SRV: Extremely long landing gear for small ships? Just... weird.

Yeah, that does look pretty ridiculous. The ops suggestion makes so much more sense, versus doing it quick and dirty and stretching out a couple polygons. Come on FD...

I don't know guys... It actually looks about right to me, assuming there is some shock absorption in the legs too, which would make sense, landing on questionable terrain. The pic in the first post is mostly just at a bad POV on the closest leg.

Do space jockeys think the planet they land on are vacuummed and dusted everytime someone takes off from there? The ship needs long legs to prevent fouling of critical ship functions like the landing thrusters. Thrusters do get cranky when filled with FOD.

From examining both pictures, I think that the standard landing gear looks like it will come out further to raise the ship up temporarily, and that is just a special mode for it, not its normal position for standard landing pad use.

However, what concerns me more is, did Frontier really miss this memo:

To me it gives the impression that the ground is ally cold water, and the ship is a dog that doesn't want to get its junk wet.

good, now that you all can never unread that, we can all smirk a little next time we see it.

I think the front ramp is what demonstrates that this is a temporary placeholder. Especially once we get FPS mode. But there are lots of semi-permanent placeholders in the game already. And I hope this just becomes one of the shorter lived ones.

They'll need to be "hydrologic" and lower again once the SRV clears the ship.

And then there is this as well. It isn't likely that we'll need the ramp when moving between driving the SRV and piloting the ship, so if the landing gear is extended for clearance purposes, I don't have a problem with it.

Adding in the additional animations that you mention would also be pretty cool.

I think we can all safely assume that the art department have washed their hands clean from this decision though! :D

This is more the responsibility of the "making things work practically" people. :D

Well, those people should not make decisions LMAO! :D

Ground clearance for uneven terrain and deployables. I dont see an issue.

This might be far-sighted decision. We don't know, on what planets those ships can land in the future. On the swampy planets or planets with large quicksand areas etc.
Though those legs could be a little thinner, imho.

Landing gear doesn't bother me much... But what bothers me is shadows; the ship appears to be floating which is an indicator to the AO doesn't do its job.

It's likely only the very small ships.

Eagles, Haulers, Sidewinders etc.

Anything that sits very low to the ground on a pad right now (and hopefully will stay that low there).

You seen the belly of a T9, its like a 5 foot clearance from the floor!

I like it, it makes sense. If the ship hovered....or the legs shortened just for aesthetics...it would be so hokey.

To be fair those back legs aren't even touching the ground..

The thing that bothers me most is all the copy and paste going on in the game at the minute.

Space port interiors are copy and paste of the space stations, I can't believe they didn't do something new here. Its bad enough that the surface structures are so plain and inactive, the interiors needed to be new, it needed to feel like you were somewhere different. All the menus are the same, everything is the same once your docked!

No surface ground activity other than a few drones, no movement other than AI ships landing and taking off.

It all feels so bland.

It had such epic possibilities but it feels half baked just like ED did at launch.

FD FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP RUSHING THINGS!

There's already way too much copy and paste with space stations and outposts..... Now we have copy and paste star ports too!

This really bothers me. Cant stand looking at my landed ship when it looks that silly. Wonder how on earth can David approve this stupid looking landing gear. Its just beyond me
