What strikes me is how many people complain about controls, and don't even bother to actually set the controls...IN SPACE SIM. It's madness. People these days...used to 'Press F to win'. It's sad. Really really sad.

This is why I hated flying in Planetside 2. After many years developers didn't bother to allow players to redesignate roll for keys and yaw for mouse. Also, not even half decent joy support. But you can tweak controls in any way you want in this game. The controls are a major, major hurdle for new players. Most of these are going to be mouse+keyboard users and the learning curve is extremely steep (although not long).
I'm a seasoned gamer and have played pretty much all the recent space games (although none in the year up to Elite Dangerous), but my first thoughts when trying to use keyboard and mouse to fly were... shock. Disbelief. "This cannot be true", "Gotta be a bug".
The main issue is that mouse x-axis assigned to roll is NOT what players expect. It's a direct result of the slow-yaw, of course, and it took only a few seconds of playing with yaw-mapped-to-mouse-x-axis to get me back to x-axis roll. 30 minutes later it was second nature. But those first few minutes were really tough.
Flight sim players with keyboard + mouse setups would find this natural, I assume, but it isn't what I've used in any of the previous space games I've played.
The solution would seem to be to have a decent tutorial that really eases new players, unaccustomed to x-axis roll, into the game.

sad reality of today gaming, that's why call of duty sells for billionsThey're not fans, they don't really care. When the price is discounted enough most of the buyers do it on impulse, "meh, worth a big sandwich, let's see", so they won't do much research beyond the Steam rating, the trailer and the metacritic score. You get the playerbase you set your price for.

Great to see Elite is up there on sales on Steam, But...
Reading the Steam forums has been the highlight of my day. Amazes me that people don't research, YouTube, and or use the search feature on the forums about games that actually take a few more brain cells then most games to get an understanding of how things work. I used to post on Elite's Steam forums often, but have got sick and tired of the usual Steam trolling replies. But if you want to kill some time, head on over and read some, past my lunch time quickly.
To the few Steam posters that have replied with thanks, welcome to Elite Cmdr's <O
Hmmm... I'd like to buy Horizons for a friend as a gift but how can I have the 10£ discount ? It doesn't apply during the checkout ( and i'm logged to my account ).
Oh yeah, Steam forums last night were on fire. Many of the posts could be summed up as:
"I bought this game without doing any research, I don't like it, and now I'm angry"

I haven't checked out the store recently (beyond having a look at some of the new items), but I'm pretty sure that only applies when adding Horizons to your account as an upgrade, assuming you've already purchased Elite: Dangerous.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed because the Xbox version seems sparsely populated.
