ED among best sellers in Steam

What strikes me is how many people complain about controls, and don't even bother to actually set the controls...IN SPACE SIM. It's madness. People these days...used to 'Press F to win'. It's sad. Really really sad.

The controls are a major, major hurdle for new players. Most of these are going to be mouse+keyboard users and the learning curve is extremely steep (although not long).

I'm a seasoned gamer and have played pretty much all the recent space games (although none in the year up to Elite Dangerous), but my first thoughts when trying to use keyboard and mouse to fly were... shock. Disbelief. "This cannot be true", "Gotta be a bug".

The main issue is that mouse x-axis assigned to roll is NOT what players expect. It's a direct result of the slow-yaw, of course, and it took only a few seconds of playing with yaw-mapped-to-mouse-x-axis to get me back to x-axis roll. 30 minutes later it was second nature. But those first few minutes were really tough.

Flight sim players with keyboard + mouse setups would find this natural, I assume, but it isn't what I've used in any of the previous space games I've played.

The solution would seem to be to have a decent tutorial that really eases new players, unaccustomed to x-axis roll, into the game.

This is why I hated flying in Planetside 2. After many years developers didn't bother to allow players to redesignate roll for keys and yaw for mouse. Also, not even half decent joy support. But you can tweak controls in any way you want in this game.
There was one guy on steam stating he's a seasoned sim player. No way he was unable to set controls. Other guy didn't even bother doing anything, he just didn't like it from the start and quit the game. I don't want to be negative, but it's just silly.

They're not fans, they don't really care. When the price is discounted enough most of the buyers do it on impulse, "meh, worth a big sandwich, let's see", so they won't do much research beyond the Steam rating, the trailer and the metacritic score. You get the playerbase you set your price for.

sad reality of today gaming, that's why call of duty sells for billions

I recently moved country and didn't bring a joystick with me, so have been flying a bit with keyboard and mouse. Most things were ok, but landing in stations... pheew... like an idiot I thought I might be able to do it without using vertical thrusters (I was too lazy to find the key) and no way could I land that thing.

I still can't figure out how to get the 'invert axis' working for pitch. Ship always points down when the mouse goes down.

You know what would be a cheap and cheerful little moneyspinner? A £5 CQC-only build of Elite. Pay another £5 to unlock the rest of the game. People would learn the main game systems in CQC (with it's default-mapped XB1 controllers) and not angry when they got to real space.

Great to see Elite is up there on sales on Steam, But...

Reading the Steam forums has been the highlight of my day. Amazes me that people don't research, YouTube, and or use the search feature on the forums about games that actually take a few more brain cells then most games to get an understanding of how things work. I used to post on Elite's Steam forums often, but have got sick and tired of the usual Steam trolling replies. But if you want to kill some time, head on over and read some, past my lunch time quickly.

To the few Steam posters that have replied with thanks, welcome to Elite Cmdr's <O

Yeah, that's the modern gaming world. Yesterday I talked with someone who planning to try out DCS World, since the base game is free. I told him that he should be prepared to spend some time reading manuals if he wants to do anything else than just fly around. His answer: "Oh, I'm sure I can pick it up in 2 mins by watching couple of Youtube videos."

Hmmm... I'd like to buy Horizons for a friend as a gift but how can I have the 10£ discount ? It doesn't apply during the checkout ( and i'm logged to my account ).

Ran into the same problem. What I did was to buy 2x 20€ gift cards, send them to my friend and he can use them with his frontier account to purchase horizons. That way your friend should get the discount. Btw, you have to buy the gift cards separately in two purchases, which isn't a problem though.

I haven't checked out the store recently (beyond having a look at some of the new items), but I'm pretty sure that only applies when adding Horizons to your account as an upgrade, assuming you've already purchased Elite: Dangerous.

Which, right now is the same price as buying the "I don't have any form of ED, give me Horizons + ED for $30 off and access in a few months" version. Thats really what this Black Friday sale is. Assuming you're going to buy Horizons later, you're paying that same price for the version I just mentioned, but you actually get access to ED now.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed because the Xbox version seems sparsely populated.

Do we know how many players there are on the Xbox per day?

442.147 PC copies sold via steam, the you can add the sale from the FD store? 400K maybe more? Total +800K, how many was sold until now for the Xbox?

I'll be honest, the latest discount deal was what got me to finally buy E:D. n_n;

I had played Freelancer before briefly at a pal's back at school (13 years ago, give take, sounds about right - the pal might have got it on release considering the age of the game), and I remember really enjoying that; but that experience alone wasn't enough to make me feel convinced enough to back the original E:D Kickstarter... so my husband backed the Kickstarter because he'd played, and had owned, the original Elite game so was super keen. After seeing him play E:D I felt a lot more convinced and so kept it in mind while waiting for a price drop, and eventually wishlist'd it on Steam.

So pleased to now have my own copy of E:D now. Thank you Frontier for the latest discount and for providing a Steam Key with my purchase. :) I look forward to seeing how things go with Horizons in future!

Oh yeah, Steam forums last night were on fire. Many of the posts could be summed up as:

"I bought this game without doing any research, I don't like it, and now I'm angry"

Yeah, i think that's a bit of a common occurrence with these sales.

People buy several games they at some point "have heard of" and only are vaguely informed about (if at all), because they're cheap, and then they either find out they don't like 'em or don't even ever play them.

I know of folks who have dozens of games in their backlog, even for years, and never got around to try them out.

Buyers compulsion at it's best/worst....depending on from which angle you look at it.

I've not come across any XBox stats on the web for Elite, but sales for the PC apparently reached 800,000 back in Aug or Sept..it's probably quite a bit more by now

Too all those saying that steam was a negative with regards to hosting this game on it. I said it was a good idea and will generate many many more sales. Those that think steam is bad are still living in the dark ages of digital downloads and gaming. Steam is a very powerful medium and is used by many hardcore veteran gamers all over. There is no better platform to launch a game on.

Fresh victims *drool*......

I erm, mean...erm.....New players yay! Cant wait to meet them.... ;).
