Horizons Framerates?

It's hammered my framerate.

General space flight was about 110, dropped to 50.
In station 65 ish, dropped to 28, all settings the same

Not that I can notice. It's still playable on these settings but a big drop, I have a very high end system though, I know other updates have affected higher end systems early on.

Not sure about space, doesn't seem any different to me. Maybe they improved the lighting a bit.

Planets are very ram hungry though, I can see why they switched to 64bit. Looks like it's using around 6gb while idling at a surface outpost :p

Planet terrain crushes VRAM right now. Game looked great for Beta 4, didn't look any better in 5 or 6 but the new mapping is killing a lot of high end pc's. We will probably need to wait for new drivers.

Yea it's due to the fact there is an entire planets worth of high res terrain, with an unlimited draw distance. It would probably run a lot worse if it wasn't for computer shaders etc, so not too bad considering :)

Looking around I think the performance hit on higher detail settings is due to a few small visual improvements which just add up. It's not happened for no reason. For one, LOD switching on planets is much further away (a good thing!).

Theres still some horrendus FPS drops around big ports, something else is causing this though. It seems to start when all the skimmers appear on radar. :/

Yeah, figured that. I've got 32 gigs of Corsair ram coming in today (and my second gtx 970 woot!). Yet another upgrade inspired by this game.

My framerates have lowered by 60/70%. To the point that it's not fun to play anymore. No changes in graphical settings. I even tried lowering them.

At this moment, when almost approaching a planets surface, the whole screen fills up with lowres artifacts and other trippy stuff.

No clue what's wrong.

Not sure if you guys are BETA players but this all seemed to happen to me after BETA 6....was getting great 50-60 FPS in space and 30+ at planet surfaces all through BETA and then all of a sudden yesterday after BETA 6 dropped I went down to 30 FPS in space and 7-12 (unplayable) at planet surface and low altitudes.....I have raised a bug....https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=211424 and also commented on this in the BETA discussion forums (I am also playing on a pretty low end system for EDH) but I guess if we add any additional helpful comments to the bug report on the BETA linked there FD will look into it and we'll hopefully get some more optimisation!!

I don't want to come out as ungrateful by the way to FD I think Horizons is amazing a an incredible achievement...just to see that much of a change from BETA 5 to 6 seems like something was introduced!

And if anyone finds a fix with playing with settings then please let us all know so we can try it!

Have you played with the terrain work slider at all, that did wonders for me. I ended up having to drop one of the settings from Ultra to medium and the rest to high, I'm not on a super high end system though, but that took the frames from a headache in the low 20's fps back to a buttery smooth (for my eyes) 60fps.

Yeah, it was on 0. So I set it to the max. Which didn't do much for the framerate, it stayed about the same 20-30. The terrain still isn't loading in properly, even though I've tried setting it to high just to see what happens.

Tried other graphical setting as well. Turning stuff off/on, trying differing combinations etc.

On my machine, it's terrain quality on "ultra" that destroys framerate. I used to get 60 fps with everything on ultra and 1.5 supersampling. Turning off supersampling and lowering terrain quality to "high" gets me an acceptable 60 in space and 30-40 on planets. None of the other settings have such a massive impact.

SS will always destroy framerate as you are doubling the work the GPU needs to do.

Any chance this is an issue with the game going to 64bit? StarCraft 2 went to 64bit in October or so and it killed the framerate for many people. Thankfully an option existed to go back to 32bit, and all was well.

What people do not realise is that the game is now using alot more Vram. So when if your card has 2Gb of Vram, once you go over this limit you game will stutter and the fps will drop. You need to run MSI AB with rivatuner(included) and enabled the onscreen display. Then you can customize what you want to see regarding gpu performance ie: vram, % used of the core, cpu used, temperature etc etc.
Also remember as your vram reaches your maximum limit your core clock will take a hit on performance also, this will also lower your fps.

Solution: Lower your game settings to low and work your way up slowly, or buy some new hardware.

Update:

It was the SLI issue. I used nVidia Inspector to add in the 64bit exe and now it's right back to sooper dooper high FPS!

Very happy.

Had some issues on planets first time I went and it dropped to about 40FPS, and stayed there, notched the shadows down to high and it is OK again.

Shadows seem to be the killer in ED like other games

There is a known bug by AMD that kills FPS in supercruise, I get about 60 FPS everywhere but in SC with a lot of players it'll drop down to 19ish, it's pretty bogus.
