frustrated disabled alpha tester

Good luck with this, i'm sure FD will help to sort out the issues with it. once the game is out i'm there will be loads of interest in this feature from both disabled and able bodied.

i for one look forward to shouting 'Shields!' in the style of captain Sulu if i see a ship turn towards me for the attack ;)

Hi Michael

Okay so I have got the three panels as their own command so when I say target panel,y system panel or radar panel it moves to the respective panel.

When in one of these panels for example the systems panel you Have got fiven menus to scroll through along the top of the panel. these are:Stats, Modules, Fire groups, cargo and functions. It is these that I cannot access because I'm unable to get voice attack to scroll across the top of the Panel.

I have bound the up, down, left and right Panel menu optionsTo ASWD. The W and D keys work perfectly but the other two don't work at All even when I Assign them to totally different keys.

I've just tried this - I get inconsistent results. Tried with a command that repeats an E keypress 4 times when I'm focused on that right panel.

Sometimes it goes all the way across others it only jumps one or two panels.

hi guys

Okay I'm getting really annoyed now because I cannot scroll across the top of my panels with voice attack. I can do everything else by voice apart from this. If I don't get this sorted I won't be able to play any more!

I have tried to 3 different key options but nothing seems to be working for this action.

as the FDhave made the panels such an integral part of the game if I cannot use them properly that means no more elite dangerous.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Keith

Hello Excalibur, in many games if there is a graphic change associated with a command there will be a slight pause until the interface is able to accept the next instruction. This is the case with the side panel displays.

When you issue the command to open the side panel you need to insert a pause in VoiceAttack so that the graphic of moving your point of view to the side panel has time to happen. I've found that 0.3 seconds is usually enough to allow for this.

Then when you are scrolling across the top of the panels you also need to insert a slight pause to allow the focus to change to the next tabbed list. I've found that 0.1 seconds is enough for this. The same is true of stepping through the options inside a list.

If the pauses you insert are not long enough the scrolling will end up short of the desired destination. It doesn't matter how long the pauses are, but making them too long just wastes time.

Extending the length of the key press does not work, as it will simply cause stuttering or rapid cycling through the options.

Have a look at this video for an example of how the menus can be navigated: Deploying undercarriage by VoiceAttack

The script I used for this is as follows. I am assuming that you are using the E key to step to the right across the menu lists in the side panel, and the S key to step down through the list. The Q keystrokes take you back to the default top left starting menu position:

===============================
Press 3 key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.3 seconds
Press E key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press E key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press E key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press E key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press S key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press S key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press S key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press S key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press SPACE key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press Q key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press Q key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press Q key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press Q key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Pause 0.1 seconds
Press 3 key and hold for 0.1 seconds and release
Say, 'Undercarriage deployed'
===============================

I hope that helps.
Cheers

Hi Michael
I didn't realise it was you who Wrote to me. I appreciate FD are really busy getting alpha sorted, I would be more than happy to wait until FD have got the time to look into This and now that you are aware of my predicament I will back off from the Posts about this issue I'm having.

Is there an email address I can send you a photograph of my ED computer set up as I think it will make a great publicity shot to show how FD and the ED community are at helping somebody with physical disabilities are.

I wouldn't mind writing something to go on to your website as well to encourage more Disabled people into the game.

I'm now playing ED on a 32 inch TV which is absolutely awesome.

Just wanted to thank everybody who has contributed to this thread and I really appreciate it. If this was the Star citizen forum I wouldn't have got half as much help as you guys have been.

Thanks

Keith

Mark Boss handles the community side of things, so I'll get him to get in touch with you as this sounds like a great idea.

Check out HellHawk's suggestion as it sounds like that could be a solution for you, if it doesn't work then post in this thread.

Hi hell hawk

At the moment I'm still trying to get the menus to scroll across with a single command With a single Keypress. Once I can see where things are in the menus I will be able to do things like youHave done enough.

I can't even get it to move across to theNext menu options nextLet alone do something as Complicated as your undercarriage command.

Keith

no point backing off, you've set Brooksy a problem - let the guy solve it so its one less issue for him to worry about - that's what Alpha is for ;)

i've not had a problem with menu movements,

I use the default press 3 for right screen and then E to move right through the tabs and s for down..

I'll double check it again, though with TRack IR it can disable commands like that... and you need to redefine them.. but i think you've tried that too?

Keith - a quick thought - check your keybindings in the options menu. You should have a default of Q & E to move to the next and previous tabbed list respectively, and W & S to move vertically once on a list. You may need to bind A & D to control the horizontal movement in a list item. This was the original default but may have changed/been lost with build updates.

Hi Excalibur-Keith. This is a great idea! :)

The fact that such an important issue is being worked on in Alpha, speaks volumes to the virtue of Frontier, and indeed the Kickstarter / crowd funding model.

Had this game been made by Publishers who only care about the bottom line, I doubt they would even have considered for a nanosecond people with disabilities such as yours.

Besides, there are benefits for all the rest of us by getting all your problems sorted out. I'm imagining using my voice to control things in the ship when things get too busy, so that's a great thing.

I love the idea of using your setup for marketing purposes.

Best of luck to you Keith. Maybe we'll see each other on the Frontier, on some vast desolate planet, or maybe at a pub in a space station. :)

Are there any alternative voice recognition engines to the one in Windows? It doesn't work for me since my language isn't supported and it seems impossible to change language in Windows 7 Home Premium.

You can't use english voice recognition on a foreign language windows 7? That's crappy.

I bought windows 8 upgrade so I can use the english language pack and nearly installed it. Then I saw screenshots.

I know of Dragon but it's quite expensive.

Yes it's expensive, especially if you need to the pro version to create custom macros. Or maybe want to get real clever and use some python to get in the middle of its recognition process loop (like this guy did). But as I said they are the best at what they do and if you really need it (and the support they would provide) that is the way to go. They may have a free trial or evaluation version you could use if you contact them.

With regard to changing the language in Windows. You have to reinstall your operating system in your base language, windows localisation issues eh... (It really bugs me when people suggest I reinstall windows, so lets keep going)

If you are interested in something free you could consider training your own recognition model, there is an open source (and therefore free and still under active academic development; so there is support of a sort) toolkit here; but I am kinda joking cruelly here because it's actually hard to do and takes time... that said, a competent programmer could create a small vocabulary model (trained to them selves personally) with a modest amount of work, following the examples and tutorials and such.

There would be many issues with interfacing and integrating, but I'll just assume you are a prolific genius, like Doc Brown in "Back to the future" (I love that guy)

Or.. if you managed to get this far..

Have you tried http://www.voiceattack.com/

It's mentioned a lot around these message boards... you did see that didn't you?
