Native 0.7.0.0 and 0.8.0.0 Oculus Runtime Functionality?

When SteamVR is active the SteamVR connection status window opens to let you know both headset and tracker are active.
Steam is completely closed whilst opening the Elite Horizons Launcher, Steam stays closed, no SteamVR connection window is open whilst Elite Horizons is running in VR.
I'm not saying your theory is untrue, but how can you undeniably prove that SteamVR is driving Elite Horizons through the dedicated Launcher instead of via Steam?

As written above. Uninstall SteamVR from the tools. Then try to start Elite. ;)

I currently have two copies of Horizons installed, one via Steam on separate HD, the other via Launcher on Windows HD.

SteamVR is also installed on the separate drive.

I've unmounted the separate drive where Steam, Horizons(steam) and SteamVR are installed.

Sure enough the Non-Steam version of Elite Horizons loads up in VR as normal without SteamVR.

Ok - so debates aside: I installed the SteamVR and purchased EDH. It runs in VR with the 0800 runtimes, but it's pure rubbish. The judder is abysmal, and even creating a custom resolution profile did nothing.

The game is not optimized for Direct To Rift. It's really a poor execution on that of Frontier. Such is life. Maybe one day they will find time for it. They have my 60 bucks, though.

Mazhurg is correct. You have to have SteamVR installed for it to go. I uninstalled it and EDH didn't want to run.

I'm a bit confused here.

I was using my DK2 during the Horizons beta (although I can't remember if I actually flew down to a planet in DK2 or not, but I definitely was using it to look at the interiors of the new ships). It seemed to work fine for me and as far as I know I don't have StearmVR installed - at least I have never gone out of my way to install it.

I'm running in extended mode though so maybe that's where I'm confused.

If you're running in Extended then you do not have 0700+ Oculus Runtimes installed and are using an older version. This is about getting Horizons to run with 0700+ runtimes.

ive tried many things to get EDH working in vr with 8.0 runtime including: trying different sensor/camera positions, running EDH both in and out of steam (both separate launchers and directories), making sure my main display/ing-game refresh rate is set to 75hz, and even tried starting steamvr, starting the launcher, closing steamvr, then launching EDH. every time its the same thing. feels like it runs at 10fps and always defaults on every launch to some low resolution @ 99hz.

before EDH came out i ran ED fine with the 0.6.0.1 runtime in extended mode. i have no clue what the issue could be. EDH, steamvr, the oculus runtime. i do know there seems to be a growing group of dk2 users who are all in the same boat regarding EDH barely working with the DK2. hopefully this will be addressed soon since ive heard direct mode performance in EDH (when working properly) is improved over the old extended mode. of course theres the planetary/settlement judder issue alot of people have been reporting, but thats a different problem all together.

rig info: 780ti, windows 7 64bit, 12gb ram, intel i7 920 @ 3.8ghz.

So, while you do not need to load StreamVR (already stated multiple times) you do need to have it installed for Elite to access the HDM.

Yes this was my problem, didn't have SteamVR installed. Now it works. :)

Anyone know how to change the head position in Elite, when I look straight up my head is inside the chair.

Boxx, i was getting horrible judder too until, after creating the custom resolution, i went and rechecked that graphics menu in Elite. For some reason it sometimes resets your FPS back to 0. I have no idea why 0, but setting it again to 75hz makes all my judder go away.

My experience is similar as posted above by Machine1981. I can make it work with 0.8 SDK, SteamVR must be installed. Setting in-game resolution, monitor refresh rate to 75Hz, SteamVR running or not, have no effect at all on the outcome: ED runs on HDM but at a lower resolution and an abysmal frame-rate. I strongly suspect the different results we are seeing are due to OS differences - I have Windows 7 64bit.

Yeah, it's definitely win10 preferred. And the 64bit Runtime of Horizons. If got to say, this whole issue has me confused about Frontier in general, I mean why is their engine working perfectly with SteamVR anyway. If indeed it is actually utilizing it's drivers.

It'd be due to their partnership to be a launch title for Vive. I'm sure Valve have been working with them, probably more willingly than Oculus now they have arcade-space-shooter Eve Valkyrie as their launch space game.

@AbsolutDisgrace: I set my resolution to 1280x768 for 75hz, but it's still a judder fest. Either my resolution is incorrect or it doesn't work on my machine :/

Works great for me with 0.8 and SteamVR... until a get into planetary flight, where the framerate drops to jump cuts. ;)

...but it's a start, I guess.

I'm still happily using the 0.5 runtime (starting it manually via shortcut) to play Horizons, and ED is the only thing I use the Rift for. Can anyone tell me if there are actual benefits to using 0.8 and SteamVR? My sense has been that people are excited about it as a compatibility or convenience issue, rather than improving performance in Elite, but is that accurate?

To give context to the question, I'm currently getting smooth framerates (probably 75, but haven't measured) with mostly high graphics settings, VR quality slider max, 1.5x in-game SS, 2x MSAA in-game, on Win10 with a slightly overclocked AMD 290x.

Yeah spameroo we know that dude. Im not in a position to 'have to' keep changing runtime just to run a game, where it doesn't increase any performance, for me anyway.

The 0.8SDK/SteamVR compatibility is by far the best I've ever experienced with my current setup. Just waiting on AMD for the Supercruise lag fix on the next beta driver set. Then as far as I'm concerned everything will be perfect.

Bring on 2016 and CV1, can't wait!

Sorry if I'm being dense, but I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly. You are saying it's the best compatibility but no real difference performance-wise?

Basically it took me so long to get my current setup working that I don't want to spend the time to make SteamVR/0.8 work unless there's a performance or quality benefit. I was genuinely asking the question of if it's worth it right now.

If all you ever use the rift for is playing Elite then fill your boots with a highly customized setup that works for you. However, for many of us, we use the rift for more than just Elite. I use it with Virtual desktop, play Fallout 4 through vorpx and many more uses. All those do require runtime 8.
