Braben + Cobra + Docking video

Nice! The stations looks nicer with better video quality too.
I wonder what the final hyperspace will look like. Hope it won't be a cut scenes.
Was also expecting to see pseudo gravity through the rotation in the station to make docking a bit harder.

Nah...it will be a nice tube of starry light or something. They are just probably saving it for the trade and travel Alpha. Don't want to give us all the pretties at once.

Hyperspace definitely won't be cut scenes.

We have seen a potential candidate for hyperspace from the Capital video - the ships hyper-spaced in at the start I thought ?

I wish it's not a tunnel per say, but an actual zoom into the starfield. Add some pretty transparent effects and it should rock!

This looks excellent... but I'm gonna be that guy...

I hope the 3rd person view when you're docked is temporary for the Alpha. There's been so much talk about immersion and not being disembodied with 3rd party view, I would hate for that ethic to be thrown away by dragging you out of the cockpit and flying you around the ship when docked.

I LOVED the BBS view appearing in the HUD before going down to outfitting. I'd be completely happy with the outfitting 3rd person view being projected in the HUD instead of what happens in the video.

Awesome stuff. Thanks for the video! I had to watch it a few times (of course) and the 3rd person shots look to be drone cameras showing the hard points. Notice how they bob and drift. This may be a sneak peek at what the commanders will get to control later in the game.

We'll have to disagree there - first person wandering around or not, inside the hanger is the one place I would really like to be able to see an outside view of the ship in context. For me this actually enhances my immersion/involvement rather than breaking it. When I first saw it, it looked like the station comms had established a connection to the ship and was showing me a feed off the hanger surveillance cameras - excellent!

That is a good video of the docking procedure. Thanks.

Noonw in the copilot seat though - I wonder what tasks they would perform to make piloting the ship easier.

Thanks for the vid link btw. :)

I know I'm probably being really grumpy but is anyone else ed off we are seeing this stuff third hand?

Gawd so that's what a Coriolis station looks like with its skin on! Man it looks so.... patchy :D

Seems to be spinning too slowly compared to what I remember from the original Elite though...

Awesome video though. Can't wait for beta!

If even in station you don't want a 3rd person view, WHERE do you want it?

If the answer is "nowhere", then "Why would you bother to buy decals and paintjobs and other vanity items for the exterior of your ship when the game is released, when you can't even see it?"

I just want to understand what it's gonna be... If we're gonna have 3rd person view... why not have it in space?

If we're NOT going to have 3rd person view... why have it in the space station?

As Mobius said, it's a camera system in the space station. Excellent! Then lets show that camera view where we can see it sitting in our cockpit.

I too was slightly disapointed that we didn't get 3rd person in the game, because in Frontier I enjoyed the views that included my ship. However, when it was explained that this was a deliberate design choice to put us into the eyes of our character (immersion if you will) then I personally thought that was a worth while trade off.

Now if we're saying "Oh well disembodying 3rd person is okay when you're docked... just not when you're flying" then IMO we're now looking at having the worst of both worlds. No pretty 3rd person in space, and no consistant commanders perspective.

That space station looks awesome ....love the view of the little buildings directly in front of the ship .....so when is EVA again? 2016 ? :D

Well looking at your ship while docking could be first person preview before the expansion. You walk round your ship on the landing pad.

Why should it be an "all-or-nothing" situation? We could have a 3rd person view in some situations, and not in others.

With a sucky camera-interlacing effect on screen? No thanks. My screenies need to look awesome, not sucky.

A "camera view" in the cockpit won't cut it. How are you going to admire that new decal you spend real money on when it's a fuzzy blob on a tiny screen in the cockpit?

I disagree with your statement/opinion. I think it's fine. I would prefer "pretty 3rd person in space" too, but I'm not a hardcore, niche-freak. I can suspend my immersion at whim and deal with any "immersion breakers" with no issues, and if the game is fun, it's fun. If ED starts to become "niche" to cater for the hardcore realism/immersion crowd by REMOVING features instead of making them "toggle-able", it'll be less fun and not so easy to "get into" for Joe Public, and it would translate into less players and less income for FD.

Why? I'll let Sandro explain it best:

We've made no bones about our desire to "place" you in the cockpit with the restrictions inherent to this concept - we believe this creates the best experience for the game.

However, this does no preclude the use of cockpit interface elements being cameras, allowing you to look directly behind (or down etc.)

Importantly, the way that you access these views and what you can do whilst using them will have restrictions logical to the notion that you are a pilot looking at a screen (you may not have access to some controls and interface).

Based on that I'm happy to believe it's a temporary feature until something better (matching FD's design decisions thus far) come along to replace it.

Based on that, I am intepreting it (note, my opnion not fact or info gleaned from any source) as pertaining to the general operation of the spaceship in flight and combat.

Once you're docked in station, I believe the above is no longer absolutely binding and new "reasons" can be made by FD to tell us why you can see your own ship. Heck I can even make up a reason now - you've climbed out of your cockpit, and you're looking at your ship from the vendor's shop window :D. Could very well be a "placeholder" for the "walkabout" expansion even! Based on my made-up story, it's still holding true to FD's design specs - you're still looking out from your commander's eyes.

Of course you need to see your own ship for outfitting. They could very well have made it a tiny screen in the cockpit to show flashing hardpoints of where that piece of equipment you'd be mounting on, if you were to purchase it, instead of an external view, but they didn't.

Thus I am more inclined to think this is what FD intended and not a "temporary" thing for Alpha.

EDIT - Actually I rather think that Hellhawk's interpretation is more likely - the station is showing you various camera feeds off their cameras.
