The Star Citizen Thread v 4

*Mod hat off

The thing with "crazy moves" is that eventhough they may be perceived as more realistic and "saleable" they offer a much more shallow gameplay due to lack of inherent tradeoffs in the maneuvering game. The rest of the dogfight system (guns balance, detection, shields etc) is therefore at a much higher pressure in order to compensate in gameplay for that lack of depth in maneuvering.

The most recent updates in the SC flight model have actually approached SC to ED´s model a little by slights nerfs in rotations in general, in yaw in particular and reducing the power of mav thrusters compared to main forcing pilots to anticipate inertia and change attitude to correct moves, much more now than ever. I like the move and it does not need to go all the way to ED´s model to strike a good balance. We ll see!

ding ding ding somebody gets it. This here is what everyone here is complaining about. Star Citizen used to play a heck of a lot closer to Decent (FPS) style gameplay than Wing Commander/Freespace/Privateer. There is nothing wrong with that gameplay style, unless you pitched something else. Actually, well, there is something wrong with that gameplay style for Star Citizen, before 2.0 and even now to a larger extent, you can still basically rotate super fast without too many negatives. The entire game boils down on who has better aim and who stays on target the longest. This basically invalidates any maneuvering or to a larger extent attempts to escape, because its so easy to keep on target. That is also another reason why Interactive Mode on the mouse is so OP, because of pinpoint accuracy and coupling with flight. As you aim, your ship auto follows that aim without you doing anything. Controls and flight model are Star Citizens biggest issues and have been for the past 16 months. Those are the core of the game, if they can't get those down, its going to be a very rough ride.

But yes, with 2.0 it has moved closer to ED, they still have a long ways to go before they get there, there still needs to be a whole lot more weight behind the ships. The medium of flight model should definitely be closer to ED's to tackle that "feel" and "gameplay". It's not that Star Citizen can't do its own unique thing, but it boils down to gameplay, if you want challenging and deep combat, you have to move closer to a game that is like ED, where the main aspect is Flight and not aim.

At the same point, CIG trying to do a hardware solution (Trackballs on JOysticks) to solve the gimbal problem just goes to prove how clueless or incompetent who ever is behind controller balance. Trying to solve something with hardware instead of an easy software fix, its just mind boggling.

In SC/AC you don't have to stop or slow down for turning and you can turn your guns and/or cockpit at any time in any direction without having to change your actual movement vector.

Pretty much, basically boils down to an aim/who has most guns on target for the longest time to win.

I know how SC works, I'm just saying that I've seen some people say SC combat is not turreting because both ships are moving.

Fun fact: Wingman is doing a Descent remake now after leaving CIG.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with Descent gameplay style as long as you

  • put the combat into close quarters instead of open space
  • limit the movement in all directions to FPS-typical speeds
  • remove gimbaling guns

Then you have a 6DOF FPS which is also fun to play. It just has absolutely nothing to do with WW2 dogfighting. And it doesn't work in open space without terrain.

Today I decided to fire up Star Citizen - got my ptu invite last week but this was the first chance to play it. 8 hour download time later, finally it was ready to launch! Hit launch game - immediate 'Connection Error - login failed'. That's weird, i thought to myself, and tried again. Same thing. A quick search of the RSI forum found a thread from june 2014 - apparently deleting the User folder solves it. No worries, i deleted the folder and sure enough loaded into the new menu screen. I click on universe, and Port Olisar - Disconnection code 7 kicked immediately. Try again. Same thing. Well, might as well try load into the hangar, its been a while. A 5 minute load later and i was in. 5 minutes later, I was bored. Try to load into Crusader again. Kicked again. Try again. This time the server is full - different error message. Go to try again, and the option has disapeared, the only thing I can select is ArcCorp. Oh well, might as well see if that has changed. Click into ArcCorp. All servers full, try later. Closed the 'game'. My first impression of 2.0? Not good. Not good.

That description holds accurate for so many PTU builds it's not even funny (but is partly why I haven't bothered with the latest one).

I've been watching PTU Videos (just realized i have access myself), but those ships just don't behave like i'd expect. Connie taking off is just like moving a camera, not smooth, no inertia, no acceleration, instant full speed. It looks like moving an object in 3ds max, not like a game. Is that a bug?

It's horrible. My Connie feels like a paper plane.

There's no sense of mass or inertia. No sense of actually flying a big ship. It just feels like you're an FPS camera with a (badly designed and crowded) HUD attached to your face.

Awful, just plain awful...

I usually only bother with major updates - more because the gameplay isn't worth the download than anything else. I did have high hopes for this update though; it's a major leap forward, an actual framework of a game to play, so for it to not even work... I'm not even mad, just disappointed.

OH! So that's why the Connie is so jerky on the last update! People are been saying it's a bug because it feels heavier.

Because the ship doesn't turn as fast as there mouse cursor moves any more.

From ATV as well, again "new core elements" hinting again for what's to be shown on Dec 16th. Also seems if Nyx is a milestone for after shopping, this is 2.1, so the Planetary Landings are not the priority currently, being that the AI.

- Work on ship AI in 2.0, and FPS AI for future releases.
- Working on the Smuggling career, weapon design, and pre-fab missions for the PU.
- Lots of work on stabilization of 2.0, and on certain new ‘core elements’ that we will see shortly.
- Next milestone after shopping is most likely Nyx
- Nyx has progressed very far for awhile
- Nyx will be accessed via elevator at first until they have other systems in place IE planetary landings
- Tony is excited for the shopping routing feature. It allows a person to buy an item and have it delivered to the place of their choice, e.g. Hanger, Million Mile High Club for a small fee
- The next big milestone post Nyx will be the AI. It will be a dedicated milestone, however they will release bits and pieces to where it will be gradual and then all of a sudden they all mesh together into the final AI module

Cargo on 2.0 is sandbox fun, go steal a Noddle Vending Machine from Covalex: :D

Is there any video footage?

Can't find any, not only the Connie has Jerk. The last update is also a Jerk, one server stability fix that totally backfired. The good side it will force them to stop thinking on Live for a bit and get this right first.
Will quote you once those guys who test the flight model get to how the connie feels after the K patch balance.

Edit: Found some combat, fighting the connie, it's now challenging to take its shields off, but you can see a bit on the player on the Connie struggling on movement so he can reply to the maneuverability of the fighter.
This ships may be expensive and strong, but they're multi-crew and without that crew... you're weak.

Just tried version 2.0.0l and I just did my first 30 min play without any crashes or anything. I had a few vehicle bugs, getting stuck while entering my cutlass, hud freezing up and showing me the outside of my ship and the likes but I could easily get out of those situations if I had to (exit the ship and remount etc).

Quite fun warping to the fps station for the first time. I get there, jump out of my ship and EVA to the platform, and while I'm doing that someone warps in and kills my ship so I am left stuck at the security outpost lol. I got one of those rifles from the station and camped a part of the station waiting for the guy to come looking for me and kill me, but he never came, so I ended up asking for a pickup.

Now that the crashes are getting less and less, I am still waiting for that performance patch that doubles my FPS :)

Incredibly mature. Excuse me but what does your reply have to do with any of the facts listed by MaxLexandre.

You're only getting personal because you don't want to deal with the facts raised by the post, which is satirical not particularly immature. Given that the satire takes the form of simply highlighting broken promises without any editing it's actually quite damning.

I agree the link is presented in an immature and almost cruel manner. Perhaps jcrg99 believes that these list of proposed developments are continually used in an attempt to secure credibility for the troubled project, a marketing tool intended to manipulate consumers into making choices based on poor information.

I know I am fed up with the spin, sparkle and hype used by RSI in their continued attempt to assure us that the project is aok, though of course they are not the only ones to employ such practices and best left to the sales team.

Now, I'm not suggesting that Max is attempting to sway opinion with regards to the SC project by presenting such lists. To do so would be morally questionable at best, considering the state we currently find the project and its development history.

Naturally, I would hope that all information shared, with regards to SC (and other marketed products) is done so in an attempt to provide possible consumers with reliable information from which they can form their own informed choices on how to spend their own money, as is their right.

Sadly, SC has suffered and continues to suffer a troubling development. Going on about it doesn't help and nor does attempting to assure folks that everything is aok and such lists of proposed developments, along with the various other media items, demonstrate clearly that RSI, like so many other companies, is an entity prepared to do what it takes to manipulate consumers rather than educate, under the guise of 'good business' and the defence of 'well we're not the only ones doing it'.

Those taking the time to read the link provided by jcrg99, be they current of potential customers, will clearly understand that any official information presented from SCI should be disregarded until proven. If its not in the game, if we cannot play and appreciate it, then its just hot air.
