News Horizons Beta progress

Crunch is never good. If it ain't ready, don't release it. As much as I'd love to get my hands on beta this Tuesday, I don't mind waiting another week if necessary. You guys are doing a great job.

Hi David, the video is very cool with the SRV driving around. I think the blurry textures will get resolved. My only complaint is the lack of NPC activity at starports which makes it seem lifeless.

I posted a suggestion here Add Civilian Skimmers to Simulate Life at Planetary Bases.

I love the huge scale of starports. However, it's odd that only players drive around in SRVs. Starports shouldn't feel barren, devoid of life.

I suggest adding Civilian Skimmers to simulate life and civilian activity at starports. It's not much work to add civilian skimmers, because it requires minor changes to the existing skimmers.

Wow, missed this yesterday. Looks great, got 3 days off work next week, so really hoping the beta lands on one of them even if it doesn't manage Tuesday :)

That looked like a lot of fun. 1 question though. Will it be possible to hire better SRVs from major spaceports? That way it might be possible for players in small ships to land on planets without having to sacrifice much cargo space for the SRV.

If you don't mind me asking, how will you make it possible for ships to fly in atmosphere? I came up with a possible solution several months ago (when planetary landings were announced) in that there was a module that (depending on which module was fitted) was able to modulate the shields so that they became the lifting body. As some ships are not exactly aerodynamic (well, the same as a badly thrown house brick) this might be one way to do it.

Thanks Mr. Braben, appreciate you and your team's hard work. I agree that you (all) must take a day off. No need to hurry to catch Tuesday or Wednesday or etc. We are so happy with 1.5 (ships) and i like to be with my Corvette. No need to hurry no need to rush :)

We are seeing also Star citizen's purchasers. They are so happy with no release date or even to be able to get released? date :D

The moral of the story is, please take a day off and rest.

Fantastic peek as always David, and massive respect to all the team for all their work (and extra weekend endeavours) on bringing this to us all.

Selfish question time - so are we more likely looking at a Wednesday drop for Horizons? (I'd need to amend my annual leave with my bosses from Wednesday to Thursday - and yes, I'm 43 years old with a very respectable job and an original 84'er!!!)

The team are still hard at work on the Horizons beta, including yesterday and today (Sunday). A huge thanks to the team for this, and for those that sent us pizza. Unfortunately the issues last week have compressed the timescales, but the game is looking ever better. This has put the Tuesday beta release at risk, and though Tuesday is still theoretically possible, in all likelihood it will be in the following few days before we can release it.

Cracking extra peek! :D

Torn between "Noooooooooooooooo!" and "Take as long as is necessary". Most definitely looking forward to the Beta landing soon™(ish).

I don't know...I have a feeling the devs very much would like to get it out the door as soon as possible. Taking "a day off" doesn't work IMO during some sort of "crunchtime"...your mind will wander over to work anyway. At least that is what happens to me. The only way to relax is to get it done first. ;)

Pity. But thanks to tell us about it in advance.
Unfortunately murphy especially in software development loves to hammer us with his laws at the most inconvenient times :D

Wait.

Waitwaitwait.

You have compressed the timescale? Sir, how did you do that, and could you please get in touch with JPL? They would like to talk to you about that. And a couple of folks at NASA too. Man, you guys aren't called "Frontier" for nothing! :D

Plus, you have an army of willing Beta testers eager to find and help squish any remaining bugs before "the holidays". At least we can help take some workload off Frontier's QA department!

Perfect vid at the perfect time! I can wait for few more days with this. Team please: take the necessary time to finish the work while preventing to burn you out in the process.

Next sneak peek: show us a space to planetary surface and landing on base transition, please ;)

Thanks for the update and sneaky peaky. I am an old 1984 Elite player. I think when I land a Cobra on a Planet for the first time I may get something in my eye. The original Elite inspired me to take up a successful rewarding career in IT. Thank you.
