Horizons Liking mining now...

So pleased that the annoying micro management of the refinery has now gone. Just spent a chilled couple of hours with annie in a pristine metallic and all is good. Not chuffed to get a transaction error just when i had found a nice juicy painite asteroid, but I'm still mellow!

op, are u sayin we no longer need to tell the refiner manually each time what material to refine etc now? (been a long time since i was mining last, before mining bots etc even. but that part alone with the refiner clicking was why i havent more, rest of the mining is quite ok thou -yeah i know i dont give a dam about creds per hour is that obvious? lol)

I spent a week in beta testing the cutter for mining,
I can say that yes the refinery and limpets work as they should.
Very chilled

I used to enjoy having to give the Refinery a kick now and then to keep it working. It sort of seemed like real life :p

Yes i see what you are saying! It kind of all happens now remotely in the background and with little user input! So you lose the hands on feel of it and kicking the bin. Also the interface screens are a little better once you get used to them. Tab from cargo to bin and back seems quite intuitive. As someone else has posted it still seems a little pointless to fire off more than one prospector but i dont think i need to as its all pretty efficient. Is it my impression that the collectors are not being damaged by the mining laser now?

What exactly has changed?

I tried some mining with my T6 just after collector drones were added, but the micromanagement of the hopper was way to annoying.

There's no hopper micromanagement unless it fills up completely now. No needing to clear it once one type of ore is filled completely and waiting for you to move it so more of it can slot in. It's breezy.

Yes, I think they fixed that in 1.4.
To be honest, I only ever tried mining during 1.4, just to make use of my "rank free" Clipper I got from ALD's coronation, and I killed quite a few of those limpets...

I liked the way the hopper used to jam and you had to unblock it manually it felt real somehow!!!.
I partially agree to this. It did give the "real job" feel, but it got a bit overwhelming to keep up with all the things if you were using 4+ collector limpets at once.. I had to focus the refinery almost non-stop to make the most of the short limpet life span.

Should have been a purchased module rather than a nerf

Nerf?

That you are in the year 3301, have a starship with an advanced onboard ore processing system, automated collection drones, able to jump between entire star systems... but still have to micromanage your hoppers?

I don't understand if you mean that it's a nerf.

If people like the real job feel then just buy a metal trashcan and kick it every 15 seconds o_O

To a degree you still have to manage it unless you want all the low value metals/minerals. There's also a filter but it's quite limited so it's still a bit hands on.

When I kit out a Python or Conda for mining I use 6 collectors and I was basically in the cargo menu all the time dealing with Unallocated stuff. This is way better.

Need to have a play with the filter at some point to see what it can do properly.

Never-the-less, it could or should had been a purchased upgrade just like a lot of other technological purchases that's already in the game.
I can use you analogy on all or most purchased upgrades that is already a part of the game play in ED.
It simply would be a case of affordability and capacity.
Not taking away the function just say that if you want it why not have to purchase it as an upgrade?

Upgrading means more slots in the hopper.

The base functionality of the hopper itself remains the same.

The previous functionality of the hopper and the micro-mangement was so rudimentary it's almost the same as having a handcrank to start your car instead of having an actual starter motor.

Sure the handcrank feels more like a real job, but it's a pain in the ass way to do it and entirely unnecessary.

Nomatter how basic, advanced, small or big a car is today, they all come with basic functionality such as a starter instead of a handcrank.
