but i hope it does happen. Giving a group the ability to see what they are doing matters and seeing thier system grow from the beginning would give players a sense of ownership and pride in a system more then into a faction that is already at the top.

Building on planets/in space is not an good idea in my opinion, look at sandbox games, you would have to limit the ways one can build and so on serious or end up with clutter.
BUT renting space (flat/cargospace/hangar) in one or several of the stations that would be cool, and it would not risk cluttering space.

I am all for renting out space in stations, it is what they are for.
IF Elite was an single player i say go for it, but given it is a share enviroment i doubt that building stations do to say in the open is an good idea
