News Sneak Peek - Europa from orbit

Which implies that you're still in supercruise in orbital cruise but closer and slower thanks to the "Planetary Approach Suite". This begs the question: "Can you be interdicted from Orbital Cruise?" And if so, do you come out near the planet's surface? Because that would be AWESOME.

Doing the instant "snapping to a new position" we see when dropping to stations and other POIs in space is "okish" while in space with little points of reference around you. Still not optimal and I can think of several ways of improving that by doing a smooth transition path from the location you pressed the button to the location you end up close to the POI, but that's another discussion... ;)

On planets though that "snapping into place" would be VERY apparent so no, I think we'll gonna have to approach it in a much more controlled fashion.

I'm expecting the same clunky transition pause...

Something Wonderful Is Going To Happen

.... but *they* said that we should leave Europa alone.... ;)

Peace? Yea,....right you are! :D

Wonderful video David and congratulations to you and the rest of the dev team.

Is it a new feature that the HUD body indicators (the "parentheses" around planets/stations etc) are now dotted lines if the body is obscured? Nice feature if so, saves you ploughing into a planet/star while trying to reach something behind it.

The Horizon is interesting (no pun).

Watching the video at first I thought the planet was perfectly round, you see no bumps on the horizon at all, as though it's just a flat texture over a sphere.

But as you get closer and David flies over the surface I *think* you can just make out small hills/mountains (it's hard to know scale) jutting out where the surface contrasts with the black space, I am not sure.

Thx David - this is ... amazing! The flicker when the HUS comes up! That station / location Fung's Claim. Can't wait. Now I'm sure I'll need/want a new Pc :D

So at circa 0.56 the HUD shows a red rectangle, what's that precious?

I assume it's an indication your angle is too steep. The new HUD element seems to have 3 levels

- From +5 to -5 degrees, the indicator is blue/green (I'm partially colourblind!) indicating more or less level flight.
- From -5 down to -60 degrees, the indicator is the normal amber.
- From -60 degrees downwards it's red, your descent is too steep.

From the looks of it, the point at which you enter & leave orbital cruise is at an altitude of about 550Km (OC on the altitude indicator), and I'd guesstimate the point where you drop into normal flight (DRP on the indicator) is about 50Km, giving you 500Km to 'play with' in orbital cruise, 50Km in normal flight.

Clearly it's a reference to the star named Red Rectangle (which is actually blue-white BTW) and therefore must be a secret portal that instantly teleports you all the way out there if you fly into it :p

And the wait get's worse!!!! But in all honesty that you for all the updates and sneak peeks. Keep it up!!!

Thanks David, really really thanks, now we need a sneak video per 5 mins... look what you have got... we all are addicted and pressing F5 on the forum waiting for the next video...

Europa looks awesome, but need to say that you MUST play with a HOTAS and a head tracker, I´m afraid a PC controller is not fair for Elite: Dangerous :D

Thanks again, and if beta is going live on monday, please, don´t abandon us this weekend, rec some videos and program youtube to publish them onces a day while you are drinking some beer for the great job everyone are getting in the studio ;)

Looks really sweet. Props to all the guys at Frontier for getting this looking so good. An incredible amount of work (and a good dollop of skill!) that most of us take take for granted.
