News Sneak Peek - Europa from orbit

Looks incredible and seamless
Looking forward to Monday, which is quite strange to say wishing my weekend away

Thanks for the sneak peek

Some people have asked whether they can land on Europa in Horizons. Well, they can. Here is a short unedited sneak peek of Europa from orbit, flying in supercruise then orbital cruise. Still a few rough edges, but getting better. Some settlements get highlighted as we pass over (a dotted circle means it is below the horizon):

Take her down! Let's see the deorbit and landing.

Where was the bug? Apart from some visible patches on the surface as the higher lod popped in I saw nothing indicating a problem.
The sneak peak was still in high orbit, not surface flight. Only reason why David did not show transition to surface in this video could be the fact it is not working properly at all times. Yet.

I heard that it is like dropping out of supercruise... But I'm not too worried about it. I'm used to that transition. But, like others, I would love it if the technology progressed to the point that even with the networking and instancing issues, this became more seamless.

I'm just a bit concerned it will be an immersion breaker. Seeing the seemless planet entry and exit in no man's sky looks very nice. It was even nice in frontier. An instance loading screen can run the risk of being unsightly

No Man Sky is not seamless. There is probably 5 seconds where they blur your vision before you are on the planet surface. I expect Elite to be simillar.

Fair enough. Not the conclusion I jumped to, but a valid concern.

I was impressed by the fact you can see some base geometry from orbit and not just a marker. Even if from that height it's only a few pixels.

This is correct. Unless they change something, the transition to the surface in No Man's Sky is pretty much a seamless-looking cut scene where you lose control of the ship. You fly straight at the planet and it takes over and "rights" you (turns your ship parallel to the surface) and slows you down. Unfortunately not as seamless as it looks.

Yeah you're right, they do like a"you're going through the atmosphere/clouds " effect. But it doesn't look out of place. If ED is the same then I'll be happy.

It's just when I drop out of super cruise to a station, it takes like 10 seconds of a looped animation then the station jumps into view. I live with it and its not a big deal, but if it's like that on planet transition I fear it will urk me

"Monday, Monday, can't trust that day", or can we? (With apologies to the Mamas and Papas!) :)

As an aside:

.... but *they* said that we should leave Europa alone....

That was in 2010. In the 31st century human kind has wiped out the Europans and pilfered all the resources. Old habits, it seems, die hard. ;) :)

Hello David,

Nice video thanks a lot.

I have "spotted" some still texture blocky texture poping. Are you still confidend to fix that for monday ?

Europa looks fine.

Wow, we'll be able to land on Europa! And the Planet is looking really good! Great News! Must watch this Vid on my TV again, several times, after work...Thank you Sir Braben!

a new video before 8:00 pm is good, so the neighbors cant complain... ty FDevs, for keeping me save from a lawsuit :D

oh... ooooh, after watching the altimeter, it seems to be even trickier to get onto ground like it is not to overshoot in supercruise. EXCELLENT! the harder, the better!

let me guess: travelling at RIGHT speed, in a RIGHT angle, with RIGHT accelration/decelration, add strong "gravity". mmmmmmh.

0:31 and forwards a couple of frames.

See where FUNG'S CLAIM is and keep on following that spot on the surface as the marker disappears. You'll see a black dot...that's the base.

Hmmmm. Do you think it will be like approaching a station where we can press the J key at a certain number of KM away and zoom in to a much shorter distance, or will we have to control our approach more than that, or an option between the two?
