Infinity

As i'm new here i'll not go on about Elite 4 and the where's and why's of why it's not sitting on my hard drive with me playing it. Like many here i grew up on Elite and it started me off on this whole space shooting, trading type of game which to this day i continue playing.

I'm an avid Freelancer player, coder, modder (written loads), have my own website & forum and run my own multiplayer server. The complexities of EVE just simply baffle me, X3 is on the right lines but of course no MP, and that really is it for games that offer an Elite style experience.

There are however, others waiting in the wings, and i'd like to bring your attention to this little gem called Infinity

http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinity/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=33

I've already tried the multiplayer side and it is quite an experience. One day this project will be finished and i for one will be spending time there and lots of it. I suggest a trawl through the galleries or watch some of the videos. Any new versions of Elite would surely have to at least equal the graphic beauty of this game.

So hurry up David and please give us what we want, your sheep are without direction and personally i liked my old Elite pen :)

Yeah we just knew about it... i tried the combat demo me too.. it's impressive for some reasons.. for some others i fear on some kind of big bluff..
hope to be wrong. -_-

I dunno I think it is worth keeping Infinity in mind - there is some seriously clever stuff going on with these guys. I can only imagine what they could be getting up to with decent funding and direction/management. The engine itself is looking very impressive.

Take a look at the website and read the recent events section, especially the 2008 summary. Makes for an interesting read.

yeah too much impressive.. especially the ideas about the city ..what kind of framerate/graphic card should i have to have a good gameplaying ?
think about it...

i really hope that someday they will release this thing.. but i work on editing and i know how much work is it.. -_-!

I see what you're saying but when you look at what games like Crysis, Farcry 2, Call of Duty and Battlefield manage to churn out including when you're flying vehicles over battlefields/scenery filled with flora and fauna, I think you may be underestimating what is possible these days.

I don't think you should be under any illusions over the hardware requirements for these things - gaurenteed we'll be looking at the higher end machines (i.e. Dual core, 2 GB of memory and a DX10 capable video card with 512MB of ram or more) tp really get the pretty stuff but rendering several faces on the fly is not a big ask these days.

In regards to the Infinity engine rendering a city can't be much more of an ask than rendering a forest?

Well... you are optimistic.. no doubts about it..

but i'm thinking also to the demo combat simulation.. that is not the game.. that is less than the 0.5% of what the game should be.
SO we don't have any clues about what the REAL final game should be.

that is bad.. -_-

Hi Gibbon

A bit of fan,of freelancer myself and there are some great mods for it,always liked the atmosphere.Just sitting by the station/jumpgate and listening to the coms traffic, for me no other game has that sort of immersion quality as freelancer has.

Do you know of any way to rip it out of freelancer and get it to work in FFE3d?.:D

Never been been a fan of online MP games but if they EVER get Infinity finished,I think I'll give it a go.

The thing i liked about both Elite and Freelancer, was the ease at which you could get into the game. Obviously better weapons and ships meant going places and taking on tasks that were difficult, but the learning curve was there. It's probabaly why i got into the whole Freelancer modding scene as it was an easy game to alter and create mods for.

The npc sound files you refer to do make it a bit unique. Obviously repetetive after a while but even to this day a random statement still catches my ear that i haven't heard before which just makes me laugh.

Not sure how to go about adding them to FFE3, as we're talking a lot of soundclips. You'd have to create hundreds and hundreds of new ones to get the variety and with regards to Freelancer, that's still a bit of a holy grail even today.

Yes i enjoy Freelancer and i am looking for a single player mod, as i am not really into the mp thing since i quit Eve. I am playing the Discovery mod at he mod, but while good, it is catered towards MP. Can anyone reccommend a good SP mod i can get into?

Shame about the sound file, but it was just a passing thought.

If Frontier ever get around to making another game I hope they give some thought to that aspect of the game.

You might want to have a look at the massive add on mod,it adds lot of new ship from starwars/babylon5 ect and some new system to explore.I think you also need the no story mod to use it.

What's starting to concern me as much as when E4 may come out is what if someone brings out a game which really does everything we want from E4 and more. This could result in frontier stopping development on E4. The problem is... which I suspect we all share, if someone else developed a really excellent game is it still wouldn't be Elite.

With games like freespace, x3 etc. They are getting closer. Breathing down frontiers neck as it were. I don't usually comment on the "when's E4" posts but I really think time could be getting on a bit.

Rant over :)

Pig Flight Simulator... I presume you are referencing the Combat Flight Simulator? And in related news Aces - the developer of Microsoft Flight Simulator - has been closed by Microsoft. I am just going to have to learn to fly a real triple-seven then.

Back to the topic anyway. Frontier has every intention of producing the game that we want and that is a lot of fun to play and explore. From this point of view we don't care all that much about what our competition is up to - though certainly we do keep an eye on them. The delays of Elite IV has never really been down to what other people have done but rather as to when we feel we can make the game justice.

As for any other person (or entity) that is working on a space-game we wish them the best of luck (and look forward to playing their game). Competition after all benefits the consumer and it is for you guys (and gals) that we are here.

Actually it was just a joke... as in "pigs might fly". Implying that it's highly unlikely that another company could produce an Elite clone that does "everything everyone wants and more".

I can help you out with that. You can try my mod lol as it also caters for singleplayer

I've tidied up the base code a lot and added lots of new things, a new version 1.04 is due out soon.

As to other games and the development of E4, it's good that Frontier keep an eye on the opposition so to speak, would be foolish if they didn't. Just because Elite was the first and best at the time, doesn't mean in the 21st century it still will be.

I really miss elements of Elite in current games, sun surfing for fuel for instance, always loved that, dynamic economies which are finally appearing in space games, even freelancer has that now, (least on my server it does due to a serverside hook), newtonian physics obviously and multiplayer i think will be the most important area. I appreciate a lot of people prefer singleplayer and they of course should be catered for, but the interaction of players via the multiplayer route is paramount. I've had the most fun playing freelancer for instance playing multiplayer.

Just look at the statistics for the amount of EVE players and i rest my case. Jumpgate Evolutions coming out soon is yet another Freelancer meets Elite clone that will be huge but is also pay to play, i personally don't do pay to play as i feel once you've bought the game why pay for more, but that's just my opinion. The future is multiplayer, the trick is to blend it all together and getting Elite 4 right will be a mammoth task, like getting a great band to write a second great album, not easy lol, i should know as i'm a musician by trade.

I just hope it all comes together, i really really do as it was Elite that started me off on all this and it will probably be the last game i ever play as well, Just hope it comes out before my last breath lol

Thanks for the suggestions Gibben and Space gamer i will try them out.

As for E4 it really is becoming the holy grail isnt it. X games, Eve Online havent come close for me, hopefully there will be an annoucement soon!

Personally i wouldnt want to see Elite IV as MP, at least not in the mould of Eve. As you say it would be a mammoth task, and that is why i think it should be SP, at least at first.

With all the work that is going on with Infinity it would be nice to see them get some funding because is definitely trying to take everything we liked from a host of different space sims and put them in one big package. The I-Novae engine is very impressive and with the community submitting ships and ideas this project will just grow.

Do I want to see an Elite4 of course and as of right now Infinity is the closest to the ideals of Elite. Frontier Development is probably sitting back and waiting to see if it is even worth the effort to start the project since you will see a little saturation shortly with of course EVE, JGE, BP, STO, Infinity and some other projects that are coming. Will there even be some market share to compensate for the years of development that will be needed.

I am just very pleased to see this genre come back to life again.

I've followed Infinity for a few years now and what they're doing is technically impressive, but my concerns are more related to their back-end than the front end. The biggest problem with MMO's, in my view, is in their middle layers and there has been precious little information from the guys making infinity about exactly how that will work.

It's one thing to produce what is effectively a technical demo and quite another to produce a playable game.

I know all that will come in time they are predicting like a 2011-12 release date so I'm sure more info will be released in a little while. I know they are mainly trying to get the I-Novae engine complete. Mainly what we see in the form of screenshots are coming from that engine. So I guess once the engine is complete they can now start building the game. I cannot wait to see more progress on this game and hope it does really get finished. The potential for this game is huge and it seems development direction is heavily community orientated. Unfortunately we will have to just sit here and wait.
