Multiple Commanders

So do we know if this will be possible?

Can I create an explorer to go half way across the galaxy, and switch over to play my Bounty Hunter for a bit of mindless blasting?

If I get lost half way across the galaxy and my ship breaks down, can I just delete and start over again at Lave with a new Cobra Mk III and Cr100?

Or do I need to pony up £25 for a second copy (which won't get automatic expansion upgrades) in order to do this?
 
I doubt this'll be clarified before the KS ends. If there's enough noise though . . .

Personally I don't like the idea much, but I do appreciate that this is how the everyone-same-start people must have felt when I was arguing for ships for sale. Ultimately, if it encourages people to upgrade to £85 so they can run 7 characters, then it should be allowed. Easy to prevent them being used at the same time and it divides someone's time between 7 commanders, so none of those will be quite as good as they could be.
 
The problem with multiple characters is that you start off with a significant amount of capital, and so ou can offload this and create a new one for infinite money.

World of Warcraft characters sat off with nothing but cheap pants and a weapon worth a copper each, and there's no quick way to get something valuable and offload it.

Perhaps Elite: Dangerous characters should start out unable to sell their ship, and Cr100 isn't worth the time to duplicate by re-rolling. Bonus Kickstarter positions could be one-use.
 
We can have multiple characters in single player offline, Micheal have confirmed it on KS comment. :)
As PhilHibbs said, there is some problem with multiple character in online mode.
 
Nevermind multiple commanders, I want multiple ships!!!! Methinks a poll could be handy here...

Ooh! That is interesting. Possible for SP? Kewl! It makes sense for only one MP char.
 
There is a poll about multiple ships already.

Multiple characyer for the same account seems fine to me (although you have to remember that higher pledge backers will be able to start with 4000cr each character - selling your starter ship isnt the issue here).

I can see people wanting to have a different char for spying, avoiding factions etc. Without different classes there isnt a huge need otherwise.

Without a monthly fee to play I can see there being quite a few dual boxers as they will only need to pay for the game (and the updates).
 
Yes it can cause alot of problems if it isnt handled correctly.

Its a nightmare if you can trade/buy stuff ppl post in a spacestation. I can easily make 100's of chars each with 4000 creds and then buy 1 slave for the 4000 that my friend is selling, before deleting that char.

Rinse repeat and soon I will be rich ... you get the idea.
 
Easiest thing i think would be to limit the number of commanders a player can create... say one per month.

If you could only create one new profile each month, and the highest amount of starting credits is 4000 it'll remove the incentive to cheat as you could probably earn over 4000 in a month just by playing the game (and if you've played for a month, would you want to loose all that progress just to start again from scratch, 4000 credits better off?)
 
Multiple characters on one account would not be a problem as long as 1 characters ship and money is parked up and inaccessible when another is active, and you can't just swap ships and money between characters
 
Not a big fan of multiple characters on one account - there aren't any levels so there isnt any reason to have characters of different types. (This aint no fantasy MMO).

If you want a second character you shoujld have to buy a second account (its in FD's and ED's interests in the long run).

you could always give your money and trade items to a fellow clan member and swap ships... then get the money etc back

or have a second account and run that on a separate machine

i did both methods on Freelancer... my 2nd character on the "other" machine was a depot for weapons and was located near to our home system and outfitted new recruits

Agree. There are some £20 pledges left.
 
Not that they're particularly similar... but some online Bingo sites will credit your account with £35 when you join once you've put in £10 of your own.

I assume they have some way of flagging "Starter" money to prevent it from being cashed / traded until players have earned an amount over a certain threshold.

To prevent this, maybe FD could make the first 10,000 credits a character earns none-transferable?

I don't have so much of a problem with an established rich trader character giving money to a poor starter character so they can buy a decent ship. (You could see it as a rich merchant buying a ship for a family member.) nor do I have a problem with the idea of someone having 5-7 characters. It's fairly standard practice in MMOs to allow at least that amount, and I think most people would balk at being asked to buy a second copy of the game to have a second character... maybe give players 3 slots and allow extra character slots at a one time cost of £2-£3 per extra slot?

I do understand you'd want to prevent people from creating and deleting 30 characters and just pooling all that money though.

I have already a £20, but can't go any higher on kickstarter. So i will take a higher tier on paypal aswell and have 2 accounts then. But i would prefer to have to option for making multiple avatars on one account. But it should have a exploid protection. So something like the avatar have to be at least 1 week to 1 month old, to be able to transfer goods or money to other players.
 
I don't like the idea of being able to quickly log in and out of the game using different characters on the same account. If multiple characters are allowed on the multiplayer game, then there should be some time delay incurred before activating a new char etc. This would limit the effectiveness of players attempting to use a second character to gain unfair advantage over others.
